Chapter 274: Chapter 281: Swimming Together
Lucy Campbell didn’t immediately understand, so she asked James Brown, "Just because a woman is beautiful, does she have to be harassed?"
James Brown repeated the reasoning he had figured out earlier to Lucy Campbell, who nodded and said, "I believe you. In the Capital of SSUP, I have seen people harassing these girls, but it never happened to me."
"Yeah, it’s only you who harasses others, haha, but how could you harass anyone? If you really harassed someone, they must be extremely flattered."
Lucy Campbell suddenly burst into laughter. Such vulgar words from James Brown were rarely heard by her. Looking at James Brown, she thought to herself that she was indeed harassing him right now, but she kept it to herself and didn’t say it out loud.
The weather today is wonderful, with clear skies, blue sea, and a gentle breeze, perfect for swimming.
James Brown noticed that Lucy Campbell’s gaze suddenly became intense. Following her gaze, he realized that Lucy Campbell was looking at his upper body. James Brown quickly stood with his arms outstretched, striking a bodybuilder’s pose, and joked, "Haven’t seen a handsome man before?"
Lucy Campbell giggled again, but her eyes were indescribably gentle, saying, "Could I take a look at your wound?"
"What’s there to see in a wound? It’s embarrassing to mention it; it was my first gunshot wound in years."
Lucy Campbell pouted slightly and said, "I just want to see it."
"Alright, if you want to look, then look." James Brown turned around.
Lucy Campbell then saw the scar on James Brown’s shoulder, which was only the size of a nail, but she clearly understood that if James Brown hadn’t taken that bullet for her, she wouldn’t have existed in this world anymore.
Her hand slowly reached out, wanting to touch the scar, but James Brown turned back and smiled, "Alright, don’t always stare at a man, it makes me self-conscious."
Lucy Campbell retracted her hand, smiled charmingly at James Brown, and with a spread of her arms and a lean, she plunged into the water, swimming away. James Brown followed closely; when with others, he always considered himself just an average person, but around Lucy Campbell, he inevitably assumed the role of Hawk Squad member number two, ensuring Lucy Campbell’s safety.
The two of them swam in the sea for an entire hour — Lucy Campbell was really tired by then, so they headed towards the beach together.
Though there were people on the beach, the two of them didn’t head towards the crowded areas but chose a slightly secluded spot instead. James Brown absolutely believed that if those men saw Lucy Campbell, there would definitely be trouble.
They rented a sun umbrella, set it up, and then sat underneath it resting.
A woman in her sixties, carrying a box, came to James Brown and Lucy Campbell. With a heavy local accent, she asked, "Young man, young lady, would you like some seafood? All freshly caught by me as the tide came in this morning, absolutely fresh."
Lucy Campbell immediately became interested and asked, "What’s available?"
"There you go, we have conches, Emperor’s Crown, little crabs, all fresh," the woman hurriedly said, putting down her box and removing the lid for them to see inside.
James Brown kept an eye on this woman; with Lucy Campbell around, he couldn’t afford to overlook anything, but this old woman clearly had no issues, just a person selling seafood by the shore.
Looking at these items, Lucy Campbell looked at James Brown questioningly and asked, "Can these be eaten?"
James Brown laughed, "They can be eaten, let’s get some for you to try."
The old woman was delighted to hear it and quickly took out a bag; James Brown had already taken out some money when renting the umbrella and now handed it to the old woman.
Looking at these items, Lucy Campbell said, "These are all seafood? How come I’ve never eaten them before?"
"These are the cheapest seafood; you always ate abalone and sea cucumbers, how could you eat these kinds? Even if you go to a seafood restaurant, you would definitely eat the expensive stuff and never this."
Lucy Campbell picked up a small Emperor’s Crown, examined it, and asked, "How do you eat this?"
James Brown took a toothpick left by the old woman and said, "Just use this to pick out the flesh inside."
Lucy Campbell tried it, easily picking out the meat, showing a surprised expression on her face, and said with a smile, "Indeed, I managed to pick it out."
James Brown smiled and said, "Just remove the small black part at the back, and then you can eat it."
Lucy Campbell nodded repeatedly, carefully removing the small black part at the back, and then brought it to her mouth, opening her lips slightly, gently biting with her teeth, and slightly puckering her lips before eating the meat.
It must be said, the beauty of Lucy Campbell is not only in her pretty face and fiery figure, but most importantly, her demeanor; whatever she does always carries a sense of elegance, like eating, an act that for others would be considered pleasing to the eye.
"It’s really good, truly fresh," Lucy Campbell smacked her lips, nodding continuously, and then picked up another one to eat.
The two of them sat under the beach umbrella, on the sand, enjoying seafood, truly an indescribable delight.
Lucy Campbell’s appetite is usually small, but today she had exercised a lot and these seafood delights were not something she could enjoy often, so she ate quite heartily. In front of James Brown, she didn’t need to consider being reserved or what was right or wrong, which made her feel very relaxed.
After finishing their meal, they laid down on the beach, eyes closed, basking in the warmth of the sand.
"Shall we go for another swim?" Lucy Campbell sat up and asked James Brown with a smile.
"If you go, I’ll join you."
"Don’t be so reluctant. Is it that hard to accompany me for a swim?"
"Not at all. It’s just that there are more people now and I’ve also spotted a particularly annoying guy. I doubt we can enjoy another swim."
Following James Brown’s gaze, Lucy Campbell saw several men not far away, who were pointing and gesturing towards them. She smiled and asked James Brown, "Is that your enemy?"
James Brown nodded and replied, "That guy is a Deputy County Chief. Last time he was harassing Alice Brown, and I just happened to be there, so I gave him a good beating."
"Harassing?" Lucy Campbell was surprised, "Jessica Johnson, the host, seemed eager to climb up the ranks. Last time I noticed her trying to ingratiate herself with James Brown, and since that man is a Deputy County Chief, he must be quite influential. Jessica Johnson should have been trying to please him, right?"
James Brown chuckled, "Initially, I also thought Jessica Johnson was just using her looks to climb up the ranks, but after interacting with her a few times, I realized she has her principles. That day, Christopher Taylor also has quite a background in the province. Normally, Jessica Johnson had no reason to refuse, but she did refuse, and quite decisively at that."
"Oh? Maybe she saw that you were there, and with a bigger backer like you, naturally, she wouldn’t cling to the lesser option."
"Heh, for one thing, I’m not some big backer; secondly, I just happened to be there that day, she didn’t even know I was there. So I could tell she genuinely didn’t want to, and that’s why I helped her and even beat up Christopher Taylor."
Lucy Campbell pursed her lips in a smile and said, "Then you were playing the hero saving the beauty. Did the beauty offer herself in gratitude?"
James Brown rolled his eyes at Lucy Campbell and said, "I noticed you really love playing matchmaker. Why do you keep arranging people for me unnecessarily?"
Lucy Campbell pouted innocently and said, "Good deeds are often misunderstood."
"I really can’t afford your kind of good deeds."
While they were talking, Christopher Taylor had already approached with two men.
"Kid, we meet again." Christopher Taylor, wearing a pair of swim trunks, his eyes full of hatred, said, "Growing up, you’re the first one to have ever humiliated me this badly. Since that day, I’ve deeply hated James Brown. After returning home, I thoroughly investigated his background, only to find out he has no significant backing and no wealthy relatives; he’s just an ex-soldier whose parents are long deceased. That such a person could scare me back then is a huge insult."
He had been seeking revenge on James Brown these days, but hadn’t encountered him until today, here at the beach.
James Brown looked at Christopher Taylor with a smile and said, "Life really is full of unexpected encounters; I bump into you everywhere, you pest."
Christopher Taylor was nearly exploding with rage. James Brown was unbearably arrogant, but even with two men, they couldn’t physically confront James since he was too good in a fight, and starting a fight here as a county chief would cause unwanted trouble.
"Young man, don’t get too cocky. I’ll soon make you understand what happens to those who offend me," Christopher Taylor said with a chilling look in his eyes.
James Brown responded in his usual mild tone, with a calm smile, "Yes, you as a major county chief and me as just a commoner, offending you is indeed troublesome."
"You know that’s good, but knowing now is too late. I won’t let you go," Christopher Taylor said with a dark smile.
Lucy Campbell had been paying no attention to them. The chance to have a moment alone with James Brown was rare and she didn’t want anyone to disturb them. Christopher Taylor’s endless quibbling was already annoying her, and now his arrogance had crossed a line, showing no dignity as a county chief. She turned around, facing Christopher Taylor and said lightly, "Mr. County Chief, you sure talk big."
"Hmph, provoking me..." Christopher Taylor was about to continue boasting, but when he saw Lucy Campbell’s face, he was stunned, and so were the two men following him who were staring fixedly at Lucy Campbell.
Their gawking made Lucy Campbell even more uncomfortable, as she was only dressed in a swimsuit in front of James Brown, and now these three were looking at her unscrupulously. She scoffed, stood up and said, "Let’s go."
James Brown immediately followed Lucy Campbell towards the changing room, and to their surprise, Christopher Taylor and his men did not stop them. They were still stunned by Lucy Campbell’s beauty, their minds virtually offline, completely forgetting to block James Brown and Lucy Campbell.
After a while, Christopher Taylor finally snapped back to reality, swung his hand vigorously, and muttered to himself, "I must have this woman, absolutely!"
Christopher Taylor didn’t realize that from the moment he harbored this thought, he had set himself on a path of no return.
