Chapter 70: Lost(II)

Rory saw the truck passing alongside a long stretch of rocky terrain. She has seen the map of the forest a lot of times. This stretch of rocky hills is in the middle of the forest. She didn’t know how he got here this fast.

He tried to get on the rocks for some reason. The truck tilted to the side, scaring her. She hung on to the seat and glared at him.

"Ready to get out yet?" Liam asked with a lopsided smile. He even tapped on the steering wheel menacingly.

"No! Of course, not, idiot!" She pointed out not minding his vanishing smirk. "Look! Do you even know where we are at? Am I a fool to be left alone in these woods? I heard there are cougars out here... And wolves, and coyotes...bears... At least black bears are... I don’t even have bear repellent, you idiot! F#ck, I’m not even wearing shoes! Ready to get out? Right! If I am f#cking Wonder Woman!"

The truck came to a halt and Rory turned to look at him.

"So it was your brilliant idea to drive into nowhere to scare me off? To make me leave? Did you think that would work on me?" She clenched his jaws. His face wasn’t as menacing as before and he looked apologetic and pitiful.

"F#cking fool!" She raised her hand to slap him and he closed his eyes and gritted his teeth to brace for her hit.

Seeing his pitiful face, Rory clenched her hand into fists. She didn’t want to hit him.

"That damned anger! I don’t know why you can’t control it knowing that it turns you into an f#cking halfwit..." She grunted. "Like a mad elephant, he’ll trample on everything when he is mad and then turn to a pitiful puppy when he has calmed down. What a f#cking tart..." She mumbled.

"I’m...sorry..." Liam cleared his throat. His voice was meek, his shoulders were hunched, and he was pouting.

Rory’s heart melted seeing his face. He was so adorable. "Why did you stop?" She shouted trying to change her mind. She didn’t want to be pitying him. "Get back to the trail!" She waved her hand and looked away.

"It’s..."

"What?" She snarled as he didn’t turn on the engine.

"The gas..."

Liam got down and walked to the back of the truck. Lifting the tarp, he looked for something. Rory was confused and it was then she noticed the blinking red light.

No f#cking way! The fuel tank is empty? What the...

She got down from the truck and Liam shook his head in exasperation.

"There is no reserve fuel and..." He gulped.

"You didn’t check the fuel before getting us this far inside this God-forsaken woods?" She asked controlling her desire to take a bite out of his ignorant head.

She took deep breaths. Can she even blame him? He was asking her to get down each turn he took and she was the one stubbornly sitting inside the car pretending to be some sort of hero.

F#ck this!

She took her phone and as she expected, there was no signal. She went back to the front and checked the dashboard of the car once again.

"What are you doing?" Liam asked, his face devoid of any care or frustration. Only Rory was so annoyed with herself for following him to nowhere when he looks perfectly fine.

"Checking if your dad installed an SAT phone or something..." She looked around without looking at him.

"Pfft!"

She heard him snort and she looked up to see him standing with his hands on his hips. Although she could only see his back, she smiled imagining the pout on his face.

She wanted to ask him about the fight he had with his father but she held herself back. She knew she won’t get any answers.

"Well, there’s nothing here..." Rory let out a sigh. "Guess we’ll have to walk out of the forest..."

She was not feeling that terrified. The sun was still up and all they have to do is walk in the general West direction and they will be out of the forest within a couple of hours.

Theoretically.

She rummaged the truck and found a bottle of water, a map of the forest, and a half-eaten Cheetos packet.

She grabbed them all and walked in the direction they came from. "You’re not coming?" She asked Liam who was still standing there without moving.

"You leave," he said without looking at her. "I’ll come back later."

Rory pressed her lips. He is an adult who is capable of making his choices as he sees fit. She does not have to be responsible for him. He’s not even her husband anymore.

"Okay," she turned to leave. She even took a couple of steps away from him. But it was hard to take even a single step.

Not because of the terrain and not because of the lack of proper footwear, but because her heart didn’t allow her to.

Sighing in disbelief of her own stupidity, she turned to have a look at him.

But he was not there.

"Fizzy..." She called for him. But she didn’t hear him reply.

"Fizzy!" She called this time more loudly.

She looked around. The tall trees that screened the sunlight and the cool breeze that was pleasant to her didn’t do much to release her stress.

She didn’t like to be left alone in this place. And more importantly, she didn’t want to leave without him.

"Fizzy, I’m scared. Don’t leave me... Please... Fizzy..."

She ran past the truck in a random direction looking for him. She knew he should be around here. She took her eyes off him just for under a minute. There is no way he would have gone far.

She had a feeling that he can hear her and is hiding. He wants to push her away. But she was not willing to leave him alone.

She might be clingy, but she’d rather make sure that he is safe than regret not looking for him in case something happened to him.

"Fizzy!" She sniffed knowing he won’t hide for long if he knows that she is scared.

"Ah! Help! There is a beetle!" She screamed. "I’m going to die! It’s circling me... It’s going to eat me! It looks like the ones from "The Mummy". Fizzy! Ah... Am I cursed? Why does it follow me? Ahhh, help!" She stomped her feet on the ground.

"Oh, shut up, Cherry! You raised beetles as pets when we were young."

Rory’s lips curved to a smile and she turned to the direction his voice was coming from. Liam appeared from behind a tree. He looked unimpressed and she controlled her smile.

"Fizzy," she ran to him. "I am scared." She hooked her arms with his and pulled him toward the truck.

They need to get out of the woods before the sun sets.

But she couldn’t take a step forward.

Liam gripped her arm hard. "What part of ’leave me alone’ do you not understand?"

His voice held no care. He looked at her as if he hated her.
