Chapter 71: Lost(III)
, Rory brought up a smile to her face. "Let’s talk about all that later... After we get out of the woods, alright, Fizzy?"
She knew that getting out of the woods when it is light out is absolutely necessary. Once it gets dark, the chances of survival would drop dramatically.
"Are you stupid?" Liam pushed her. "Just leave. I don’t need your pity. Go home to your family. They all will be waiting for you."
"What do you..." Rory didn’t understand what he means. He grew up here. He knows what kind of place is this forest. He knows they cannot stay here.
But he insists that she leaves and that means...
Her heart skilled a beat. She didn’t want to leave him alone.
"Both of our families will be waiting for us, Fizzy," she said trying to hold his hand.
"No, they don’t..." He stared right at her. His cheeks trembled and his eyes were wide open. She saw the white of his eyes turning red as tears accumulated in them. He cocked his head. "No one likes me...No one wants me back... You go..." He waved his hand.
"Everyone will be waiting for you."
Rory’s eyes watered seeing him hurt and hearing his bitter voice clenched her heart.
"No, Fizzy," she tried to hold his hand even after she failed again. Liam slapped her hand. She didn’t mind the sting and still tried to hold his hand.
"What are you even saying? Everyone loves you too. Everyone’s waiting for~"
"What do you know, huh?" He shouted and his roar echoed around. The birds that were resting on the trees all flew away as if dynamite exploded near them.
"What the f#ck do you know about me? About my life? Just f#ck off! I feel like a thousand maggots are crawling over me looking at your face... Disappear from my life! Why do you keep on showing your face..."
*Hic*
Rory didn’t know where it came from but tears flowed continuously from her eyes and she started to sob.
"You’re right...." She said amidst sobs. "I know nothing about you. You never told me anything...I was willing to listen... And yet..." She couldn’t speak as her chest heaved up and down.
"Tch," he clicked his tongue. "Don’t start," he mumbled and tried to hold her shoulder.
But she shrugged him off. He was not going to comfort her. He was going to say more hurtful words to her and she didn’t want to hear them.
"No one wants you? " she took a step back. "You cannot see anyone who cares for you, Fizzy? Aren’t you seeing me? I’m here in this God-awful place for yo..."
She wiped the snot dripping from her nose with her sleeves.
"My baby...she’s alone there... And I’m here trying to...I left Ellie, my darling, my peace, for... You..." She pointed at him. She still spoke amidst her sobs. Her lips trembled and her tears clouded her vision.
"I know... You’re consistent. You don’t want me... I know that. In here..." She poked her temple with her index finger. "But here..." She tapped her chest with her palm. "I can’t... I can’t..."
Her knees went weak and she struggled to stand straight.
She couldn’t speak further and staggered to the truck waving her hand. "It’s enough... It’s enough..." She mumbled and staggered her way up through that elevated terrain.
She didn’t hear him following her and she didn’t want to care. But her tears didn’t stop. She saw his pain when he said that he has no one. And she couldn’t bear it that he entirely ignored her existence.
All those years of togetherness, all those caring acts, all those words she spoke, the confession...
Did any of that mean anything to him?
---
Liam didn’t watch her leave and turned to walk deep inside the forest. He didn’t know what he said to her but he was fine with her leaving.
He wanted to be alone.
She talked as if she knows that everyone wants him back. But no one does. His father...
Heh! Father... Can I even call him that?
The dried leaves and small twigs on the forest floor snapped under his boots crushing them into smaller particles. But his heart was crushed more.
Who can see my heart?
’Aren’t you seeing me?’
Her tearful face and her shaking voice replayed in his mind. He stopped and fisted his hands. His body tried to turn and walk in her direction.
It is true. She was always there for him. And he never appreciated her for it.
His heart wanted for him to go but he willed himself to stay.
There were songs of songbirds and chirps of bugs all around the place. And amidst all that, he thought he heard sobs. Those muffled sobs that arose from her guts...
Cherry, don’t you cry for me... I don’t deserve it.
He tried to walk forward. The forest is wide and enough for him. He has settled his will and once the court issues his death certificate, all his wealth will be transferred to his family—his only family.
Plus his life insurance money is going to be very substantial. His wife and daughter won’t have to worry about money for the rest of their life.
I’m sorry, I won’t watch you grow up, little Liah... I am sorry...
He knelt on the ground and buried his face in his hands crying silently.
"Ahh!"
He thought he heard her scream and before he knew it he was running in the direction he heard her.
"Cherry!" He shouted only for him to hear his echo. He couldn’t hear even a small sound from her.
"Cherry! Answer me!" He shouted and ran around like a madman.
"Cherry!"
The tall trees all shivered by his roar and swayed to and fro. The sky started to darken with clouds and the wind started to get chilly.
"No...no... Not now..." Liam mumbled.
If it rains now all the trails she left would be gone.
He got more nervous and he couldn’t even find out where the truck was at. All of a sudden all the trees looked the same and he realized that he is running around in circles.
"Cherry!" He shouted as the nerves in his throat popped out.
"Cherry, please..."
He leaned on a tree to catch his breath. He regretted letting go of her. But like always, what good is his regret? She’s...not with him.
He thought he heard something to his right. Some scuffle as if someone or something is getting dragged. He held his breath and walked carefully toward that place gripping his knife.
"Cherry!"
He dropped his knife and ran to the figure slumped down on the ground. Dry leaves were sticking to her hair. Something dark was gathered around her head.
He knelt beside her and lifted her head up. He didn’t mind the sticky feeling on his hand "Cherry," he patted her cheek.
His heart stopped seeing the bloody handprints on her cheek.
"Che... Cherry... Cherry!" He shouted from his gut looking at his bloodied hand.
