Chapter 66: She Cannot Leave

Rory researched more about the Laura Brown case. Only the local news covered it for now. Since it has been just a couple of days since the body was found, the feds didn’t release many details yet.

They did say that they have a list of suspects.

The family of Laura Brown didn’t want to talk to the press and only said that they trust the agents will bring the killer to justice.

Rory did not feel good at all reading those news reports and she decided to visit Liam’s house to change her mind. She is yet to break the news of her leaving to them.

Picking up Ellie, she went to Liam’s house. Mrs. Delport sent her off.

When Mrs. Delport returned, she saw Agnes Roberts sitting by the window watching Rory’s car leave.

"She can’t help but leave..." She said meekly. "He left me too... And he never looked back... Even his casket..."

Mrs. Delport sat by her side and held her hands. The old lady treated her son the same way she treats Rory. He left home after he graduated high school and never returned home.

He didn’t even inform his parents about his decision to settle in his wife’s country after the wedding. Agnes was devastated when she learned of his decision on his wedding day.

But she didn’t even show her disappointment to her husband.

When they were informed of the birth of their first grandchild, Agnes almost jumped in joy. But their situation forbade them from making the travel.

Each Christmas, like a child expecting presents, Agnes would wait for her son’s Christmas card. Each year, they watched their grandchild grow through the family photograph in the Christmas Card.

And then they had to make the travel to that country--for their son’s funeral.

Agnes almost died hearing the news. But she still put on her brave face and stood beside her husband to support him.

His will clearly stated to bury him in his wife’s town. Agnes still cries as she couldn’t even visit his grave as much as she wants to.

In all the sorrow, the only thing Agnes looked forward to was having her granddaughter with her. She looked a lot like her father and Agnes was very happy to get a second chance.

But that was made impossible.

Agnes is someone with great power still. She rose in her position and reached a place where there is no human she needed answering to.

But she caught a tiger by the tail to get there--a very ruthless one. And that tiger needs Agnes to be emotionless.

So others know Agnes as an emotionless, arrogant woman. Only Mrs. Delport knows the heart behind that woman who hides her heart behind iron curtains.

"She will come back. She always does." Mrs. Delport said holding Agnes’ hand.

"She does..." Agnes’ face bloomed with a smile. "Today she sat with me and read books with me..."

"Hmm, she’s very kind, isn’t she?"

"And my great-grandchild, Aurelia... She has the most adorable laugh I’ve ever heard in my life... Of all the pleasant music I’ve heard all my life...her laugh takes the prize."

"Hmm..."

Mrs. Delport listened more to Agnes’ happy rant until she got tired of speaking about it.

"Ah, bring me a cup of tea, Lina," Agnes said with a content heart.

"He was back last night," Mrs. Delport said as she stood up. Agnes’ face hardened up.

Mrs. Delport was sad seeing the happiness of Agnes getting wiped off. But this is necessary. They need to figure out the next step.

"He knew where she was."

Agnes looked through the window for some time. "Did he step inside the house?" She asked.

"No, but he is lurking around her wherever she goes. If she leaves the country it would be impossible for us to protect her," Mrs. Delport knelt in front of Agnes. "Billy... He thinks she’d be safe out of this country. But he will lay his hands~"

"Make a call to Frank, Lina," Agnes’ eyes turned sharp. "Commence operation Switch-bait."

"Yes, ma’am," Mrs. Delport stood up.

They’ve played this elaborate game to bring the both of them here to make sure Rory stays here. They will make it happen one way or another. Liam should have fallen in line. And now, he will...

Mrs. Delport sighed. But she felt no remorse. For them, Rory is the most precious. She will be protected at all costs.

She cannot leave this country ever.

-----

Rory, not knowing about the conspiracies set afoot against Liam, had a nice talk with Claire. Frank came in after a while and he looked a little pale.

After getting refreshed, Frank was in a much better mood and started making fun of everything and anything.

He asked her about Uncle Charles’ visit and Rory told him about her aunt’s plans to extort money from a politician. Frank had a lot of choice words for her aunt and her family and Rory listened to him calmly.

"I am planning on going to Flockton," she said and Frank slammed the table.

"No, youre not! Did Liam agree to it? Is he going with you?" He had a lot of questions.

"What’s the reason?" Claire held her hand. She looked sad and confused.

"Uncle, Claire..." Rory took in a deep breath. "We are getting divorced. Liam waived his custody of Ellie and~"

"Div...? He f#cking did not! I should have killed him when I learned that he was living away from you. He didn’t even look after you all through the pregnancy and even that day he..."

"Uncle," Rory interjected Frank’s angry rant. He already looked red with rage.

"I asked for the divorce..." She lied. Frank shook his head not believing her.

"But Uncle, it is the truth..." She insisted.

Frank calmed down but he was still shaking his head. Rory even talked about how they married with the promise of divorcing and even then Frank was unconvinced.

"I can see you want to protect him, Rory," he said.

"But uncle... It was I~"

" Rory," Frank held her hand. "It’s fine. I am not going to stop the divorce. I never understood what you saw in him to be kind to him. Find someone else. Be happy. I bless you with all my heart. You will be happy... But please, don’t leave the country. Don’t be a stranger to us. Let us watch our grandchild grow.."

"He is right, Rory," Claire held her hand. "You are adults and we cannot interfere in your decision but please... Don’t leave the country..."

Rory didn’t know what to say. She pressed her lips. They are not wrong to want to be a part of Ellie’s life when she grows up.

But...
