Chapter 65: Possible Victim of a Serial Killer
Rory didn’t know how long she stared at the door but she came out of her reverie only when Mrs. Delport entered.
"Are you okay, dear?" she asked sitting beside her.
"I don’t know...." Rory sighed. "Liam... he’s... " she clenched her hands together. "Where did you find him?" She asked.
"By the door... I heard a thud and I found him..." Mrs. Delport said. She knew Liam will not talk about their conversation with anyone else.
"He should see a doctor. I’ve never seen him faint... He didn’t look good, Mrs. Delport," she said and her voice shook. "He’s saying he’s traveling today. Why can’t he rest just for a day? How important is his work to ignore his health?"
Mrs.Delport hugged her and patted her back. Her lips curved seeing the little girl she watched growing up worrying for her husband like any good wife.
"Why don’t you tell him what you feel?" Mrs. Delport asked.
Rory stiffened up. "That... He did not listen!" She stood up and walked to the crib showing her back to Mrs. Delport.
She was not sure Liam would have listened to her.
"It’s nothing, Aurora... He must have been tired..."
’You think so?" Rory looked at her.
"Yeah! He will be better once he sleeps during his flight." Mrs. Delport assured her.
Rory nodded half-heartedly. She was still unconvinced. She felt uneasy for some reason. She didn’t want him to leave.
But they will have to go their separate ways one day or another. He wants the divorce...
She went to the attic to look through the window that has a clear view of Liam’s house’s driveway. She saw Frank driving Liam and watched the car leave, with a pout. She even thought she saw Liam looking in her direction.
Heh, whatever! I am free from worrying about him! I am a nobody to him!
She moped around the house for some time. She even sat in silence with her grandmother. She didn’t know how else she could spend time with her grandmother.
After she was bored, she made arrangements for her to travel to her homeland.
She was bored to death and she called Mia for a chat. The topic of their chat went from their cafe to stalkers, for some reason.
Mia was very angry as she talked about stalkers and Rory told her about the dark figure she saw by her window last night. She didn’t tell her that it was Liam--that fool--but Mia was terrified for her.
Mia told her about the current news about the body of the woman they found in the Angeles forest. When Mia mentioned her name, Rory’s heart skipped a beat.
"I know her!" Rory said patting her chest to calm herself. "We had a class together in the freshman year of college and..." Rory cleared her throat.
She still remembered that day clearly. Laura confessed to Liam after class. Liam smugly pushed Rory to the front. ’Get permission from my wife first,’ he said to her and Rory shrugged shaking her head. ’Nope, too studious,’ she said. Laura was embarrassed. And seeing his smirk Rory believed that embarrassing her was his intention.
But that was not enough for him. He stood up on the bench and with his hands stretched out to the sky, proclaimed loudly for all to hear. ’For anyone who wants to ask me out... Get my wife’s...’ He pulled her to stand with him on the bench. She stood by his side with no embarrassment.
’This sexy redhead...,’ he gave a flying kiss to her and that made her blush. ’She’s my wife... You can confess to me with my wife’s permission. We’ll conduct a joint interview to see if you’ll be suitable for our cult,’ he winked and jumped down. He even helped her down hiding her waist.
He was wild like that. He is unpredictable and yet he included her in everything.
She loved him for it.
The classroom was filled with laughter. Some took it as a joke, some rolled their eyes, and some didn’t mind him. But some...got jealous.
Laura was one of them.
But after that year, they never were in the same class and they interacted never again. She did see her in the bar on the day she went missing though. She had colored her hair to a shade of red and was dancing with her boyfriend. She even was wearing a dress pretty similar to her.
Rory ignored it as a coincidence.
"Last I heard, she went missing. And they found her body?" Rory asked Mia. "I was one of those who were interviewed by the cops. I saw her in the bar and that’s what I told them."
"They are saying that she was likely tortured before she was killed, Rory. But there is not enough proof as her body was mangled by raccoons before it was found by someone... "
Mia went silent and Rory shivered out of fright. She could only imagine the last moments of Laura. No one should go through such torture.
"I hope they catch that beast soon," Rory said from her heart.
"And I hope he gets the death penalty."
Mia agreed but then went silent. Rory too got scared. The world is a scary place for women especially. Statistics say that women, especially women who are alone, are more likely to be in danger than men. It should not be that way. But it is the case.
What can be done to change that?
"Rory... Seeing the video released of that woman from that night... The dress... They say she was likely killed the same day she went missing... And, I thought she resembled..." Mia hesitated to speak. "...you." She said after a pause.
"You think a serial killer might be out murdering redheads?" Rory asked. As much as she felt sorry for Laura, she didn’t think that there is more to that.
But all the times I saw dark figures... Could it be that I am being stalked?
"It is possible," Mia said. "Serial killers do have a modus operandi."
"Wait... Do they think that a serial killer is involved?" Rory asked.
"Yes, apparently there is a similar unsolved case from four years back which involved a woman with red coloured hair. The reporters asked the cops but they said they are not ignoring that angle right now and they are taking every possibility into account."
"Wow!" Rory was surprised. Four years would be when they just entered university.
"And there are more than twenty redheaded women who went missing in that area in just a decade, so..."
Rory was terrified hearing all that.
"Well, I’m a true redhead. So that makes me safe, right?" She laughed and after talking about other stuff to change her mind, she ended the call.
But her mood went worse.
I hope it was that idiot in the dark yesterday...
