Chapter 67: Off Grid
Chapter 67: Off Grid
Liam turned off his phone seeing the strings of calls he received from unknown numbers. He knew they would be the investigators wanting to question him.
He took important phone calls through Jake’s number.
He sat staring at the clouds through the window. It would be better for him if he answers the investigators so they would strike him off the suspect list, but he had a feeling that he will be framed.
And he was probably the last person who saw Laura Brown alive that is other than the killer. After he left Allison’s house, he wandered around and walked off his drunkenness. It was then he saw her-- Laura Brown.
He noticed her only because at a glance she looked like Rory. She was in a car with another person. It was dark and he couldn’t see him clearly.
After affirming that it was not Rory, he left the place.
At least, he believes that he left immediately. He hoped that was the case.
He could be honest with the investigators and tell them what he knows. But...He had a feeling that he won’t leave the interrogation room once he enters there.
"Ugh!"
Liam grunted as he remembered Laura’s face the last time he saw her. His entire body turned cold.
"Sir," Jake’s humble voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
"It’s your cousin," Jake passed him his phone.
"Yes, thanks," Liam got the phone.
"Where are you?" Derick asked first.
"On my way to LA," Liam answered.
"Just answer their calls, Liam. You’re making it worse by not answering. This case... It would be better if you’re not involved, Liam..."
"How serious is it?" Liam asked. He wiped the perspiration on his face.
"The victim’s family sought the support of the local legislature and serious pressure is being put on us. They are planning to make it national headline news. They are digging every missing person’s case in~" Derick sighed. "Tell me the truth if you’re involved, Liam. If you know anything... It could be your friends or... Even a little bit of information would~"
"I know nothing Derick!" Liam shouted. "I didn’t even see her that night. By the way, is Rory~"
"Is she involved?" Derick shouted.
"No! That’s not what I’m saying!" Liam interjected him. "Is she on the interrogation list?"
There was no answer from the other end.
"Derick..? She m is nothing. You met with her that night at our home and she didn’t leave our house till~ "
"Liam, just give your statement once more. It is fine if you missed something a year ago. You can add it to your~"
" Don’t involve Rory in anything. She is... The baby is still small and... She is planning on..."
"Don’t change the topic," Derick’s voice was stern. "Tell me what happened that night."
" Are you talking to me as an agent of the frigging FBI, Derick? Then I’ll answer you as~"
*Beep*
Derick ended the call and Jake immediately got his phone from Liam’s hand before it gets smashed.
Jake met out a sigh seeing his phone safe in his hands.
*Ting*
[Don’t let him get out of sight. And send him home as soon as possible]
Jake answered ’Yes’ to the text sent by Derick.
Liam looked at Jake.
"He wants you to be kept on watch. And he asks you to leave for home as soon as possible." Jake didn’t hide anything.
Liam snorted.
Home... Where is home?
Jake thought Liam snorted as he was annoyed with Derick. He decided to comfort him. "I think he wants you to be under surveillance so that you’ll have an alibi."
Liam turned and looked at Jake. His empty expression turned to something menacing as he smirked.
"Jakey boy..." He patted his arm. "What do you know? Why do you think that I need an alibi when all I want is to meet my lawyer?"
Jake cleared his throat. "I think you’re under the FBI’s radar."
"Oh?" Liam raised his brows.
"Derick’s name is still in the case, but they’ve given him a month-long vacation for his wedding. They won’t ask the MVP to sit on the bench on such an important case, unless..." Jake paused.
Liam cleared his throat. It made sense. Derick is a very capable detective and investigator. He specializes in investigating homicides and murders. They don’t care about his wedding.
There is only one reason they will make him sit this one out—his involvement with me! I must be higher up in the suspect list.
Liam cleared his throat. "Where is he... Derick?" He asked Jake.
"He’s with his fiancee and they reached GRR yesterday."
"Yesterday?" Liam raised his brows.
Why isn’t he staying in grandma’s house then?
But then... That person...
"Yes, sir," Jake nodded.
Liam stayed silent for some time in his thoughts fiddling with the SAK.
"Urrh," Jake’s face twisted seeing a text. "Allison is waiting for you..."
"She does?" Liam smirked. He placed the SAK in his trouser pocket. "Let her wait..." His eyes were serious as if he was planning on something.
Jake noted it.
"Land the jet in Riverside and arrange a rental car for me. No one should know that I am in LA," Liam said after a moment of silence. A corner of his lips was raised higher than the other and he was staring blankly at the floor.
Jake gulped. "Sir, I don’t think it would be~"
"Do what I say!" Liam roared.
He clenched his jaws remembering the tone Allison used on Rory, and her threat that she will tell Rory that he doubted her.
He fisted his hands.

The next day, Rory walked to the attic and back to check whether Liam has returned. Mrs. Delport sighed hearing Rory’s footsteps in the attic.
"Was he here yesterday?"Agnes asked.
" No, ma’am," Mrs. Delport replied.
"Hmm... I wonder who it was this time..." Agnes mumbled. "And Billy..."
"He went off the grid without our interference,"
Mrs. Delport fisted her hands.
Agnes nodded. But her eyes filled with concern.
"How long will they watch it happen, ma’am? Innocents are..." Mrs. Delport sighed.
"Have you heard of the proverb ’Silence is golden’, Lina? My silence is worth more to them... Had I known..." Agnes held her chest and started coughing.
Mrs. Delport ran to her to give her aid.
