Chapter 56: She left

But maybe he knew what those people were thinking, Rory’s grandfather didn’t relent.

Rory still remembered the hour she spent in silence with her grandfather. That was the first time she saw him in person, but he was like a tall mountain. Sitting near him, she felt protected. He had the same features as her father and Rory stared at him. He let her stare.

She still remembered what he said that day. "Come with us, child," he held her hand and it was as cold as hers. "We will look after you. We lost our family too."

He was tall, had a deep, majestic voice, and looked stern. But when he said those words caressing the casket, she saw his entire face twitching and his eyes got red. He looked small with his shoulders hunched, supporting his weight on the casket.

She cried with him as she understood how much losing one’s family hurts. She lost her parents and he lost his only son.

Later when her relatives asked about her decision, she told them that she will go with her grandparents. Had she not heard what her relatives were talking about earlier, she would have opted to stay with them. She didn’t want to leave the small town. But she knew what they were thinking. She wanted to know more about her father’s family and have a change of place. So she chose to leave with her grandparents.

Her mother’s relatives caused a lot of trouble to stop her from leaving. They even hired a lawyer to get legal guardianship over her.

Her grandfather pulled a lot of strings and brought her with him. She knew her relatives were very angry at her for choosing to leave with her grandparents. But she didn’t care.

Her grandparents made sure she does not lose the money she gained. When she turned eighteen, they transferred the life insurance payment to her bank account. But for some reason, her grandmother refused to give her the accident compensation money and it is still with her.

Aunt Theresa is the one who did everything to stop her from leaving. But she stayed in contact. Rory has allowed her aunt to lease her parent’s home for rent. Her aunt agreed to it and until this day, she didn’t receive even a single month’s rent payment.

Her aunt takes it all.

But Rory didn’t care. As long as her parent’s home is maintained, it was enough for her. Rory thought that her aunt would not like the idea of her returning to her parent’s home. She thought her aunt will protest as she would lose the rent money.

But her aunt was very enthusiastic and talked about some election that was about to happen in their town. She asked her to be there after two weeks. The renters will need at least two weeks’ notice, she said.

Rory agreed. She needed to take care of the other issues like Visa and all. She wasn’t very sure of the procedure when she is a citizen of that country too. Her aunt said that her uncle will take care of everything and that all she needs to do is book a ticket and arrive there.

Rory was relieved as her plan to move back there is going without a hitch.

She lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling for some time.

It would be better for me to leave this place before more people start to hate me. At least there... I know they pretend to like me for my money. But here... I thought they loved me for who I am.

Without knowing the corners of her eyes got wet.

*Brrrrr*

Her phone vibrated and she answered the call sitting upright.

"Hello, Mrs. Delport?"

-----

Rory packed her bag carefully without making much noise. She didn’t want Ellie to wake up. It was not Mrs. Delport who called her, but her grandmother. Her voice was not stern as she remembered and she asked her to stay with her for a couple of days.

Rory too wanted a break from Liam. So she decided to stay at her grandmother’s house for that night. Although she is terrified of staying there, she gathered her courage. Ellie is going to be with her this time and she can hug her to sleep.

She does not know how long her grandmother has left and she wanted her grandmother to have some time with Ellie. And she wanted to break it to her that she is planning on returning to her homeland. She knew that her grandmother wouldn’t mind what she does with her life and she was not worried.

But maybe... should I tell her that it is just a temporary move?

After packing the necessities, she informed Claire that she is staying in her grandmother’s house for the night. As she was talking to her, she heard someone pulling up on the driveway. She looked out to see that it is her grandmother’s car. She has sent her car with a driver to pick her up just like she asked her to.

Rory picked up her luggage and the carrycot with the sleeping baby and got down the stairs. She searched for Claire but she was nowhere to be seen. She saw Liam standing by the door with his hands folded over his chest, and sighed.

"Move," she said as he stood there like a rock.

"Where are you going?" he asked. She glared at him for asking this stupid question. He should already know seeing the car. But he stared down at her.

"Grandma asked me to stay in her house for a couple of days," she said and nudged him with her elbow to move him. But he was not moving.

"I can see that. But why are you going?" he asked.

He looked imposing with his angry stare. Rory gulped.

"Don’t go there," Liam said.

"I am going."

"Why?" Liam asked gritting his teeth.

"What do you mean why?" Rory furrowed her brows.

"Then I am going with you." He tried to get the baby.

"No! I came here for my grandmother. You remember, right?" she said.

He gritted his teeth and his eyes turned menacing.

She didn’t care about his anger. "I won’t tell her the truth about the divorce. So don’t fret. Move!" she pushed him aside and walked out.

Liam watched her leave without saying anything. But his hands fisted to balls as the car left.

He felt empty.
