Chapter 57: A Fire Hazard
Rory alighted from the car picking up the carrycot. Ellie was awake by then and smiled at her. Rory entered the house and since it was morning, she did not feel creepy. Her grandmother was in the living room reading a book and she sat in front of her with a smile.
Rory was ignored as usual and she was not even surprised. She was not even sure why her grandma called her to be here. She ignored her grandma and played with Ellie.
Grandma, you are not the only one who can ignore the one sitting in front of you, you know! I can do it pretty well too!
Mrs. Delport smiled seeing the stalemate between the grandmother and granddaughter pair. Both are very similar and maybe that’s why they don’t get along. She got Ellie from Rory’s hands and sat beside Agnes.
At that time, she heard a car arriving and she looked out through the window. It was a rental car and she couldn’t see who was in it.
"The guests are here," Mrs. Delport said standing up. She had a bright smile and almost jogged to the door. "Guess who it is!"
Rory was surprised.
She didn’t remember her grandparents receiving any guests in the past. So who might that be?
She heard the car door open and peeked. A tall, fat man wearing a burgundy suit alighted from the car. Recognizing her, he smiled.
"Rori! Is that you! Look how much you’ve grown up! Why are you standing there? Don’t tell me you forgot this old man already?"
"Uncle gurk Ehem!...Uncle Camp! It is you! Oh my God! I can’t believe it... How can I forget you?" Rory jumped past Mrs. Delport and ran towards him. She was happy beyond belief to see an old family friend from her homeland. This is Uncle Charles Campbell aka The Count. His wife and her mother were best friends and were inseparable.
He is also the father of Ian.
Charles held out his hand with a chuckle. "How are you, uncle? Wow!" Rory hugged him. But she couldn’t hug him closely because of his protruding belly.
"I see you’ve quit working out after I left, uncle," She smiled and kissed his cheek. Charles chuckled.
"You weren’t there to make me run around the town, rascal! Oh, look how tall you’ve become! You’re almost my height!" he rubbed her head.
"Oh, uncle... I think about you and Flockton all the time..." she kissed him again and held his hand tightly. She could not control her grin as she regressed to the happiest part of her life back when she lived in the little town of Flockton.
"What a great surprise! I didn’t expect I’d see you here! How is aunt doing? Is she still learning to cook? Did the papaya tree bear fruits? How is Ian? I am angry at him for not contacting me even once, uncle. After everything, he... And, uncle, how did that gollompus become a gamer? I found out about his channel just a couple of years back. And he is doing good, isn’t he?"
"Oh, dearie!" Charles patted her head. "Take a breath, will you? How can you talk this fast? You haven’t changed a bit..." he chuckled. But his eyes got teary. "And about Ian... Why don’t you ask him?"
"Yeah? Give me his phone number, I’ll..." She paused and turned to her left hearing the door of the driver’s seat open. And out came...
"Ian?" Rory was too stunned for words.
Ian smiled widely rubbing the back of his head. "Hello, Rori!" biting his lip, he waved his hand.
His voice was smooth and mesmerizing as dark chocolate. He was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans and a pair of sneakers. His long messy fringes danced in the wind and he ran his fingers through them casually while his other hand was inside the pocket.
As Rory walked to him, the scent of honeysuckle wafted in the air.
Ah... the scent of home!
She didn’t know if he is wearing a cologne that smells of honeysuckle, or if she is remembering her hometown. But she was instantly exhilarated by the scent.
Their town is surrounded by heather-covered mountains and cliffs. In their parts, they believed that God gave heathers the scent of honeysuckle. She used to walk around and roll and play in those meadows with Ian. Those were pleasant days that she will remember till her last breath.
As she stepped closer to him, his phone blasted up with notifications.
"You got 50 million, didn’t you?" Rory looked at him with his eyes wide. "That was fast!"
"You were following me?" Ian’s eyes lit up. It was then she saw streaks of gold in his hazel eyes.
Man, were his eyes always this pretty?
"Of course!" Rory smiled. "Why wouldn’t I?"
Ian stared at her with a soft smile. He then looked at his phone and shrugged. "I thought it would take at least until the end of today. But..." he met her eyes. "I saw you, and it happened... Rori, as always, you are my lucky charm!"
"Oh, come on, Ian!" Rory smiled. "It’s all your efforts that paid off! Congratulations!" She stepped closer to hug him.
But out of the corner of her eyes, she saw a dirty figure jogging towards her. She stopped and looked to the side.
What is he doing here?
Covered in dirt, it was Liam. Rory did not know why but her legs started walking toward Liam without any hesitation.
Charles sighed at his son looking at Rory bewildered and with his arms still stretched out. Rory was not even caring that she was leaving mid-hug and walked toward this other man.
Isn’t that her husband?
"What are you doing here?" Rory asked dusting out the cobwebs and leaves sticking to his perfect hair. His t-shirt and shorts had catchweeds sticking all over them. And he was wearing his crocs. "You came in through the fence without your shoes on?" she glared at him.
"You forgot your medications," he passed her the box where her fever medications were kept with a wide grin. He enjoyed it when she mothered him.
"You could have come through the road," she spoke in an admonishing tone and started patting off the weeds on his shirt.
"I could have..." Liam looked at her with a smile.
As she helped clean him, Liam’s eyes ended up at Ian and his smile turned to a smirk. He was not feeling great that she was leaving her home. When he saw another car on the road, he had a feeling that something is not right. And so he ran here as fast as he can. And now he knows the reason his wife left him so abruptly.
He is not miles away... He is right here in front of me. And he wants to touch my wife? Heh!
Should I kill him?
Liam’s eyes met with Ian’s and both men clenched their jaws. Their stares were so intense that Mrs. Delport who was watching them thought that they might start a forest fire with their eyes.
This is bad!
