Chapter 55: Lack of Response And Depression
"Do you remember Carla?" Rory asked and Liam looked to the side. He looked like he was not willing to listen to her.
She understood that he does not want to talk to her about the past. But she wanted him to know her side.
"She was one of those girls who were friends with me to get closer to you..." she chuckled awkwardly. During high school and their university days, half of her girl friends were with her just because she is close with Liam. It hurt her, but that is the truth.
"During our senior year, she got herself a "rich older boyfriend", you know, a sugar daddy. Every day, he spent thousands on her and she kept on bragging. I let it go at first, but others pointed out to me that she is bragging to me extra because she is pointing out that you never buy me any gifts and that she has the better boyfriend. It touched a nerve, you know... I wanted to know your feelings toward me. And her bragging got to me. I equated being in love with gifting. It was stupid of me, I know."
She thought he would say something. But he didn’t.
Rory smiled, "Anyway, we later found out that her "boyfriend" was someone else’s husband. I felt bad for fighting with you realizing the bitter truth. So what if she got the gifts? She never got his loyalty. She never got his entire heart. But with you I..." she paused.
Rory let out a sigh seeing his expression still not changing. She hated this part of him. He never acknowledges her feelings even when she is open with them. He does not value her and yet she is...
F*ck this!
Rory got angry but she controlled herself. She needs to change her short-tempered nature and learn patience. This was a learning curve for her. Maybe she is the one at fault. She is the reason she is losing the people around her. She needs to be careful with what she says and does.
He does not want to talk about your past, Rory! He wants to be friends with you! When will you accept that as an adult?
"Did you hear that?" she pointed up the stairs. "I think it’s Ellie..." she stood up and walked to the stairs. At that moment, all she could think of was leaving that place.
But her heart yearned for something and her legs refused to cooperate with her mind. She walked dragging her legs, waiting for the moment Liam calls her. He wanted him to say that he wants to talk to her.
Please, Fizzy... Tell me what you feel... I apologized. I told you I don’t want the divorce. I told you that I still love you. The least you could do is tell me why you don’t like me anymore.
As she climbed each stair, her heart started to feel a crushing pain sinking it lower. Her legs trembled. Her heart wanted to turn and have a look at him. But she forced herself to look forward. Every time she looks at his face, she loses her rationality and starts to treat him as her beloved.
But he does not want her.
More than getting angry at him, she started to despise herself. She got scared.
I am worthless... Who would love me? I can only bring pain... Maybe I deserve this pain or maybe I deserve more pain for occupying this earth... Who would care if I am hurt? Who cares about what I feel? No one wants me.
She cried in her heart refusing to let out her tears. She locked the room and leaned on the door. Clenching her suffocating heart, she bowed and let out a deep breath.
I should have died; not my dad and mum! Why did I live? Am I cursed?
She heard a small creak and her eyes ended up at the crib. Ellie has rolled over and she was sleeping on her belly. She still is not good at rolling to her back and Rory helped the baby to lie on her back. As she placed her down, Ellie let out a loud fart making Rory smile.
What an adorable little munchkin!
She kissed her baby and pulled a chair to sit and watched her baby. The dark vines of depression that wrapped around her to crush her spirit disintegrated into nothing as she watched her baby sleep.
This little one...depends entirely on her. And for her, she will do anything. She will keep herself sane and safe.
With determination, Rory stood up and called her aunt. Her mother’s sister—Theresa Stewart—is the one taking care of her parent’s home and she is the one who wants her to return to her homeland.
Her aunt answered her call almost immediately and when Rory told her her decision about moving there, she was exhilarated. Although Rory did not understand what makes her aunt this happy to be there. It has been years, but she still remembers what her "relatives" were talking about secretly during the vigil of her parent’s funeral.
She was sitting outside in the dark near the living room window. The window was open and everyone thought she was in her room. She heard them fight among themselves to push her to others. No one wanted to take any responsibility for her. They all said that they did not have the money to raise another child.
In the end, they all decided to sell the house and put her in the foster system to be raised by the government.
She still shakes remembering how scared she was that night. These are the people she knew and her parents trusted and yet when she needed them, no one was willing to take her in. She couldn’t fall asleep the entire night. She didn’t want to end up in the foster system. She thought of running away.
But thankfully, her grandparents—her dad’s parents—came the next day and decided to take her with them. Her mother’s relatives agreed, that is, until the will was read.
Turns out, her parents were richer than what those relatives were made to believe. And the life insurance payment she received...was substantial.
Not to mention, since her parents died in a car accident, a substantial amount was announced as compensation money from the local government.
Just like she became an orphan, she became a multi-millionaire—out of nowhere.
After that, everyone wanted to bring her to their home. Out of nowhere, they started to feel bad for sending her to another continent right after she faced a trauma, with a very old couple. They said that they worried about her future.
Money does change minds!
