Chapter 49: [Bonus Chapter]5/5- The Day It All Went Wrong

Rory couldn’t even blink or move after hearing what he said. She could feel the strength in her legs leaving her and she almost fainted. But he was still talking.

"You remember, right? We all went to a bar to celebrate and you returned early because you didn’t feel like it? That night I went to Allison’s place for~"

"Stop!" Rory covered her ears.

She remembered that night. They went out with friends to celebrate the end of their final exams. She couldn’t take alcohol(probably because she was pregnant) and she felt unwell with the noise and crowds. So she returned home early as Liam wanted to stay. As far as she knows, he stayed out the entire night.

He is saying that he cheated on me?

Heh!

Liam slumped to his knees dropping his phone. He shouldn’t have looked at his phone screen. Rory was telling him that she loves him. And like always, he, to his detriment, ignored her and peeked at his phone notification.

But that notification gave him the determination to do what he wanted to do. He cannot distract just because she said that she loves him.

He loves her and she loves him. That is a fact. But he needs to push her far away. He needs to protect his family from himself. They will be safe without him.

He wants to hug her. He wants to tell her that he loves her; he too meant it when he said ’I do’; he saved all his firsts for her because he loved her for years before their marriage; he was not at all drunk when they had their first time but he pretended so to keep her at ease; he enjoyed every moment he spent with her; he does not want to be just friends; he wants to raise their daughter together with her...

But that is not going to happen.

The coming shitstorm is going to be so tough, that he does not want her anywhere near him. She should stay safe away from him. She is strong. She will protect their daughter, he knows. If she does not get distracted by his issues, she will be...

His heart broke to shills. No matter how many times he tries to make himself accept that, he couldn’t.

But it is the right thing to do.

From what he knows and from everything Rory tells him, he has hurt her beyond redemption. Let it be. At least when he moves out of her life, she will have a chance for happiness.

And so he lied. He knew what will hurt her the most. He saw the pain in her eyes when she talked about Allison. She will believe this lie. And this is the only lie he could think of for now that will make her leave him.

So he said what he said.

Well, there is a half-truth there. That night... It was just another "fun" night for them. They all were planning on bar-hopping the entire night.

He was in a dark place then. They had completed their undergraduate degree and he still had no clue what he was going to do next. Plus their marriage was a bumpy ride then. She was fighting with him a lot and he was regretting their marriage. And he "liked" Allison very much then.

Because he could like someone else when he was married, he thought Rory was doing the same too. Derick was going through a divorce then and Rory had a lot of meetings with him.

He did not ask her what was going on but was quick to judge her and thought that there was something else going on between his wife and his cousin. After all, everyone said that Rory broke Derick’s marriage. He believed in "everyone" and not his wife.

Yeah, he was very stupid!

That night (5/5) he was having a lot of fun. And that’s why he thought Rory was trying to be a wet blanket when she told him that she is feeling sick. He didn’t even walk her home and sent her off as he wanted to be out enjoying himself the entire night.

But he couldn’t have fun and he went home to check on her. But when he saw Derick’s car in the parking lot, his tipsy mind connected it differently. He thought that she went home early to meet with Derick.

He returned to the bar with his friends. He was very angry and drinking only agitated him more. He couldn’t believe how she could be cheating on him. Although she never told him that she loved him, she cannot trample on their marriage like that.

He could not let it go. He called her to check if she would be honest with him. But she said that she was alone in the home.

He threw his phone on the bar counter and it broke to shills, just like his rationality.

He drank some more. Some of his "friends" who had guessed the trouble in his marriage and his attraction toward Allison, blew the little spark of doubt in his heart into a fire. When they pushed him to the dance floor with Allison, he went along.

His wife is doing worse—was his thought. Stupid!

He got drunker. Allison danced around him provocatively and he enjoyed it. When her lips grazed on his cheek, he had goosebumps on his skin. When he put her arm around her waist and rubbed his crotch against hers, his heart fluttered. He knew it was wrong and yet he couldn’t stop. It was a new kind of feeling that he could not resist.

After some time, the feeling of guilt vanished completely. After all, in his mind, his wife was doing something worse. It was not wrong if he did that too.

He went to Allison’s place planning on sleeping with her. He almost cheated on her, but he couldn’t. When he was about to enter Allison’s door, Rory’s face appeared on the door. She was smiling the usual way she would smile at him back when they were in high school.

He remembered his love.

He couldn’t bear the thought of touching another woman as he touches Rory. So he left Allison’s place without even entering the door.

Liam sighed. Rory is the only woman he has ever been with. He has no wish to change that. But he has to lie. His eyes ended up on his phone.

On his phone screen, was a news article. The police had officially identified the body found in the Angeles Forest. The body was decomposed heavily and some parts of the woman’s body were missing, but the police were able to identify the body using the dental records.

It was Laura Brown.

She was last seen alive on the fifth of May last year in a series of bars near their University campus. She and her friends were celebrating their graduation when she went missing right around eleven at night.

No viable clues were found of her mysterious disappearance although there are a lot of suspects.

He is one of them.

Rory does not know that.
