Chapter 48: Fifth Of May
Rory could not believe how he thinks that nothing has changed between them. It’s not like they were just friends and had a fight. A lot had changed between them. She lost all her firsts to him. She fell in love with him. He hurt her. And...
She still loves him.
And more importantly, they have a baby.
How can he say that nothing has changed between them?
"We were married, Liam. We were MARRIED! Legally married! And now we are divorced. In every legal record, I will be your ex-wife and~"
"You don’t want it?" he interjected her.
"Want what?"
"The divorce."
"Divorce? No! I never wanted it!"
Rory answered without thinking.
"You didn’t?" Liam’s eyes widened. "You didn’t protest and signed it almost~"
"What else am I supposed to do, Fizzy?" Rory spoke softly.
She was in no mood to hide everything from him anymore. Her pride—what is the use in protecting it? She has lost her first love and it appears that he never loved her. He wants to be like how they once were as if nothing else happened between them.
She was hurt.
And it’s not like she is going to stay here for long. That thought gave her the courage, to be honest.
"Do you remember our commencement ceremony, Fizzy? I do... May 15th... the day I can’t forget. You might not remember but I was trying to talk to you the whole day. But all you did was ask me about the papers. You didn’t spend time with your family, you ignored my grandpa...and...you were with her the whole day..."
Liam bowed his head remembering that day. She is right. He was with Allison the entire day. But for a reason.
He was trying to irritate her and he wanted her to make it a big issue with their family. He wanted to be scolded by everyone. Well, thinking of it now, it seems like he was wrong to provoke her. He could have talked to her. He could have told the truth.
He didn’t think that she will sign the papers so easily. He wanted some punishment for what he did "that" day. He knew his family would kill him for hurting Rory. He wanted that.
That day—May 5th. The day that is hanging as a knife over his head until now. That is the day he wishes to change.
If only he left home with Rory without bar-hopping with others.... If only he didn’t doubt her, seeing Derick’s truck in the parking lot... If only he stayed in his home with his wife without leaving angrily... If only he didn’t go look for Allison...
If only...
"I was going to tell you about my pregnancy..." she said and Liam looked at her with his eyes wide. His face went pale as she continued.
"But you didn’t even bother to hear me speak..."
Liam’s heart rocked like a raft on a stormy sea hearing that. He thought he was riling her up. Seeing her desperation to talk to him, he was happy. But she was about to talk to him about good news... And he pushed her to...
"I was mad. I signed it that day with an earlier date..." her voice shook.
Liam looked at her and she was holding back her tears. He wanted to hug her, hold her, kiss her and tell her that he loves her. He wanted to ask for her forgiveness for hurting her.
He did feel guilty for not being with her and that’s why he arranged for Mia to look after her. He could at least feel a little less guilty about not looking after her during her pregnancy.
He was about to tell her about Mia to cajole her. She should not think that he abandoned her. She should know that he always cared for her; that he still cares for her. He is never going to abandon her.
He placed his hands over her knees, and Rory started speaking again.
"Friends? Like before? We have a child together, Fizzy! Friends..." her voice shook.
"Friends won’t have a baby together, Fizzy. I am not Rachel and you’re not Ross. We didn’t just have a drunken one-night stand for me to get pregnant accidentally, Fizzy! How can you say that nothing has changed between us? We were friends! And then we were married! You wanted a divorce. And now we are divorced! And... We have a baby..."
She stood up rubbing her face. She couldn’t bear it when he ignored their married life altogether. True, their friendship was great. But she loved her married life with him more.
He looked at her.
"Everything has changed, Fizzy! For me... Everything..." Rory said.
"You know what? I get it. You want to forget that our wedding ever happened. After all, we did marry promising to divorce in the future... I get it..." her throat went heavy as she spoke.
He was just staring at her. His lips were parted and yet no sound came out of his mouth.
"Nothing changed for you. But for me... Everything changed the moment I said ’I do’... When I kissed you first on our wedding day... that pause before you said I do... I foolishly thought you meant it..."
The notification tone from his phone made her pause. She wanted him to ignore it, and he did. She continued.
"I get it... Even our first time... you were drunk... I was tipsy and... I can see why nothing changed for you. I can see why you couldn’t care..." she said and his mouth parted to say something. And yet he didn’t say anything.
"You’ve already explained why you don’t want me anymore. I’m sorry for bringing that up again and again. I’m sorry I couldn’t accept your rejection. I won’t bring that up again. I will stop being clingy. But know this. For me... even now..."
Rory gulped as her thoughts flowed out as words. She didn’t remember ever being this open with him, but she wanted to this time. She wanted to let her thoughts out.
"I can’t believe why I cannot hate you still, Fizzy... After everything you put me through... I still love you. And you are right. Maybe we should stay as friends. You are a very important person in my life and you are Ellie’s father too. So...Let’s be friends."
She smiled. It was hard, but she smiled. She wanted him to speak. She’s here, baring open her heart and the least she wanted from him was an acknowledgment. Hell, she wouldn’t even mind it if he mocked her.
But no. He didn’t even look at her face. He started scrolling through his phone.
She pressed her lips together and took in a deep breath and exhaled it slowly. Her tears dried up and she didn’t feel like she has anything holding her back anymore.
If this is how he reacts to her baring her heart, then maybe... he is the problem and not her.
She turned to get inside the house.
"I cheated on you with Allison that night... The fifth of May, last year..."
Rory stopped frozen.
He’s saying what?
