Chapter 165: Understanding the Other Side
The car came to a screeching halt just as they left the underground parking lot and Rory looked to the front. The car was blocked by none other than Mrs. Brown.
Of course, there were reporters behind her with their little cameras.
The chauffeur honked the horn for her to move, but she was not moving. She blocked the road and her brother who was with her helped her.
They tried waiting for almost five minutes, but she did not move. The cops were around but they did not get to help either of them as there were at least ten cameras that were pointed at them. They don’t want to seem partial but rather it made them look incompetent.
Rory sucked in a deep breath. That woman is haunting her and not letting her live in peace. She wanted to end it.
"What are you doing?" Lennon held Rory’s hand as she reached for the door.
"I’ll go talk to her. She cannot..." Rory gulped seeing the darkness swirling inside Lennon’s eyes. Like a deep abyss that was left undiscovered for millennia, it had a certain stillness and beauty to it.
And still, around that darkness was a sea of blue. She read somewhere that blue pigment is rare in nature, especially in animals. And maybe that’s why blue eyes are attractive. And it is sort of mesmerizing.
But the dangerous ones in nature are the attractive ones.
"Uncle," she smiled, hiding her displeasure for Mrs. Brown. She did not like the way that woman is acting to bring justice to her daughter, but that does not mean that she wants her to end up getting hurt. "I want to talk to her."
Lennon nodded. Rory with an unfettered smile turned and stepped out of the car. She heard the door on Lennon’s side opening too and she clenched her fists. It seems like he is going to be shadowing her wherever she goes.
She took a deep breath and held it in her throat as if she was going to dive deeper into the sea, she walked forward.
"I’ll give you five minutes, Mrs. Brown," Rory said rather politely. As she got closer to her, she saw that her eyes were puffed and red. Her clothes were unironed, and her hair was messy.
She surely was not making a scene just for the sake of it. Rory felt pity.
"You," Mrs. Brown’s voice was neither very calm nor even a bit polite. She pointed her fingers at Rory and her entire face was twitching with anger. "You dash in here and think you can get your murdering husband out? Just because you are richer, just because you are influential, just because you have it all..."
Rory could not help but scoff, hearing Mrs. Brown say that she was influential. Never in her life did her influential contacts help her. Never in her life did she feel loved or protected or rested. She had to do everything she wanted by herself. She never had loved ones by her side when she was in trouble ever since her parents and her grandfather’s death; not the ones she wanted by her side, anyway.
Not even her husband.
And it still continues. How does it make her influential?
She is just as pathetic as Mrs. Brown is, except that she has millions in her bank account and a last name that is related to many influential people which helps her with nothing.
"Laughing?" Mrs. Brown walked closer to her. She was shaking in anger and despair. The reporters followed her behind and Rory could hear the incessant clicking of cameras.
"I am not laughing, Mrs. Brown," Rory clarified. "Just like you, I want justice to be served to the true killer. I want to save my innocent husband, the father of my daughter."
"Your husband is the killer, Mrs. Roberts. He is the one who..." her lips trembled. "My daughter... she was an angel! She was kind and she got along with everyone. But you, out of jealousy had your husband kill~"
"Mrs. Brown, please mind your words. Don’t cause such scenes in front of the press. My husband is not charged with any murder. I can sue you for slander," Rory furrowed her brows and turned to leave.
She wanted to assure Mrs. Brown that the true killer would surely be caught, but the words that the woman used are hurtful.
But Rory paused seeing Lennon glare at Mrs. Brown. His eyes were filled with danger. She got scared.
"Stop! Am I causing a scene?" Mr. Brown was not looking at Lennon and grabbed Rory’s shoulders. "You have a daughter. You are just as old as my Laura was and you have a daughter. A family. You went through childbirth like me too, right? Do you remember that pure bliss you had when you held your daughter in your hands first? Didn’t you vow to give your daughter the best? What will you do if you were in my position? What will you do if your dear daughter disappears one night? What will you do?"
Rory looked at Mrs. Brown. She grabbed Rory’s shirt and shook her. Rory was so stunned that she couldn’t even speak. She didn’t think that Mrs. Brown would invoke her four-month-old daughter.
"What will you do if you couldn’t find a single piece of news about her for a year? What will you do when you learn that a monster raped and murdered her. Your precious little daughter that you raised pouring all your love...getting trampled in the hooves of a monster, suffering the cruelest pain in the hand of a beast who~"
"That’s enough!" Rory shouted and pushed the old woman away. She could not even bear to hear her words. How can she talk about a baby this way?
Till now, she felt bad for Laura Brown and even Allison for what they went through in their final moments. But she never imagined their family’s pain to learn what happened to their beloved daughter.
But still...
"She’s just a baby... How could you?" Rory gritted her teeth out of anger, but tears collected in her eyes raring to fall. She held herself back. Her eyes reddened and her lips trembled.
"She’s just a baby..." Rory repeated and took a step back. She couldn’t see anything else at that moment and she couldn’t even think properly. All she had in her mind was her precious little baby.
How can someone imagine the worst kind of pain on that pure little thing?
Maybe Mrs. Brown had realized that she had crossed the line by bringing up a baby in this issue, she wiped her eyes and took a step back. She tried to speak more but she couldn’t find the words. She leaned on his brother’s chest and started to wail.
"My poor little Laura..."
Rory gulped as she sensed a warm hand on the small of her back. She turned to see Lennon standing by her side. He cocked his head gesturing for her to get inside the car.
Rory rubbed her nose to compose herself. Only then she noticed that the reporters were recording and taking pictures pretty close to them.
"My husband is not the killer," she said after she took in a deep breath.
The tears in her eyes were not dried up. They have not fallen to the ground either. With her reddened eyes and face, and with her chin up as she did not lie, she looked at the grieving mother.
"My husband did not kill anyone.," she repeated.
The reporters tried to get closer to her and get more questions, but Lennon brought her inside the car. Rory followed him without saying much. She was more determined than ever to bring out the true killer to justice.

Leroy walked down the stairs holding a thick stack of papers that looked like notes regarding a judgment of a case. He did not mind the commotion around the house as everyone was looking for Sidney.
"Get me a glass of coffee, honey," he asked his wife as he walked to the living room. He turned on the TV to the news.
"So, we have found Aurora, huh?" he slapped his knee.
His son was very panicked a moment ago as he could not find out where Rory was. And now the news is broadcasting that Rory has entered the police precinct with her lawyer possibly to meet her husband.
"She has not called you yet?" Leroy asked Derick who looked very upset.
Derick shook his head and his eyes ended up at the TV screen. "What the..." he pressed his lips to stop himself from cursing in front of his father.
"She is with Lennon?" he asked.
The smile on Leroy’s face decreased. "What is going on?" Leroy tried to find his phone. Penny who brought him coffee saw him scrambling and got him his phone which he had placed under the thick folder.
He thanked Penny and walked out to the porch as he called someone.
Derick watched the screen and watched the whole interaction with Mrs. Brown unfold. Julia and Claire who were in the kitchen came to watch too.
"What a stupid! Why did she even get down from the car?" Derick shouted.
"How can she be left alone like this?" Julia cried covering her mouth. Claire’s eyes were filled with tears too.
Derick was stunned to see the women crying. "She’ll be fine," he assured them. "She’s with Lennon."
