Chapter 163: Unexpected Help
Liam looked at her finding words to answer her. He looked shattered. His eyes moved from side to side as he was thinking deeply. He mumbled something as he wanted to say a lot of things, but she couldn’t hear anything.
She couldn’t bear to see the broken version of the man she loved and wanted to see in an exalted state.
Before Liam could compose his thoughts, the guard opened the door and barged in. "Get out! Time’s over!" he shouted.
Rory didn’t look at him. She hugged Liam. "I am not leaving until you give him something to eat. I will not let you kill him!"
The guard banged the baton on the table urging her to leave. Lawyer Watson entered the room and shouted at the guard that he cannot use force on a woman like that. He also noted the dire condition of Liam and stated the law to reiterate that he cannot be treated this way in police custody.
But the guard did not relent and focused on getting Rory out. Rory even in the commotion dialed Lennon.
"Uncle..." her voice could not overpower the angry shouts of the guard.
"Where are you?" Lennon grumbled. "Who is hurting you?" He shouted angrily.
The guard tried to drag her out and, in the scuffle, the guard grabbed her hair, and she squealed in pain. She lost the grip of her phone. "Help me!" she shouted before she dropped her phone. Still, she did not let go of Liam. As she watched, her phone got trampled in the boots of the guard.
At that time, lawyer Watson received a call, and he squinted his eyes seeing the caller-ID. He ended the call and tried to get the guard off Rory. He tried to convince Rory to leave the room, but Rory was not listening to him.
"Sir," Lawyer Watson’s assistant walked in. "The call..." she held out her phone. "It’s for you. Someone named Gordon Faraday wants to talk to you," she said. She did not want to disturb her boss but the person on the line had a commanding tone and insisted that he talks to her boss. She didn’t know what else to do.
"Gordon Faraday?" Lawyer Watson’s eyes widened. It can’t be him. He looked at his phone and then at his assistant. It is possible it is "The Gordon Faraday", the personal assistant of Jonathan Erling. It was noisy inside the room and so he walked out to answer the phone.
"Is Lady Aurora with you?" the voice at the other end asked.
"Yes," Lawyer Watson asked. But he was a little confused as to why Mrs. Aurora Roberts is mentioned as a Lady. But then this is Gordon Faraday, and he can call her whatever he wants to.
"Pass the phone to the chief," Gordon said and Watson gladly obliged.
There was only a minute-long conversation between the chief and Gordon. Watson saw the chief’s face paling and he almost had a heart attack. The moment the call ended, the chief proceeded to the interrogation room and stopped the guard from forcing Rory out of the room.
In just five minutes everything had changed.
Rory did not know what happened. The lawyer looked perplexed. The chief was extremely panicked and started dancing to her whims.
Rory did not care about others. She asked the chief to stop recording and he agreed to her. When she asked for food and drinks for Liam, he ordered food from the best restaurant nearby. When she asked them for privacy, he left her inside the room alone with Liam and closed the door softly.
Rory did not want to think about what changed the mind of the chief. It could be Lennon. But it was so fast.
She concentrated on getting Liam to eat something. His eyes were so red she could see the blood vessels in the white of his eyes. She figured that they might have kept him from sleeping. Combined with the bright light and other starving and dehydration, explains how hard it is for him to even form a thought.
He should not have suffered like this.
She gently blew the steam off the rice porridge and chicken soup and fed him scoop by scoop. He complained that he couldn’t eat but she gently assured him and made him finish the meal. After the meal, she sat by his side, holding his hands.
After some minutes, she saw the life returning to his eyes. And she was relieved.
"How are you feeling?" Rory asked.
Liam sighed and nodded. His physical body might have gained some strength but it was obvious that his mental state is still not well. He is depressed beyond belief. And he still is tired.
He tried to stand up and she helped him. Sitting on the chair tightly chained to the table had made his muscles contract. He had to lean on her entirely to even take a step. She figured that he wants to use the bathroom and helped him get there. Thankfully it was just the next room and so she didn’t have to carry him for long.
Even in the restroom, she had to help him with everything. He didn’t say anything but she could see that he is not very happy about his situation.
But she didn’t mind that. He would help her the same if the need arises. She knew it.
"You would have needed help after childbirth. I wasn’t there," he said as she fixed his orange overalls.
Only then Rory remembered that he was not there when she wanted him to be there. It was as if she had a selective memory loss regarding that.
She said nothing and smiled at him. She didn’t have any ill feelings towards him at that issue. But about that issue of him getting angry seeing Derick’s car...
"Did you get angry seeing Derick’s car on our parking lot that night, Fizzy?" she asked. She did not know whether it was his sickness or her question that made him uncomfortable but he got pale.
She wanted an answer. And she pushed through. He leaned on the counter as she washed her hands.
"I remember that phone call you made. You asked me about Derick and ended the call. Fizzy, did you think that I was lying when I said that Derick left? Because I mean, you saw his car..." she looked at him.
He opened his mouth. She had a feeling that he won’t give her an honest answer. She interjected him.
"I know I was a little close with Derick those days as he just went through the divorce. I will understand if you felt neglected and you thought that..." she pressed her lips and bowed her head.
No, no matter what, he shouldn’t have arrived at that conclusion. Derick did not want Liam to know the reason for his divorce. Derick was in so much shame then, he didn’t want anyone to know that he was abused by his wife. And she knew Liam would mock Derick rather than try to be his support if she told him the truth. And so, she hid the reason from Liam.
Other than that, she was honest with him.
If he was feeling left out, all Liam had to do was to talk to her. She would have thrown out her promise to Derick and would have explained everything to Liam. She was always that way. For her, no one is more important than Liam.
But he did not talk to her about it.
It hurt her. And she couldn’t even think that he could imagine her—his wife—with his cousin. He should have known better. He never liked Derick, but he should have known that she is not the type who would engage in such demeaning behavior.
"It still was not right," Liam said.
He knew what she was thinking. He could see it in her face. She is hurt. He was shocked that the truth he tried to hide is revealed. But they are under investigation. It must have been the cops who could have told her that.
It would have been different if he talked to her about his stupid thoughts of the past and begged for forgiveness. But he didn’t bring himself to do that. And now, she heard it from someone else.
Of course, she would be hurt.
And still, she is here, taking care of him.
Rory looked at him. His words... were not much, but it was enough confirmation. She couldn’t even cry as she was so shocked. She left him and turned to leave. She did not like to look at his face anymore.
"Cherry, stop," he shouted. "I am sorry."
She did not want to hear him speak and walked to the door.
*Clang*
She heard a noise behind. It was followed by a thump. Liam has fallen. She wanted to leave him to rot in here, but she couldn’t bear to do that. She turned and walked to him to help him up.
Will she forgive him for doubting her relationship with Derick? No.
But will she let him rot in this place and die? No!
She decided not to think about that for now. Compartmentalization—that’s the only way. She can talk to him about it after he is home safe with her.
"Those pictures," she asked him the same question.
"It was uncle Lennon," Liam said. "And Cherry..."
As he was speaking, the bathroom door opened.
