Chapter 161: Her Husband’s Lies

Rory could see that the detective was serious. She didn’t want to leave without seeing Liam. The assistant advised Rory to leave. She said that there will be other ways to meet Liam and that she doesn’t have to talk to the detective.

Maybe the detective could read Rory’s thoughts, she spoke turning Rory’s attention towards her.

"It would greatly help if you started answering my questions," Detective Giles said biting the back of the pen she was holding.

Rory nodded and walked to the seat not minding the loud sigh of the assistant.

"Ask away," she stared at the detective. If she is getting forced to be here, she won’t be very courteous. She will have to accept it. It’s not like she is doing everything according to the rules.

Detective Giles sized her up. "You don’t even have to do it. Your grandmother...One word from her, your husband won’t even be in here. Why~"

"My grandmother is sick. She can’t help me. Next?" Rory interjected the cop and said in a plain tone. She did not like talking about her grandmother.

"Is she very sick?" the detective asked.

Rory let out a deep breath. "I didn’t know you were going to question about my grandmother," she said hoping to put an end to that conversation.

But the detective didn’t look pleased. She was either chewing the back of her pen or she just poked the back of the pen into her teeth.

It annoyed Rory. She tried her best to be patient.

"Is it true that your grandmother wanted to commit you to juvenile detention center when you burned the hair of a high school girl?" the detective asked, this time sucking on the back of the pen.

"My all-powerful grandma would have committed me wherever she wanted to. But my grandpa didn’t let her. Is that all you need to know?" Rory didn’t even try to be polite anymore.

"Looks like you didn’t want to talk about your grandmother," Detective Giles said with a sigh. "Must have been hard growing up without any love. All the love you got was from your equally disturbed blond-haired neighbor..."

"What are you insinuating?" Rory knitted her brows. She was this close to getting up and leaving.

"Nothing...just... He is all you have, and you are trying your best to protect him, aren’t you?" the detective asked.

"Protect him? If I am doing that, I am doing the worst job on that. He’s already in jail and I am talking to you unnecessarily just to meet with him. What do you think about that?" Rory questioned.

"Fine..." Detective Giles cleared her throat and sat straight. "I’ll come to the point. May fifth, last year... You gave a previous statement that you returned home early because you felt sick and that your husband was home only on the early morning, right?" she asked.

"Yeah," Rory nodded.

"Are you sure that your husband didn’t return home? He might have returned and saw something that might have provoked him that led him to wander off in the night and..."

"He did not return home. He was with his friends the whole time..." Rory gulped. "Well, he said he went to Allison’s home to...drop her off," she said after some thought.

She didn’t have to tell the cops that her husband tried to cheat on her. She didn’t want the whole nation to know that. And hiding that fact won’t be...

Aww... It is important for Allison’s case...

"Drop her off?" the detective latched on to that. "Didn’t Allison have someone else to drop her off?"

Rory shrugged. "Don’t know..."

"Mrs. Roberts," the detective leaned forward. "It must be hard for you to accept the truth, but... Have you wondered if your husband might have lied about that night to you?"

"No. He doesn’t lie to me," Rory said. She knows the truth, but she didn’t want to acknowledge it to the detective.

The detective tapped the pen on the table for some time while observing Rory. Rory averted her eyes. The sound of the pen and the sight of the pen itself irked her.

"Mrs. Roberts, just because you choose to bury your head in the sand, doesn’t mean that the world has gone dark..."

"Okay..." Rory wetted her lips. It was very hard for her to get reminded that her husband tried to cheat on her with the woman she hated. But she didn’t want to accept it.

Maybe it was her pride that stopped her. But she just didn’t want to.

"Mrs. Roberts," the detective was not letting go of that topic. She saw how uneasy Rory was and she wanted to extract the truth from Rory.

Rory clenched her hands. She lied to the cops and now the cop caught on to it and she would try to make her change the statement which would imply that she lies to cops. That wouldn’t be good. She should have listened to the assistant and should have kept her quiet.

Ah, I am so stupid!

"Your husband was seen dancing very closely and provocatively with Allison that night, Mrs. Roberts. And then he walked out with her..." she paused seeing Rory’s pain-filled face.

Rory really didn’t want to continue the conversation. But she knew she cannot get emotional at this time. Then she will make more mistakes.

"I know it is hard to acknowledge it, but... As one wife to another... And trust me, I was married to this scumbag who cheated on me. There were signs, you know... some clear signs that I chose to ignore. In your case too... I sympathize with you. It must be hard, even now... trust me, I understand that. But did you have any reasons to doubt~

"Allison lived in a good neighborhood. There must have been security cameras that would have captured them together. How long did he stay in her house?" Rory asked. Her eyes were clear and she had succeeded in composing her emotions then. "He didn’t even enter his house, right? I am sorry your husband cheated on you. But my husband never cheated on me. I know him. He’s too stupid to be that brazen."

The detective paused in the mid of swallowing. She then cleared her throat and rubbed her throat trying to compose herself. She was obviously embarrassed.

"Then why are you lying?" The detective asked. "Why are you hiding the fact that your husband returned home just after you returned but then he left angry?"

"He did?" Rory raised her brows. She truly didn’t know that Liam returned behind her. But if the detective is so sure about that, then there should be proof of that.

"And he went and picked up Allison right after that. His friends told us that he acted differently after he returned from home. He got himself drunker and he got a bit violent and impulsive. What might have happened?" the detective asked.

"How would I know? If you saw the footage, you’d know that he didn’t get to our home. I didn’t see him after I left him at the bar and he only called me once that night and that too from the bar. And it doesn’t take a lot for my husband to get angry," Rory said what she knew.

She didn’t know what this detective is meaning to say. She wanted to believe that there is nothing more to it but she couldn’t trust Liam entirely. He does have a habit of hiding things from her and he might have hidden something else from her.

But what is it?

"For university students, you did live in a very uppity place. There was clear footage," the detective said and Rory could sense jealousy in her tone. She did not answer her. She knew they lived a better life than most.

"His cousin met with you that night?" the detective asked and Rory furrowed her brows.

"Yes, I did mention that in my statement. Agent Derick Roberts visited me that night. I bet he corroborated it too," Rory said wanting to remind the detective that Derick is not just Liam’s cousin. He is also an agent in the most reputable organization.

The detective furrowed her brows and tapped the pen on her puckered lips.

"How long did he stay in your house? Just for reference?" she said after a while.

"Probably for fifteen to twenty minutes. It wouldn’t be any more than that. He drank a cup of coffee and left. He had a date with his now fiancée..." Rory gave all the details she knew.

"How is your relationship with your husband’s cousin? And how do the cousins get along? You’re from a big family and there is bound to be some... I know because I too~"

"Our relationship is just normal..." she interjected her. She did not like how the detective tried to be overly wordy. She didn’t have to try this hard. She is not following the protocol and she cannot hide it by trying to be sympathetic.

The detective pressed her lips. "Hmm...But he left his car in your apartment building parking lot?"

"Yes," Rory said. She did not want to tell the reason to the cops. That was unnecessary.

"The footage..." the detective looked up at the camera. "I am not supposed to show you that. But... Your husband got angry after seeing that car. Did he by any chance thought that you and his cousin are..."

"That’s enough!" Rory banged the table.
