The Secret Obsession of the CEO
Chapter 160: Denied Meeting

Chapter 160: Denied Meeting

Rory walked to the coffee shop in front of the building and sat hiding behind a pillar. She did not want to be spotted by the reporters and at the same time, she didn’t want to miss the arrival of the lawyer.

Laura Brown’s mother was answering the questions of the reporters. There was a elderly man beside her to support her. It was her brother, Laura Brown’s uncle. She lost her husband and Laura was all she had. And after her passing, her mother is devastated.

Rory didn’t want to look at that anymore. She thought that Mrs. Brown is making a mockery out of her daughter’s death. She could silently grieve for her daughter than try to ruin the life of an innocent man... If she is really grieving, why is she putting herself in front of the reporters? Does she want her 15 minutes of fame?

Rory bit her tongue to stop herself from thinking further. No matter what, she cannot judge someone for what they are doing.

Rory remembered Derick saying that Allison’s relatives have connections and she wondered if they might be responsible for the struggle Liam is going through.

Or it could really be... Ahh!

She wanted to scream. It is still hard for her to accept that the one Liam trusted so much is the one who put him in prison for something he didn’t do. She believes that Jake and Lennon are working together.

Jake is the serial killer and Lennon is trying to protect Jake and throw Liam under the bus. But why? She kind of had an idea, but she didn’t want to arrive at a conclusion regarding this without definite proof.

Liam would be so hurt!

As she was in deep thought, she noticed someone staring at her. Someone who was standing in line to get coffee was taking glances at her and she was sure that he took a picture in his phone.

Rory figured out that he might be a journalist. She knew it was not very smart to hide in a coffee shop just opposite to the police precinct. She stood up and carrying her purse dashed out of the coffee shop.

She saw the reporter following her and he was calling others to inform them of her position. She looked across the road and saw a couple of people dashing at her with their cameras and recording devices.

She knew running away won’t help. She stopped and walked at the building. She decided to face the music and enter the building.

Just as she stepped on the stairs of the building, the reporters all swarmed around her. She was surrounded on all sides and didn’t even know where the stairs are at as they pushed and prodded around her.

She was stuck in the middle.

Rory felt like fainting seeing all the flashes around her. She couldn’t even make out the questions that were asked as they all talked over each other. And even if she tried to push through, she was not allowed to pass as she was surrounded.

Just as she was about to lose hope, she heard a loud noise behind her.

"Move! Step aside! Yeah, yeah... I’ll answer it... No comments!"

Rory saw Lawyer Watson walking toward her. In mere seconds he joined her, and he had a little posse of assistants and paralegals with him. They effectively formed a cover around Rory, and they entered the building without getting stopped by the reporters.

"There you go. Your face will be plastered all over the nation. I would advise you to delete all your social media accounts. I saw that you’ve private-ed it. But it won’t be enough," he spoke as he walked.

"Okay," Rory turned on her phone and did as the lawyer told her. She didn’t have any attachment to her social media accounts. She just had them and occasionally posted on them just because everyone else did.

"We will go and talk to the..."

As he was speaking, they heard a loud shout from a woman behind. "Stop!"

Rory stopped and turned to look behind. It was Mrs. Brown. She was running at them. It was a little pitiful to see an elderly woman trying hard and running behind her. Rory almost answered her. But the assistant of the lawyer shook her head at her. "Don’t stop. She has a couple of reporters following her," she said, and Rory nodded.

But Mrs. Brown was still running behind. "I just want to ask you one thing. Wait..." she shouted.

Rory clenched her jaws and walked inside the room the lawyer led her. She did not want to give fodder to the press. They just want drama to write in their papers.

The chief of police smirked seeing them. He cocked his head to ask them to take a seat. His attitude screamed that he is not willing to listen to them. The lawyer took a seat, but Rory was not in the mood to take a seat. She stood behind the lawyer.

"A visitation," the lawyer said and the chief smirked.

"No. We cannot allow visitations... unless..." he raised his brows. "...Mrs. Roberts is willing to compromise," he stared at Rory from head to toe. Rory rubbed her neck as she felt very uncomfortable with his stare.

Lawyer Watson banged on the table. Although Rory could not see his face, she could see that his jaws were clenched. He was mad. And she felt a little safe in this place.

"What? I meant that if Mrs. Roberts co-operated with questioning, we can allow her to meet her husband," the chief of police said.

Lawyer Watson looked at Rory trying to know her opinion. Although Rory did not find the deal very proper, she was so intent on meeting Liam. She needed to ask him something and more importantly, she wanted to make sure he is doing well.

She nodded agreeing to the interrogation. She was not involved in any way, and she was sure that she can speak the truth about anything they ask her. So, she was not worried.

The chief of police stood up seeing Rory’s approval. He rang a bell and his assistant came running in. "Take Mrs. Roberts to the interrogation room. Ask Giles to do the interrogation," he said.

Lawyer Watson stood up and walked with Rory, but the Chief stopped him. "She goes alone," he said.

"No way. My client will not go alone for interrogation," the lawyer denied.

Rory stopped too. As much as she wanted to meet Liam, she didn’t want to put herself at risk by getting inside an interrogation room alone. She is not that stupid.

The chief saw Rory’s refusal. "Maybe you can send in your assistant. No one else," he said.

Lawyer Watson glared at him. "Oh, cut it out, Watson! I have a lot to discuss with you. Come with me..." the chief dragged him along.

Rory nodded at the lawyer telling him that she is okay to go in with his assistant. She wanted to meet Liam.

They brought her to the interrogation room, and she sat there with her head bowed. They asked her to hand over her phone, but the assistant promptly stated that it is not legal to get her phone when they don’t have a warrant for her phone.

The assistant asked Rory not to accept anything offered by the cops including any drinks or food. Rory accepted. She knew that they could get DNA samples from those things. She did not want to let the cops have her DNA for any reason.

After a short while, a female detective entered the room and she started with some basic questions. She even asked about her baby and told her about her baby, trying to make a bone with her.

Rory understood their tactics and was not fazed. She just answered the questions that were asked to the best of her knowledge.

The detective first started questioning by asking about Allison. Rory tried to hide the disgust she had for Allison but she was sure the detective caught up with it.

"Did you by any chance sent any messages to Allison on 4/25?" the detective asked.

"No," Rory answered.

"Could somoene have accessed your phone that day?" she then asked.

"No, my phone is fingerprint protected. No one other than me can unlock my phone. Well, it can be unlocked with a password too. But only Liam knows the password," she said.

With every answer Rory gave, the detective was seriously scribbling on the notepad she had. That act itself made Rory very conscious. Having her every word noted down as if there might be something wrong that could be found later...

It scared her.

"Did you by any chance contact Laura Brown on 5/5 last year?" she asked.

"What? No!" Rory said. The assistant shook her head as she didn’t want Rory to answer any more questions.

"I thought we are here to talk about Allison’s case. Why are you asking about Laura Brown?" Rory asked. "I can leave, right? I am not supposed to be here as I recall?" she asked.

The detective smiled and nodded. "Of course, you can leave if you want, Mrs. Roberts. We will ask for your co-operation once more when we need it."

Rory smiled. "Of course. Now tell me where I can meet my husband."

"Well, that..." the detective smirked. "I should leave this room to show you where your husband is."

"Well, that’s good. Come on!" Rory pointed at the door.

The detective chuckled. "I want to. But I was told not to leave this room before you answer all the questions!"

Rory’s heart skipped a beat.

What is this about? They are blackmailing me?
