Chapter 150: Past Connection

Rory did not expect to see the angry expression on Lennon’s face. She was startled. "Uncle, I... With the situation with you and...," she smiled awkwardly. "I didn’t want to...impose on you."

Lennon’s eyebrows relaxed a bit and he took a step back. Although he seemed to have accepted her answer, he still was not convinced.

"Uncle," Rory held his hand with a sigh. "Already because of Liam, you are losing a lot of money. I..." she couldn’t continue as she choked.

"Alright, wipe your face. Don’t cry..." Lennon said. And he had calmed down immediately. He then turned to Bobby. "Thank you so much for offering help to my niece. I’ll take care of her from now on," he said.

Bobby nodded and took a step back placing the cash back in his pocket.

Rory was stunned. It seems like the men decided among themselves. No one bothered to ask for her opinion.

"Get in," Lennon said. "It’s getting late."

"Okay," Rory nodded. "Bye, Bobby," Rory smiled at him. "I’ll meet you soon."

Bobby nodded. Rory walked to the aircraft, and she felt something heavy getting placed in her hood. She turned out of instinct.

"A spider," Bobby dangled a spider from his fingers and Rory almost jumped in fright. Bobby smiled at her, and she nodded in acknowledgment.

Bobby had placed the cash in her hood.

She could only smile to show her gratitude. Only heaven knows how happy she is that she has that cash now.

They settled in the aircraft and within some minutes the aircraft took off. Rory asked about Sidney and Skyla. Lennon said that Sidney is staying with Skyla back home and that it was just a short trip. He will be back home for Derick’s wedding.

Rory wanted to ask about the problem between him and Sidney. But she didn’t want to talk about it in Jake’s presence.

Rory thought Ellie would cry during take-off, but she didn’t even wake up. Rory was glad.

She closed her eyes as she didn’t want to engage in any conversation. She was so worried about Liam. She tried to fall asleep, but she couldn’t. And she felt a lot uneasy. She had a feeling that something is going very wrong with Liam.

Fizzy, how are you doing?

Although it was a small aircraft, it had a small kitchenette and a restroom. Rory was only pretending to be asleep, but she could hear Lennon and Jake talking about business all the way. Most of their conversations were about handling the losses and trying to convince their partners and investors to continue with their support.

In the middle of the flight, Rory had to use the bathroom. When Rory got out of the restroom she saw Jake preparing coffee in the kitchenette.

She walked to him.

"You must be a very good assistant. You still have a job even after trying to send your boss to jail," she said pouring a glass of water for herself.

Jake did not answer her. Rory scoffed.

"Is this your first visit to our town?" she asked.

"No. I’ve been there briefly in the past," Jake answered not looking at her.

"Yeah?" she asked. "It is funny, human brain... Just because someone dresses differently, it thinks that they are different."

Jake stopped and leaning on the counter looked at her with his arms folded over his chest. "What do you want to know, Mrs. Roberts?"

"You certainly have upgraded considerably, Jake Gyllenhaal...." Rory smirked. "From dirty overalls to Armani... For a convict, that’s pretty..."

When she went through the pictures she found in her grandma’s house, she remembered something. Her grandparent’s house had chickens for as long as she remembered. In fact, even her father said that they raised chickens in their home.

She knew that even the workers who take care of the chickens were vetted and had to sign NDAs to be able to get paid. That’s how much of a big shot her grandmother is!

And so, the turnover of the workers in the house was massive. Even a slight mistake will get one fired. But still, they didn’t lack employees because of the double pay.

One such turnover of employees happened when she was thirteen. She remembered because she noticed one particularly handsome young man in dirty overalls in her backyard one day.

Dark hair, dark eyes, tanned skin... someone opposite to her. Her type. We always admire what we are not better than what we have.

She used to take a look at the chicken coop which she was not interested in till then after she noticed that young man’s presence. His air of aloofness, not minding her stares and his calmness knowing that she is staring at him... she loved it all.

And she stared at him all the time. It was a popular pass time for her for a couple of weeks. She thought she was in love. From how others talked to him, she learned that his name was ’Jacob’.

A crush... Or probably an infatuation...? Her first infatuation... Puppy love. That’s what they call it, right?

She tried to strike a conversation with him. She had to gather a lot of courage for that. But she did. She always tries her best to get what she wants. She wanted to talk to him, and she got over every hurdle there is. Except one.

Her grandmother.

She was promptly stopped by Mrs. Delport from talking to that guy. She was not the least impressed by her interruption. And she somehow couldn’t end up staring at that guy for a few days as she was busy doing something else.

She remembered not seeing him some days later. When she was looking everywhere for him, she remembered her grandmother looking at her. And the smirk on her face...

Oh, how much she hated that...

She was mad at her grandmother for a long time. Months, perhaps. but like every other teenager who had infatuations, she got over that soon. And she forgot about it later.

Jacob... Jake... This guy...
