Chapter 151: Not Fired
Chapter 151: Not Fired
Jake looked at her without even the slightest tint of fear that he got caught by her. But that is to be expected considering that he is a psychopath. He cannot assess risk properly as his brain is wired differently.
He was calm and resumed brewing coffee.
"After getting fired by my grandmother, you sank your claws on Uncle Lenny? Did he know about your past when he hired you?" She asked.
Jake did not answer her. And Rory got uneasy that she is getting ignored. But he was calm and aloof. The quality that she found to be attractive now made her blood boil. She found Liam’s annoying habit of speaking without thinking twice before this aloofness. At least, she would know what Liam is thinking and whether he is angry or not. But this guy...
Who knows what he is thinking? He probably is killing her in his mind a hundred times over.
She placed the glass on the counter and turned to leave. She tried to open the sliding door, but it was stuck. She winced as a warmth spread on her back. Jack, standing close to her, went for the knob of the door.
"I thought you would be smarter than this, Miss Roberts..." Jake whispered in her ear. "I guess, I was wrong. Liam too... No wonder you two fell for each other."
His tone was so patronizing, that Rory gritted her teeth. He addressed her as Mrs. Roberts earlier acknowledging her as Liam’s wife. But when he talks about her intelligence, he is invoking her maiden name, and thus insinuates that she is the dumb granddaughter of the great and smart Agnes Roberts.
She turned and folded her hands over her chest to create a distance between them. Jake took a step back.
"I am surprised that you remembered me from then. But I... The day I first met you, well, to be honest, the day I first saw you in person was when you visited Fitzwilliam in his office..." he smirked.
Rory shrugged. It hurt a bit hearing that. She spent a good month thinking about him and watching him, but he didn’t even spare a glance at her.
Ah, how could he not? He must be lying!
She told herself to comfort herself.
It made sense. A careful person like him, not even sparing a glance at the rumored granddaughter of his then boss... It did not seem very likely.
She might not be able to read his expressions as he doesn’t have many emotions to spare, but he can read her like a book. Minding that, Rory stood with her back straight.
"I’ve forgotten about you too, until..." she smirked.
Jake raised his brows. He was curious.
"...Liam mentioned you. I remembered the psychopath I kept observing when I was a teenager," she said without breaking her smile.
Her snipe at him didn’t even affect his mood a little. He shrugged.
"Maybe I am wrong, Mrs. Roberts. Maybe you are smart. No one has figured out who I am without me telling them till now. You are the first," he smirked.
It looked like mocking. Or she took it as mocking. She has only heard stories of her grandmother’s intelligence and prowess, and she knew she is nothing compared to her grandmother. Maybe that’s why her grandmother avoids her.
Maybe, her grandmother does not hate her. It probably is just disappointment.
"You are truly interesting."
Rory winced feeling Jake’s breath on her. She was in her thoughts, and she hadn’t realized that Jake had stepped closer to her. She took a step back and her back pressed on the sliding door with a slight thump. With widened eyes, she looked at him.
"Then perhaps, you should know that I was never fired. I just found a better offer."
Jake hissed and stood straight. Rory found her knees going weak.
He must be lying. Or is he...?
He still might be connected to the photographs.
Or perhaps... He is not. Perhaps, he’s just...
She took a deep breath.
"Okay, I believe you. I must have been mistaken then. It must be hard for you to always get judged by who you are and what you did a long time~"
"What do you want, Mrs. Roberts?" Jake interjected her.
Rory gulped. Or pretended that she was not lying and got caught. She even acted meek by scrunching her shoulders. Jake accepted her plea and took a step back.
"Would you mind giving me a spare key to Uncle Lenny’s old mansion?" she asked as he tried to open the door.
Jake scoffed.
"I want someplace to stay when I am in LA. Somewhere the reporters won’t reach me and~"
"Don’t bother." Jake slid the door open. "I am not doing anything unless my boss asks me to."
Rory sensed that Lennon is standing up.
"Who is your boss, Jake?" she asked only for Jake to hear.
He turned and smirked. For the first time in the short minute of conversation she had with him, she saw amusement on his face. Real Amusement.
"You truly are interesting, Mrs. Roberts," He walked with a larger gait. "Sorry for the wait, boss," Jake offered him the coffee cup. "The door got stuck again."
"It seemed like you two were having a lovely conversation. I rarely see you in good spirits, Jake," Lennon said.
"I wanted him to sneak me a key to your old mansion, uncle," Rory answered. She didn’t want Jake to say something unnecessary.
"For my stay," she added seeing Lennon not answering her and taking a sip of the coffee.
She could say that he was not interested in lending her his mansion. She waited for his response, nonetheless.
"I have an apartment in Georgetown. It’s not fancy or anything. I go there when I want to lay low and think. It has security and the reporters won’t find you there," Lennon said after finishing his coffee.
Rory kneeled in front of him and held his hand with a bright smile. "Thank you so much, Uncle. I am familiar with Georgetown. I live just ten minutes from there... Thank you so much, uncle. "
Lennon patted her head. "See, you can ask me directly. I will never refuse to help you. You are my dear-est...niece," Lennon said.
"Thank you, uncle..." Rory kissed his cheek and hugged him.
Jake cleared his throat and walked to his seat as Lennon hugged her back.
