Chapter 148: Leaving The Town(2)

Spikes chased Rory while barking. Rory heard the front door opening.

"Who’s there?" Frank shouted. And Rory heard the sound of a shotgun cocking.

Spikes was barking at her although he didn’t follow her anymore. She knew Frank would shoot in her direction if Spikes kept on barking.

"Come on out!" Frank shouted and stepped out to the porch. Rory saw Derick has joined Frank too and turned on all the outdoor lights.

Rory didn’t stop. She didn’t want them to know that she is planning on leaving the house. They won’t let her.

"Stupid dog! Go away!"

She hissed at the dog and hid behind a bush. She would be caught if she moves even a bit. She hugged Ellie close, hoping that she would sleep more comfortably in her embrace. She hoped Derick won’t come out for a sweep.

She kept an eye on the front porch. Derick and Frank were talking among themselves and staring in her direction. Leroy joined them too. And they were unconsciously looking at the gates at the reporters. Rory figured that they might be thinking that a reporter sneaked in.

But will that calm them down?

Spikes kept on barking. Rory almost lost hope.

"You are trespassing our property, buddy. Show yourself and you can spare your life!" Frank shouted and walked down the stairs.

From the bush, Rory could see that Frank is pointing the gun right at her. It was as if he figured out that she was there. She would have stayed and played chicken with a gun if Ellie was not in her arms. But she didn’t want to take a chance now. She wouldn’t put Ellie in harm’s way.

She decided to stand up. Frank won’t shoot her and would be shocked to react immediately. She decided to use his shock and make a run for it. He won’t shoot at her, and he won’t be able to catch her either.

But Derick would be a problem. She cannot outrun him.

Rory sucked in a deep breath and was about to stand up. Her secrecy is not worth taking a chance on Ellie’s safety.

Just as she was about to get up, Spikes got distracted by a rat and started chasing it. Rory smiled in glee as Spikes sometimes barks unable to curb his instinct for hunting. He is a hunting dog after all. He loves chasing little animals. And although he is trained, he is not the perfect guard dog and at times he would alert the owners for nothing.

She observed Frank and he disappointedly shook his head. The three men walked inside the house thinking that Spikes made this commotion because he was chasing a rat.

Rory sighed in relief.

She sat there unmoving for a few more minutes. She saw someone peeking out through the curtain in the living room. Her hair stood on edge.

It must be Derick.

She stayed hiding in the bush for a couple more minutes and left only after all the lights turned off. She knew the path to her grandma’s house by heart and she could walk without any trouble even without having a torch.

"You’re late," Bobby said looking at his watch as she got inside the fence.

"Yeah, sorry..." Rory smiled awkwardly.

"Heard dog barking," Bobby said and carefully got her luggage and Ellie from her hand.

"It was the family dog. He’s..." Rory shrugged and buckled the car seat in the back. "How are we getting there?"

"Get in," Bobby helped her tucking in Ellie. "She’s so adorable," he smiled before he gently closed the door.

"She is!" Rory was proud. Of course, anyone can see how precious her adorable daughter is.

Rory hid on the floor of the car as it passed through the reporters. Rory saw that the crowd has thinned after the news about the bodies found in the woods. They probably are more focused on that story.

"There is this little airstrip just North of the town close to the woods," Bobby said.

"There is?" Rory raised her brows. She and Liam have explored every part of the town and they never came across an airstrip. And she has never once heard any rumors of an airstrip either.

A secret airstrip? If so, am I going on a private plane?

Rory had a lot of questions, but she didn’t ask them. She figured it must be one of her grandma’s secrets. And she confirmed that Bobby is not a lumberjack. He must be a spy.

"And... You don’t mind company, right?" Bobby asked. With his eyes furrowed, he looked very somber.

"Company? That’s alright," Rory nodded.

She didn’t want to voice her concerns. She would feel uncomfortable sharing a private plane ride with the company. If it is arranged by her grandmother, then she didn’t find it objectionable. And Bobby is doing her a big favor. She didn’t want to be ungrateful.

And she felt awkward asking Bobby about the money she asked to arrange. She would have asked openly had Bobby accepted the jewelry, but having given no surety, she was hesitant to brazenly ask for money.

She saw the picture on Bobby’s dashboard. It was his wife’s. She looked young in the picture and had the smile of a model. Without knowing, Rory’s lips curved into a smile seeing the beautiful woman.

She is familiar... Where have I seen her before?

Bobby said that they fell in love when they were pretty young too. They are in their thirties, and they are still going strong with two kids. And that gave her hope too.

If only Liam’s eyes don’t wander again!

Thinking of Liam, her heart sank. She hoped they are not hurting him. Because if she learns they did hurt him, she is going to...

What can she do? With all the influential people around her, she is still getting helped by a stranger with a good heart.

Well, it might still be grandma, though!

A voice inside her heart said. She sighed. They passed the town and the school and were going north. Her eyes ended up at the picture once more.

And then it clicked. She remembered where she has seen her before.

"I am sorry... but was your wife a model before?" Rory asked.

Bobby looked at her with a smile. "You recognize her?" he asked. His eyes shone with excitement.

"Yeah...Scarlett... she was a pretty famous model, right? She was on the cover of pretty much every magazine there is... It is her, right? Am I-"

"You are right! That’s my girl!" Bobby was pretty happy.

"Yeah? I remember her. I used the lip gloss from the brand she endorsed. That brand became popular after she became their model and... Ah, it was a long time ago... I was very young then..." Rory could not help but smile seeing the pride on Bobby’s face.

But then her smile vanished as she remembered the other thing.

She had Scarlett’s picture from a magazine in her drawer because she liked the make-up on her. She used to recreate that style very often.

That was until... Until the day that idiot Liam found that picture.

’It’s Scar!’ he wriggled his brows naughtily. ’I have her picture too,’ he said. And the next day when he visited him, he showed her the "picture" he talked about.

Wearing sexy lingerie and fishnet stockings with pencil stilettos, Scarlett was posing on a sofa in a very British setting. The entire mood was so... It was the cover of a "men’s magazine", and it was designed in a way horny men won’t miss that edition.

And the reason a teenager would have a said "picture" under his mattress... She didn’t have to guess.

She hit him that day and called him "gross", but thinking back, she had a feeling that Liam did not show her that to make her uncomfortable. He probably wanted to make her jealous.

Oh, Liam...

Rory watched as the car drove inside the woods. And what seemed like a path not suitable for cars, Bobby drove very carefully following the map on his phone.

"We have to walk from here," he said, and Rory got down. "It’s not very far from here," Bobby added.

"OK," Rory nodded. She didn’t mind walking. She is half-safe and is almost out of town. All she wanted was to safely get to LA.

She carried Ellie and Bobby, the gentleman, insisted on carrying her luggage. They walked for five minutes, and they came to this very small airstrip that could only handle very small planes. And there was already a small aircraft standing there.

It was surprising that no one knows about this in the entire town. Rory was surprised.

She didn’t mind that. But her heart pounded as she does not have the cash to spare. She wondered if Bobby forgot about it. She was about to ask Bobby for the money not minding her awkwardness but then she saw a familiar figure getting down from the plane.

He? Really? Is he the company Bobby talked about?
