Chapter 146: Hopes And Despair

Rory went upstairs with two slices of the cake Penny baked. It was her usual duty to pass snacks to Lennon and Sidney as no one else would. Those two didn’t get down for dinner.

She knocked on Lennon’s door. Lennon opened the door and Rory saw Sidney was sitting on the bed. With his pressed lips and knitted brows, Lennon looked like he was suppressing his feelings.

They are still at it?

"Hey, Rory. What is it?" Sidney asked.

The curtains were closed and in the dim light Rory could not see Sidney’s expression, but she sounded nasal.

"Nothing! Just came by to... Aunt Penny baked her famous cinnamon coffee cake. I know you love it, Uncle," She passed one plate to Lennon and stepped inside the room without any hesitation.

"And for you too, Sidney. Indulge," She smiled. Sidney got the plate with a forced smile.

Rory walked to the window and flung open the curtains and opened the window. "Ah, this room gets the best evening breeze!"

With an uplifting smile, she looked at the both of them. It was blatantly obvious that the two of them were not fine and a piece of cake and little fresh air is not going to solve anything.

But it will help at least a little! And sometimes a little help is all that is needed.

There was an awkward atmosphere in the room. Rory could sense that she was not wanted in the room. She was not planning to stay for longer. But she wanted to say something.

"There’s... I heard some things from..." She shrugged not wanting to name-call Derick. "I am not sure what’s going on between you guys, but... communicate...Please..." She walked to Lennon and held his hand. It was cold.

"Uncle, please try.... Please..." She looked at him pleadingly.

Lennon avoided eye contact with her and looked at the window. Rory gripped his hand tighter. "Please," she said once more.

Lennon let out a deep sigh and turned to look at her. It was hard for him to agree to her request, but he nodded and placed his hand over her hand.

"Great!" Rory’s face broke into a smile as she got what she needed. But she turned to her side feeling Sidney’s glare at her. She stared back at Sidney and Sidney broke eye contact and bowed her head.

"Have a great night, guys!" Rory shouted with glee and with a skip in her steps left the room. She closed the door out of courtesy and went to her room.

She has to pack.

She didn’t plan on packing much. She has a majority of her things back in LA. All she needed were Ellie’s essentials. And that didn’t take long for her to pack.

She lay on the bed and closed her eyes. She went through the plans she had in her mind once more. She hoped everything works as she predicted. Because otherwise, lives will be lost.

But she had a feeling that if there is even a slight danger to her life, her grandma’s people will come to her aid. She had a feeling that her grandma is having her under watch. And some of her plans depend on it.

Fizzy... I’m coming!

Imagining the panic on Derick’s face when he learns that she left the town in the dead of the night, she couldn’t help her smile.

And the unexpected happened. She fell asleep.

Liam glared at the agent in front of him sitting with his legs crossed. He had a cup of hot coffee in his hand and was devouring a croissant.

"Want some?" he asked without even a slight bit of emotion on his face.

Liam gritted his teeth. He’s been shouting to this guy for hours that he wants to talk to his wife. But he was not listening. He even begged him to have someone inform her that she might be in danger. But he had no reply.

Liam feared to say that name aloud in here. Because he knew what these "agents" will do if he mentions that name. They are birds of the same feather. They will fly together, and no one will help him.

Liam didn’t know what to do.

Something... he has to do anything to send a message to Rory. But he couldn’t think of any.

He could only regret letting that guy go. The signs were all there but he was...

Ugh! I’m stupid! And now I am going to lose my wife! What can I do?

"You must love your wife very much," the agent said.

Liam glared at him. He’s been here for this long and he didn’t even tell him his name. He knew this interrogation is not legal. They are keeping him here and they are going to make him confess to the crimes he never committed.

"Aurora... Nice name!" the agent shrugged.

"Keep her name out of your mouth, fig!" Liam said gritting his teeth.

He should not get angry here. It is not going to do him any favors. But after the stress he was under, his cognitive abilities were not up to par. Also, it’s ingrained in him to defend Rory and it is not very hard for him to get angry.

"Fig?" the agent raised his brows with a smirk dancing on his lips.

"Yes, I gave you the name of an ugly fruit. Do you like it?" Liam smiled. "It rhymes with pig."

The smirk on the agent’s face vanished. Cops don’t like to be called pigs. But then he started laughing.

"I like it, Fitzwilliam... This animated you... Now, let’s talk, shall we?" he leaned on the table. "Once you answer all my questions, you can talk to your wife. How is that for a deal?" he asked.

Liam gulped. He wanted to talk to her. But he was not willing to trust this guy.

"What do you want to know?" He asked.

"Hmm..." the agent flipped the pages of the file. "When you were questioned after the Laura Brown missing report was filed, all you talked to the officer was about divorce. And to my knowledge, you have canceled your divorce application. Tell me, what is the reason?"

The agent sat comfortably leaning on his chair.
