Chapter 145: Forgotten Memory

That night, Rory went to dinner as always. She read the paper Bobby passed to her using his men. She needs to leave home at midnight. As much as she was excited and scared if she could pull off the escape.

Her mind was with Liam all the while. It would be early morning where he is. She wondered if he slept well.

Everyone was talking about the bodies they found in the woods. Apparently, they found almost two dozen bodies in that cave. Investigations are conducted to figure out who those bodies were.

Frank was telling them how the talk of the town was that they were all the stashes of the "mad Roberts" and the bodies are all the missing persons from the town.

Rory sighed. Mad Roberts was Frank’s granduncle. He was schizophrenic and the town called him "mad Roberts". He never hurt anyone, but the townsfolk weren’t forgiving him for the frequent "episodes" he had accusing everyone of a Russian spy. He ran away from home when he was in his twenties. And from then on, the townsfolk accused "mad Roberts" for any disappearance happening in the town.

He would be a hundred years old now if he survived this long. Rory did not think that he would have the strength to kill at his age.

The bodies will reveal the truth, won’t they? They sure will.

In the interrogation room, Liam didn’t even know what day or time that is. He was kept in a room with no natural light. Interrogators were coming in a going out as they please.

They offered him food once and after that they never brought up food. It made him wonder if it is not dinner time yet, but a lot of time had passed.

They wanted him to answer questions. But he refused to answer any question without the presence of his lawyer. It is his constitutional right and he knew it will go wrong if he says something that he is not supposed to say.

He was not worried that they are not offering him food. He did not feel hungry. He was sleepy, however. He asked if a bed would be provided considering that he is a prisoner now, but the cop did not answer him.

Whenever he fell asleep on the table, the door would open with a bang waking him up. He thought it was not intentional for some time. But as it went on for a long time, he could figure out that they are doing it intentionally.

They are torturing him mentally and breaking his will.

As he realized that, his resolution to not say a word only strengthened. If they are waiting for him to confess, it would be better if he says nothing. If he does not eat anything for a day or two, he will faint, and then they will have to take him to a hospital. He can get the help that way.

Oh, Sweet Cherry... If only I left with you that day...

He sighed. If only he stayed home with his pregnant wife (although they did not know she was pregnant then), everything would have been different.

Resting his head on the table, he closed his eyes. His neck and back hurt a lot after sitting on the chair for a very long time. They refused to loosen his chains and he couldn’t even stretch his arms and legs.

He was jet-lagged, the last meal he had was the dinner he had with his family, he couldn’t even use the restroom, he wanted to sleep but is not allowed to...

He wanted to cry.

As usual, he heard the door banging open as he just fell asleep. He wanted to look up, but he was too tired to look up. He heard the sound of someone walking in and with a loud thump he placed a thick file on the table.

Liam was startled, but he could not move even a bit. Even rolling his eyes seemed like a tedious task. But he tried to look at the one who entered the room.

As he tried to look, he was reminded of a similar situation he encountered a long time ago.

The week he was hiding in Rory’s room, he slept on her bed when there was light because Rory was on the lookout for anyone around. But at night, he slept under the bed. Rory gave him the fluffiest duvet she had to have as a mattress as she didn’t have a spare one.

She never had friends over for sleepovers.

It was in those days Rory talked to him in detail about the nightmares she has. He witnessed her grunting and sweating one night. Her eyes were open, and it appeared that she knew he was near, and yet she was afraid of something standing in the corner of her room.

He talked to her and slowly she came out of the night-terror. If he didn’t see her that night, he wouldn’t have known how serious of an issue that is for her. She was shivering and stiff, and she was terrified of something.

But another incident happened that he almost forgot until now. It was the night before Rory’s grandmother found out that he was hiding in her bedroom.

That night, like other nights, he was sleeping under the bed. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, he woke up. He didn’t know what prompted him to wake up, but as if someone awakened him, he woke up and he couldn’t fall asleep.

He wanted to knock under the bed to check if Rory was awake, but he didn’t want to disturb her sleep. After seeing her sleep paralysis, he was afraid for her. He hoped she sleeps well.

And as he lay under her bed, unable to fall asleep, he saw a shadow on the carpet. He also heard a small scuffling noise near her window as if he was checking if the windows are left unlocked.

There was a person standing by her window.

Liam did not get scared. All his thoughts were on Rory. She was afraid of something she cannot see at night. He knew that she would die out of terror if she saw someone standing by her window.

He slowly scooted over and using the darkness under the bed as a cover, he took a peek. He saw a very familiar silhouette.

The silhouette of...

How did I even forget that?

He is still stalking her! That other day too!

Liam sprung his head up.

"Cherry... My wife... She is in danger! Please, I want to talk to her..." He started to beg.
