Chapter 144: Watching Over
Chapter 144: Watching Over
Rory’s eyes met with Sidney’s and her eyes widened. She was about to say something, but the door opened then. Lennon looked calm as he opened the door.
Rory realized that she is staring when Lennon smiled at her. With a nod, she walked back inside the room. Her heart pounded against her chest cavity. After composing herself, she walked out.
She needed to talk to Derick.
When she got to the kitchen, she saw that Aunt Penny was baking a cake. Claire and Julia tried to be helpful, but Penny wanted to do it by herself. Rory joined them.
"Where is Derick, Aunt Penny?" she asked.
"No idea! Julia, do you know?" Penny asked Julia.
Julia shrugged. "He’s been busy with his phone ever since he returned," she said.
And the topic changed to the health of Dorothy and Rory assured them about her health.
"Claire, didn’t grandpa have a stroke too?" Rory asked.
And that somehow made all the ladies uncomfortable. Rory bowed her head. That was not her intention.
"Uncle’s not home yet?" Rory asked Claire, and she shook her head.
"He was talking about meeting a lawyer to discuss Liam’s case..." she sighed.
Rory nodded. Everyone’s doing their best to help Liam. And she will too. The first step is for her to leave the town. She didn’t want everyone to suffer because of her presence.
"Have an eye on Sidney whenever you can, please, Claire, Julia..." Rory asked both of them.
"You too," Claire patted Rory’s hand. She looked very sympathetic over Sidney.
Rory nodded. She would leave this house tonight and she would keep an eye on Sidney until then.
Julia looked at the both of them and she looked a little indifferent. She seemed to not care for Sidney. Rory noticed it and Claire noticed it too. Claire, the meek one, didn’t ask Julia the reason even when she was curious.
"What do you know, Julia?" Rory asked unable to hold back.
"What?" Julia shrugged and tried to get away. Derick told her that Sidney was cheating but she didn’t know if it was her place to tell the family.
Aunt Penny who was folding the cake batter left it on the counter and walked to the dining table out of curiosity. She could sense that something was going on between the couple. Trying to jump from the window is a serious issue.
"Well..." Julia couldn’t run away as her future mother-in-law is interested in the topic too. She was uncomfortable speaking about it but seeing the curious eyes of the ladies of the family, she let out a sigh.
"She was cheating on Lennon, apparently!"
Everyone gasped out of surprise. And they found Rory’s question weird.
"Is that what he said?" Rory asked.
Rory didn’t understand why everyone is looking at her weirdly. "I meant Uncle Lennon," she said trying to clarify. She thought they are thinking that Julia heard it from Derick.
But they were still looking at her weirdly.
"I don’t think she cheated," Aunt Penny said and walked to the kitchen.
Claire shrugged as she is someone who won’t talk badly about anyone. Rory could not understand her stance on this issue.
But she probably won’t believe Lennon’s words either.
"But..." Julia tried to correct her future mother-in-law. "Derick heard Sidney talking to her... the guy she was cheating with!"
Penny stopped for a moment and turned to look at Julia. She then shook her head with a sigh. "Who cares!" she said and resumed her cooking.
Julia looked at the lack of empathy for Lennon on their faces. She could only sigh seeing the deep hate they have for Lennon and his family. They really won’t care even if he is dead, it seems.
Isn’t this a bit extreme?
She looked at Rory. Derick had told her that Rory and Liam are the only ones close to Lennon. Rory shrugged.
"It is how it is!"
"What is what..." Derick entered the room having listened to only the last part of the conversation.
"Your fiancée was telling us that you saw Sidney cheating," Rory stood up. She wanted to use the bathroom.
"No! I did not say that he saw," Julia shook her head out of panic and looked at Derick. She did not want Derick to misunderstand. "I told her that~"
Derick stopped her and kissed her cheek. He knew his woman wouldn’t be the one embellishing a story. It would be this nasty little bugger he loves.
"I want to talk to you," he said, and Rory shrugged.
"Where?" she asked.
"To the porch," he said and Rory followed him.
It was then her phone rang and Rory picked it up from the couch. "Ah, how did you get here?" she pretended that she forgot she left her phone on the couch.
"It’s my old friend," she said covering the screen. After glaring at Derick as if he was a pest, she walked out first.
Derick gritted his teeth. As if he couldn’t find out what they were talking if she hides it from him! His lips curved to a smirk as he heard the angry-sounding voice from the other end of the call. This little idiot must have tried something and Ian, smartly refused to help her.
This is better.
Rory saw the smirk on Derick’s face and was glad that her plans are working. Ian is shouting at her and telling her that she is stepping out of bounds and told her not to call him again, and whatnot.
And now, the one listening to my calls will know that I don’t have Ian’s support either.
But I do! Secretly!
"What did you want to talk to me about?" Rory asked.
"What were you two talking about?" Derick asked. He couldn’t even hide his smile.
Rory glared at him and pretended to walk inside. Derick stopped her.
"Liam’s case... The lead investigator is paid by Allison’s family. They are convinced that Liam is the killer. So..."
"They will do whatever it takes and prove that he is the killer. They will do anything to make sure Liam confesses, is that right? IS that why they froze my accounts? To intimidate them? Was the text Allison received from me even true?" Rory asked.
"Listen, Rory..." Derick held her hand. "It is not as bad as it looks. I told you this because it is better you don’t leave this town. This town is your safe haven. As much as people hate you here, they won’t let anyone hurt you."
"Okay," Rory agreed.
Derick looked surprised. "You are listening to me?" he asked.
"Yeah. You know how your agency works, right?" Rory looked at him without blinking her eyes.
Derick was not sure about what she was thinking.
"You, keep an eye on Sidney, in return," she said with a smirk.
She knew he won’t do that. She knew that right now Derick hates Sidney the most in this world. She just wanted to annoy him.
"Ha ha... Very funny..." Derick shouted as she walked away. "I will be watching your every movement, Rory," he shouted.
Rory waved her hand and walked away.
