Chapter 142: Keeping Secrets

Dorothy wanted to speak more but Rory softly patted her hand asking her to calm down. They are in a dire state where they cannot reveal what they are thinking. It would be better if that person thinks that she is a fool who didn’t figure out all the clues that were laid out in front of her for a long time.

I’ll pretend to be a fool for a couple more days... And in the end, I will make sure you get dragged by the cops, handcuffed and humiliated, just like you made my Liam get dragged!

Rory vowed in her heart.

Rory talked about Ellie, effectively turning Dorothy’s attention elsewhere. Derick excused himself and went out. Rory looked at her phone and smirked.

She was pretty sure that her phone was hacked. And who knows? Allison did receive a text from her phone number for the meet-up. Allison might have thought it was from her, but it was from someone else--the killer.

And who knows? Her phone still might be getting hacked. And he might be listening to what she is speaking through the microphone of her phone. She was pretty sure that that person is not going to leave her alone after everything.

Why does he hate us this much? We never hurt him, did we? To kill people just to frame Liam and hurt me... What did we do to deserve all of this?

Whatever it is, he is a psychopath. He cannot be reasoned with.

Rory knew that the best way to put him off is to pretend that she didn’t figure him out. He thinks he is smart and that no one has figured him out. She will give him what he wants. She will make him revel in his smartness.

She cannot afford to give him any reason to doubt her.

A lot of people are depending on it.

After talking for some time, Dorothy’s medicines took effect and she fell asleep. Rory informed the nurse to take care of her and left the room. She couldn’t find Derick anywhere.

And she was relieved.

She walked around the hallways and found the restroom. She needs to buy a phone. Her phone is of no use. When she saw a guy with a plaid shirt following her into the bathroom, she smiled.

The guy passed her a paper. Rory got it and thanked him. Bobby told her that he will pass her the information on how to leave the town tonight. This must be their guy. She recognized the wolf tattoo on his arm.

"A burner phone, please," she passed him the money. Stealing twenty-dollar notes from her grandmother did come in handy. With a nod, the guy walked out.

He even gave the impression of a drunk accidentally entering the women’s toilet and got out of the room apologizing. Rory stood in front of the mirror hugging Ellie.

She waited in the restroom for the guy to bring her the phone. She has to make a phone call urgently. She stood by the window and watched as the guy passed the money to someone else carefully as if he was stumbling and the other guy walked to the store on the other side of the road.

Rory’s doubts were cleared. These "lumberjacks" who are here officially to cut trees are not actually lumberjacks. They are much more than that. And she was sure that they are not working for their grandmother. Because her grandmother is not going to help her.

Or maybe... is she?

Bobby is staying in her grandmother’s home and the way her grandmother is trying to keep her away... There is more to it.

Her grandmother always hated her. That’s what she made her believe. That’s what she made everyone else believe. But that might not have been the case. She never hated her when she was alone.

Her grandmother didn’t shower her with love when they were alone, but she never hurled hate-filled words when they were alone.

She always "hated" her when there are other people around.

Rory placed her hand on her chest as she felt something weird in her heart.

Maybe grandma hid her love for me... But why?

Her thoughts were disturbed by a knock at the door.

"Rory, are you in?" Derick asked from the outside.

Rory rolled her eyes. "Coming!" she shouted. She washed her hands and dried it before leaving to give the impression of using the restroom. She took a look around, but she could not see the guy who will give her the burner phone.

"Derick, give me some money. Ellie needs a new pacifier. I’ll get it from the store there," she pointed at the store the guy went in.

Derick looked at her funny. It was odd for her to ask him for money. She never asks him for money. She hates it when he spends money on her at times. And money for a pacifier when she has a phone?

"Rory, is there a problem with your account?" he asked. She wouldn’t ask him for money otherwise.

"You don’t know?" Rory curled her lips. "Your beloved agency froze all my bank accounts, and they are not letting Liam’s lawyer inside the interrogation room. Right now, my husband is going through God knows what, but yeah... Let’s worry more for the millions the billionaire is losing..."

Rory’s voice was filled with scorn and Derick was lost for words.

"Do you have $5 I can borrow? Or I will ask someone else in the store," Rory didn’t wait for Derick’s reply and walked towards the store.

The cops followed her to stop the reporters from getting to her and covering her baby from the sun, she ran into the convenience store. She knew the cops cannot stop the reporters from getting inside the store and she cannot interact with anyone if the cops were wiht her.

But as she was crossing the door, the guy who went inside the store with the money, got out with a burner phone in his hand. He had long disposed of the packaging and had just the phone. As he walked past her, he slipped the phone to her hand and Rory kept it safe with her daughter’s belongings.

"Get inside the car. I’ll get the pacifier," Derick stopped her.

"And a teether too. She is teething..."

Derick blinked. "What’s that?"

Rory rolled her eyes. "Ask someone."

She walked back to the car. His son might have grown up, but did he forget everything?
