Chapter 141: Trying To Explain
Chapter 141: Trying To Explain
The rest of the drive was silent. Derick seriously contemplated if he should call his colleagues to check why the reporters were under the impression that Rory is involved in whatever they are accusing Liam of doing.
And it still hasn’t settled in his mind that Liam is not Frank’s son. His father was not as surprised as he was. But their aunt was pretty sure of that. He was not sure of it, but he heard them arguing one day.
If so, who is Liam’s father?
This is all so overwhelming!
He received a text from Julia. He read it. She had asked that the caterer had called about any last-minute alterations to the arranged menu for the wedding. He sighed.
He told Julia that they cannot postpone the wedding but honestly, he couldn’t even think about his wedding. They planned for everything even until a week back, but now it all seemed like a distant dream. And he couldn’t think about the color of the stupid flowers or the seating arrangements.
Does he want to get married to Julia? Yes, of course.
But now? Not so much.
Maybe Julia was right that the timing is not good.
He decided to talk to her about it and think of their next steps.
While he was in his deep thoughts, they had already arrived at the hospital. He stopped the car at the parking lot, and he could see there were reporters surrounding the hospital. He heard Rory sighing loudly.
If he was just this saddened by everything happening around him, he could only imagine what Rory is going through. Julia kept on saying to be patient and caring with Rory because she has a child to look after. She said a little mistake will cost her baby, although he didn’t think there are low chances for that the more, he observes Rory.
She has a good hold of her emotions these days.
She said that she slept, and she looked like she ate something. She is taking care of herself and is not doing anything stupid like trying to leave the town. That is good.
That being said...
"Rory," Derick held her hand as she was about to alight from the car.
Rory turned and looked at Derick with her eyebrows knitted.
"Those pictures... You have to know that I had nothing to do with it," he said. His throat went dry, and he coughed. He would die if Rory thought that he took those pictures.
Rory pressed her lips. Twisting her wrist, she got her hand free of his grip. Unlocking her seatbelt, she opened the door.
"Rory," Derick called. His voice shook. "Please..." he was not planning on it, but his voice shook.
"And that didn’t stop you from keeping it with you and..." she clenched her jaws and her cheeks flinched out of anger. Her eyes squinted out of anger. "... thoroughly going through each and every picture... Did you enjoy it, Cousin?"
She asked and banged shut the door. She walked to the back and opened the back door to get Ellie.
Derick was frozen out of shock. Ellie’s babbles brought him back.
"Rory, what the h*ll are you~"
"Until yesterday, Derick..." Rory interjected him. She pointed her finger at him. Her reddened eyes let out the tears of anger she kept inside. "Until yesterday, I was under the impression that only Liam knew the color of my nipples. But you... even before he..."
She wiped her face with her sleeves. Picking up Ellie, she banged closed the door, and walked inside the hospital. By then the hospital security had done a pretty good job at stopping the reporters from getting to her and she ran inside.
After getting the room numbers of her grandmother and Dorothy she decided to meet her grandmother first.
But she was interrupted by Mrs. Delport first.
Apparently, the visiting hours were over, and Mrs. Delport wanted her to leave. Rory tried to reason with Mrs. Delport that she just wants to take a look at her grandmother from the distance and maybe have her grandmother have a look at Ellie. She truly believed that her grandmother would benefit from meeting Ellie.
Whether she agrees or not, Rory knew that her grandmother loved Ellie more than anything.
But Mrs. Delport was not listening to Rory and insisted for Rory’s leave. And their back and forth attracted some nurses. One of the nurses who looked kind asked Rory to go visit her grandmother. She said that she understood Rory’s situation and why she couldn’t visit for hours. And that she can visit her grandmother now.
But Mrs. Delport adamantly refused, stating that her grandmother does not want to be disturbed now.
Even the nurses got angry on Rory’s behalf. They talked amongst themselves that Mrs. Delport is too much by stopping a granddaughter from meeting her grandmother.
As they were discussing, the call button was pressed from her grandmother’s room and a nurse ran to her room. The door was slightly ajar, and Rory could hear her grandmother’s voice from inside.
"I don’t want to talk to anyone. That one always brings misfortune. Ask her to leave. I don’t want to meet her now! Lina! Get in!"
Agnes shouted and then she started coughing.
Rory clutched her baby close to her chest and pulled back the tears that were raring to get out. As if she didn’t have enough to be sad about, she didn’t want to bother with her grandmother’s words.
But it did hurt.
And even though Rory found solace, her grandmother didn’t lose much of her mind after this stroke. She still hates her.
Or maybe she will never get over her hate for her. Maybe Agnes Roberts’ entire being is her hate for Rory.
She smiled wryly.
"I knew she hated her granddaughter but isn’t this too much...?"
Rory heard one of the nurses whispering to another.
"Yeah...But it’s Agnes we are talking about. She’s always a bit...Eh..." The other nurse whispered back.
"But who knows why she hates her that much?"
"It’s not the poor girl’s fault that her parents died in an accident, dummy... Agnes cannot still show her anger to that poor child..."
Rory walked past the gossiping nurses pretending that she didn’t hear them.
"Rory!" she heard Derick’s voice behind her and walked faster. She thought that he would have left her and returned. But even after what she said he bothers to follow her.
She didn’t know what to think of that.
"You walked past your grandmother’s room. She’s..." he blocked her. He stopped seeing her reddened eyes.
"You visited her?" Rory asked. She felt betrayed that Derick knew her grandmother’s room for some reason.
"Yeah, with my dad...we..." Derick stopped as he saw Rory’s tears increase.
Don’t tell me Agnes didn’t want to see her granddaughter...
"Grandma was waiting to meet you. This way..." Derick led the way.
So, what if that stoic woman does not want to meet Rory? It’s her loss! Rory has another old lady who is eager to meet her. Rory does not need that stone-faced woman.
He held the door open for Rory to enter. His lips curved to a smile seeing Dorothy stretching her hands for Rory.
Yeah, Rory! You have others who love you!
And as he was about to close the door, he saw someone hiding in the corner with a phone in his ear. He thought it was one of their undercover agents.
Without closing the door fully, he took a peek. The guy came out from hiding after a couple of minutes and when his eyes met with Derick’s he made a run for it.
"I think I was made!"
Derick heard him say.
He was sure he is still working with the agency, and he has met him in another case. He is one of the agency’s best undercover agents.
What is he doing here? Who is he spying on? Why did he reveal himself to me? Was it deliberate? Or did he screw up?
Maybe he did not expect me here?
Derick closed the door pretending that he did not find him out. Leaning on the door, he messaged his contacts in the agency. He asked some generic questions about Liam’s case, something that won’t compromise his position.
He might not look much like it, but he is smart in getting the truth out of people. He knew how to talk to different people when he needs it.
Rory sat by Dorothy’s side and held her hand. "I am glad you are okay, grandma," she smiled. Dorothy held out her hand to touch Ellie and Rory placed her on the bed near Dorothy for her to take a closer look.
Dorothy’s wrinkled and tired face broke out into a bright smile. But soon after, her face turned serious. Her breathing was not regular yet and she was wearing an oxygen concentration mask and she couldn’t speak. Rory stopped Dorothy from taking it out.
She knew what Dorothy wants to talk about.
"Grandma, please don’t remove it..." she held her hands. "please don’t worry about anything and concentrate on getting better..."
She gave a side eye to Derick. Although he appeared that he was not listening, Rory did not want to talk about it in front of him.
Please, grandma, understand me... Don’t ask me about the will.
"I promise that I will make sure everyone is protected."
She really wanted to protect everyone in the Roberts family. They are her true family... She loves them.
