Chapter 140: First Impressions

Rory kept the will back in its place. She decided to pay a visit to the hospital. She has to meet her grandmother too whether she likes it or not.

She readied Ellie after she woke up and as she was about to step out, she saw Derick entering. Frank was out and so was his truck and Rory was glad she doesn’t have to call for a cab. She didn’t think any cab driver would be willing to risk it all and come pick her up.

The reporters were relentless as they wanted a word from her. Even when the ambulance was here, the police had to clear the way for the family to pass through without being troubled by the reporters.

Even now, Rory saw a police car escorting Derick’s car. She figured Uncle Leroy must have called in for the favor. He has the power to do so, and he is not involved in the case. He cannot be heckled.

But she will be heckled.

"Where are you off to?" Derick asked getting out of the car. He even forgot to open the door for his lady. But maybe Julia never expects his gentlemanly act, she got out of the car herself.

"To the hospital," Rory said expecting a roaring refusal by Derick.

"Get in!" He said surprising Rory.

He even turned at the cops and asked for them to wait.

Rory said nothing and fixed the car seat for Ellie and strapped her in. If he offers, why would she refuse him?

Julia hugged Rory. "It’s good that you are visiting. She regained consciousness and she was looking for you."

Leroy patted Rory’s head and both of them walked inside the house. Rory watched them get in. Derick honked the horn and Rory got inside.

"Did you figure out what grandma said?" he asked.

Rory looked at him for a moment. This is what he is thinking about all this time.

"No," she shrugged. "I fell asleep."

Derick hummed and turned the car. "Where is Uncle Frank?" She asked.

"He has to take care of his business, Rory. He cannot let his business bite the dust like Lennon’s business did..." Derick’s voice was salty and Rory rolled her eyes.

"Why is Uncle Lennon’s business biting the dust, Derick?" she asked.

Derick glared at her. "Why, I wonder!"

"Don’t put my husband on a pedestal, Derick," Rory scoffed. "You sure are not insinuating that Liam was the pillar who supported the entirety of LR Holdings, and his fall makes the empire crumble~"

"Oh, dream on!" Derick grunted. "You do not understand business at all. Getting profits are hard. But losses... they are... F*cktards!"

Derick mumbled the cuss word as a reporter banged on the window at Rory’s side. Rory’s first instinct was to have a look at Ellie.

She was looking around the cloud of darkness surrounding the car as the reporters swarmed around. With her eyes wide, her lips started to tremble.

"It’s okay, Ellie... Mommy’s here..." she extended her hand through the gap between the seats and patted her belly. She did not want her daughter to cry.

"Ms. Roberts, what do you think of your husband’s arrest?"

One male reporter asked patting the window. Rory’s face turned to all shades of red out of anger, but she didn’t want to turn to look at him. Because she knew then that picture would define her.

She didn’t want Liam to face trials. But if her plan does not work, he will have to. In that case, every little expression would be analyzed, and people would form the judgment even before the jury and the judge does.

For that, her first impression cannot be this angry woman who makes an enemy of the reporters and hurts them.

She squinted her eyes and cued her tears. It was not hard to get her eyes filled with tears. Her eyes were stinging because of her lack of sleep for some time.

"There are reports coming that you called Ms. Allison Stewert the day she went missing. Did you arrange the meeting between your husband and her?"

Another one asked.

What is that about? Rory was shocked. But her eyes never left her baby. Ellie was looking at her and as always, she started smiling seeing her mother.

"Ms. Roberts, did you know that Ms. Allison Stewert was pregnant with your husband’s baby?" Another one asked.

"Rory, calm down. Don’t answer them," Derick held her hand as she whipped her head to look at her window.

"What are your thoughts about the horrid death of Ms. Allison Stewart, Ms. Roberts?"

The reporters gathered around the car. The car couldn’t move forward as the cameramen were blocking the front of the car. The cop car was in the front and the cops got out to get the reporters under control, but two cops can never win against tens of story-hungry reporters. The car shook as the reporters pushed around to get a shot of Rory’s face and to ask her questions.

And without seeing her mother’s face, Ellie started to cry.

Aurora Roberts, in all her authenticity, will step down from the car and slap away the reporters for scaring her poor baby. She truly wanted to do that.

But she stopped herself from doing that. It cannot be the first impression she creates.

With tears dripping down her face, she pressed her palms together. "Please..." she spoke with a nasal voice. "Don’t scare the baby... I am visiting my sick grandmother and I will answer any questions you have, tomorrow... Please... get back... You’re scaring my baby..."

The reporters were not stepping back and she could hear the sound of the shutters going off. She knew her picture would be the first-page news in the local newspapers the next day. And she made sure that everyone gets pictures of her crying and pleading.

The cops finally were able to reason with the reporters and they gave way. And some were already on their way to the hospital because she told them that she would go to the hospital. Rory could not bear her daughter crying and got to the back seat through the gap between the seats.

She picked her up and patted her. "I’m sorry, Ellie... I’m sorry... You’re fine... Mommy’s here..."

She softly calmed her down. As the car started moving, Ellie calmed down. Nestling on Rory’s neck she fell asleep suckling her fingers.

"That was wise on your part," Derick said.

Now everyone will see her as this helpless mother, and a dutiful grandchild, who could do nothing as the reporters hounded the car and caused her baby to cry.

She invoked pity. And now there will be some who will end up supporting her. After all, hounding the wife of the accused is not a good look for journalism.

"And what is this about you calling that woman that day? Did you?" He asked.

"What? No! Where did that news come from?" Rory asked.

Derick said nothing more. But he knew that the reporters wouldn’t be asking her that question out of nowhere. There should be something there.

Are they trying to charge Rory?
