Chapter 139: The Will
"I’ll be fine after some rest, Uncle Lenny," Rory said looking at the door.
Lennon sighed. She looked pale and sick. Her eyes were red and at one glance anyone can say that she is unwell. But she is not asking for help. And without using words, she is asking him to leave.
"Yeah, but first, eat something. You are to take care of this little being there, and you need strength. Worrying would hurt you and in turn your baby. She needs you," Lennon raised his hands in a surrendering gesture seeing Rory’s expression turning hostile. "Just something to think about, alright?"
"Okay," Rory nodded.
She did not want to hear any advice on how to care for Ellie, but Lennon is right. Ellie is solely dependent on her for her nutrients and if she gets sick Ellie is the one who will get affected the most.
"Thanks, Uncle Lennon," she said softly.
Lennon nodded with a smile and walked out of the room. Rory got down from the bed and after checking that Ellie was asleep, she went to the kitchen. Claire was sitting at the dining table burying her face in her hands.
Rory let out a sigh. During her pregnancy, she is exposed to stress almost every day. And she is not the type to go out and take a break. She is a homely woman who would stand firm like a tall tree giving shade to the weary ones in the family.
Thank goodness Uncle Frank found a good woman!
"Ah, Rory!" Claire looked up hearing the footsteps. "Are you hungry? Let me~"
"No," Rory patted her shoulder. "I’ll help myself."
Claire stood up. "I refrigerated the leftovers. You can~"
"I know how to reheat it in the microwave," Rory interjected with a fake angry look.
With a smile, Claire took a seat. "Are you okay, Rory?" she asked after watching her for some time.
"Eh!" Rory shrugged. "I should ask you the same, Claire. And you are pregnant."
"I am fine... Sure I am stressed, but..." she placed her hand on her belly. "I know whatever I saw won’t be of much help for you, Rory. But be strong. Don’t lose to the negative thoughts that darken your mind. The truth will triumph, always."
"I know..." Rory smiled. She agreed with Claire. The truth cannot be hidden. Just like the bodies that were hidden for a long are exposed, every truth will be out one day or another.
But she did not want "the" time to come. She wanted to fight to fast forward the truth. And she will. She already has enough idea who that person who might try and frame Liam might be. But unfortunately, her gut feeling won’t be accepted in court. She needs proof. For that, she needs to go to LA.
And she will.
And everyone is right. She needs to take care of herself first.
"Rory..." Claire spoke breaking the long silence. "Lennon... before, in your room... What were you discussing?"
Claire stuttered before even finishing the sentence and her hands were clasped together tightly over the table. Rory could see that she was forcing herself to talk to her about this topic.
"Nothing much. He was telling me to take care of myself too," Rory chuckled. "Guess, I do look terrible like Derick said."
"Right!" Claire wetted her lips. She then opened her mouth to say something but then decided not to. "Finish it all," She pointed at Rory’s plate. She got to the refrigerator and took a sip of water.
She contemplated deeply about her last encounter with Lennon. She wanted to step inside Rory’s room to have a closer look, but her hair stood on edge seeing Lennon’s glare at her. She couldn’t explain but it was creepy, more of a feeling signaling danger.
She wanted to talk to Rory about it. But she feared that Rory might not take it well. Rory does not let anyone trash talk Lennon to her. Only Dorothy was the exception. "Just be careful around him, Rory. There’s a reason mom~"
"Claire... Thank you for everything." Rory smiled. It was not a pleasing smile but more of a warning smile.
Claire saw that Rory is stopping her from continuing and with an awkward nod, she left the kitchen.
Rory bowed her head and finished her lunch. After that, she washed the few dishes left in the kitchen sink and walked to Dorothy’s room.
She has yet to figure out what Dorothy meant. Or if she really meant the will.
Sitting on Dorothy’s bed, she looked around the room. And there it was... in her vanity...
A lion lamp.
Is this what she meant?
Rory walked out of the room to check if there are anyone outside. The entire place was calm and there was no movement inside the house. Outside the house, however, the sound of police sirens was increasing by the hour. It seems like a lot of cops are assigned to this particular task.
Ugh! They will want to talk to me about it, right? But I have to be with Liam!
Rory decided to tackle that problem when she comes to that bridge. She walked to the vanity and picked up the lamp with a bronze lion as the base. She knew the story behind that lamp. Apparently, it was the eighth-anniversary gift Grandpa Roberts gave Grandma Roberts. She loved it and hence it occupied a place in her vanity.
And another secret grandma claimed that only Rory knows is... the lion is hollow inside. And that means...
Rory picked up the lamp. It felt heavy as it is bronze and did not appear to be hollow. Rory observed it closely for any lines or imperfections. And, she finally figured something out.
She twisted the base and it screwed loose. And the circular base was so heavy that it compensated for the hollowness of the rest.
Rory looked inside the hollow part and there she found it...
A notarized paper, neatly folded and stored with care.
The Will!
Rory wondered for a second if she is allowed to read such a private document that belongs to the Roberts family. Technically she is not even related to the Roberts family because her husband is not a Roberts.
But...
Grandma told me! She wanted me to read it!
Rory took in a deep breath and opened the paper. She was in for more of a surprise. And it was not grandma’s will as she expected it to be. It was Grandpa Roberts’ will.
As she read it, her lips curved to a smirk.
Wow! Just wow!
