Chapter 138: What Grandma Meant
Rory was in the kitchen trying to contact Julia. When she came back, Julia was leaving for the hospital to give lunch to Leroy and Derick. Seeing the box in her hand, Julia offered to take her dress to the dry cleaners to get it cleaned.
Rory was calling to check Dorothy’s condition.
Apparently, Dorothy was doing better but she was not awake yet. She was still kept under sedation and the doctors had assured them that the prognosis was good; that Dorothy will return home pretty soon.
Rory was relieved.
"Eat," Claire placed a plate in front of Rory and Rory stood up rubbing her stomach.
"I think I will skip lunch today. I’m not feeling well..."
"Rory!" Claire called for Rory, but she ran up the stairs.
"Not hungry!"
Rory ran to her room and locked the door. It was hard for her to hide her feelings. She could not trust anyone in the house. Everyone in the house appeared to be not worrying about Liam. It was like they don’t even remember Liam. No one is asking her about him.
But it is understandable. They all think that the expensive lawyer they hired will help Liam. And with the elder in the family in the hospital, Liam is not important.
Liam is not important...
Her heart felt a crushing pain. She didn’t know what Liam is going through. If they are not letting the lawyer in which is against the constitution, what else will they do to him?
Oh, Liam... Please hold on... I am coming... I’ll find a way to talk to you. I want to look at your face. I already miss you!
Ellie was sleeping deeply after the little outing. She won’t wake up for another hour or two. And Rory wondered what grandma Roberts wanted to tell her.
Everyone was there, and Grandma Roberts said what she said only when she saw her. And Rory saw fear in her eyes. She probably was in a lot of pain and thought that she might die.
What would a person who thinks they are dying do try to speak? And why to me, especially?
Rory remembered the last conversation she had with Dorothy. She was talking about Lennon. Or was she?
We...lie... la...
Those are what Rory heard. Dorothy was slurring and she didn’t even know if that is what she meant to say.
Rory leaned on the wall and closing her eyes, tried to figure out what those words mean.
A name? Or was it the deluded rambling of an old lady who just had a stroke and it meant nothing? And stroke... didn’t Grandpa Roberts die of complications from stroke too? Is it something in the water? Why is everyone getting stroke?
But the panic in Dorothy’s eyes...
Rory closed her eyes and went back to that moment. She was already having a lot of things in her mind, and she didn’t know how good her memory was at that time. But still... she pushed through.
Everyone... what were they doing? Where were they standing? Why did Dorothy avoid everyone else?
And Rory’s mind went to the last conversation she had with Dorothy. Dorothy must have learned that Liam was not Frank’s son that day. And rather than talking about that revelation, she wanted to talk about Lennon.
Lennon? Or was she talking about Grandpa Roberts? And something else?
If they were not interrupted by the "suicide attempt" by Sidney, she would have heard the whole story from Dorothy.
We...
Was Dorothy talking about unity? Being together as a family? But no... She wouldn’t have changed her mind about Lennon.
So...
We...
What will I talk about if I think I am going to die?
Rory tried to think about that. She couldn’t think well as she was tired. But that’s probably how Dororthy would have felt too.
If it was her, tired, and thinking that she is going to die, what will she say?
She probably would want Ellie by her side, and she would tell her that she loves her and that she is well taken care of...
Wait... We... Did she mean her "will"?
And why did she tell me that? I don’t know where she keeps her will. Or do I?
Rory pinched the area between her eyebrows and got back through every conversation she ever had with Dorothy. No one usually listens to her stories and so Rory would be the only one listening at times.
What did she tell me at those times?
Lie...la...
What does that mean?
Rory fell asleep unconsciously as she was in deep thoughts. She might think that she does not need sleep, but her body will know best. And her body and brain needed rest.
And in her sleep, she had a dream.
In the dream, she was sitting as she was when she fell asleep. Her heart was beating very slow, and her head was throbbing with pain. With her fingers, she gently kneaded her forehead to be able to cope with the headache.
*Bang*
The loud noise of the door banging open startled her, and she looked at the door with her fingers still on her forehead.
Suddenly everything turned dark.
The hallway was dark, the room was dark, and the figure that was standing by the door...was darker.
It was the same figure she sees in her nightmare with its reddened eyes and baring teeth. Its hand was still holding the knob. Rory could not move even an inch and her chest heaved as she was scared. She tried to scream for help, but no voice came out.
And in that darkness, she saw the dark figure gliding towards her.
She shuddered in fright and her eyes widened. Her clothes stuck to her skin due to the cold sweat.
Please, help! Liam!
Through her mind, she called for his help. She knew he won’t be near her to help her. But she had no one else she could call for. It was always the case. She has no one to depend on.
She is an orphan!
"Rory!"
"Rory, wake up!"
"Rory, are you alright?"
She heard the panicked voice of Lennon and woke up. She flinched and out of reflex pushed away Lennon. She didn’t expect Lennon in her room.
"I’m sorry!" Lennon stepped back seeing her reaction. "I didn’t mean to frighten you. I was out in the hallway and I heard your distressed moaning and got inside... I didn’t mean to~"
"It’s fine... I’m...sorry for my reaction...’ Rory tried to smile but her head throbbed so much and she grunted.
"Are you okay? Do you... Should I call for a doctor?" Lennon asked.
"No... I’m fine... yeah..." she wetted her parched lips with her tongue. "I’m fine..."
Lennon poured her a glass of water. Rory drank it.
"Is everything okay?" Claire peeked in from the hallway. Lennon turned and looked at Claire.
"Ah, yeah... Just a bad dream..." Rory smiled.
"Oh?" Claire smiled awkwardly patting the wall. She put a step in.
"I’m fine." Rory said.
Claire retreated the foot she placed inside Rory’s room and walked away without speaking more.
