Chapter 137: A Way to Him
"Bodies?" Rory asked. "As in many bodies?"
Bobby nodded.
Rory couldn’t believe what she was hearing. All those times there were rumors that there are many bodies buried in the woods but for that to be true...
"He... Gollum... he attacked us. We escaped him and now... he has his head chopped. Who could have done it? It must have been in the past few days. We saw that creature and..." Rory thought out loud.
Bobby said nothing and stayed silent. He didn’t want to tell her that they found what appeared to be human tissue among the ruins. He didn’t know for sure. but it sure looked like a neatly done fillet of human flesh.
Rory did not want to think about it more. Her head throbbed with pain. She wanted a change of thought. She walked to her room. She came here with a plan. She must find a way to get to Liam.
When she opened the door, she felt a chill passing through her spine as she remembered the photographs. She turned all the lights on and only when she ensured that she was alone inside that room did she feel some relief. Her fingertips were still trembling.
Her eyes ended up at the closet and she took in a deep breath and walked there. Holding the torch of her phone, she looked around. Only the box that contained her wedding dress was left in the closet.
Her heart pounded.
She took a look at her dress just days ago. She was nervous then but for a different reason. She was bombarded with memories of the past then. But now, she was terrified.
She feared something might have happened to her dress.
With shaking hands, she brought the box to the bed. Pressing her lips, she stared at the box. It would be better if I don’t know the condition of the dress, she thought for a moment.
But closing her eyes, she opened the lid. Gathering her courage, she opened her eyes. Her dress was inside just the way she had left it. Her knees went jelly-like, and she knelt unable to stand straight.
After composing herself, she stood up. She traced her hand over the dress and the little ruffles at the hem of the dress. The lace was so pretty still. She wondered if she maintained the dress properly, Ellie might get married in the same dress. That would mean that three generations getting married in the same dress.
Thinking about Ellie, her fear vanished. She picked up the dress and took a good look. Through the lace, she saw some discoloration and she checked the inner silk lining.
There’s a stain!
She took a good look at the stain to figure out what it was. It was orangish, like sauce and it only made her wonder how the stain got there. Deciding to send her dress to the wash, she packed it in the box.
"Ah, almost forgot why I came here..."
Rory ran to the vanity and picked up all the jewelry in the drawer. She is not a big fan of wearing jewels and her grandmother asked her to leave her jewels at home when she left for university. She didn’t take it back after that.
But now is the time she has to use it.
Her eyes watered a bit seeing the diamond necklace that belonged to her mother. She vowed to keep it safe and give it to Ellie. And now...
It’s okay... I’ll get it back!
She kissed the necklace.
Chin up, Rory! Your mother is not living in this necklace. Your mother is in your heart. You don’t need this necklace...
She told herself to compose herself. Placing all the jewelry in a bag, she walked out of the room with the box.
"What’s that?" Bobby asked seeing the big box.
"Ah, it’s my wedding dress. I found a stain and..." Rory placed the box on the coffee table and knelt in front of Bobby. Ellie was playing with Bobby, and he thought she was trying to get Ellie and passed her to Rory.
Rory shook her head and opened the bag and showed Bobby the jewelry. "I want your help, Bobby. Please... These are my jewelry and I want you to sell it and..."
"Whoa, wait..." Bobby pushed the bag to Rory and shook his head.
"I know... At least, can you give me a ride to the town? The reporters... I can’t get past them and... They froze my accounts and I need money. I also need a flight ticket to LA and... Some cash for spending... If possible, I would beg for your help in smuggling me to the airport without getting noticed by the reporters... YOu guys have a lot of trucks, and the reporters won’t bother to check them for me. So, please...." Rory added seeing Bobby staring at her.
He was perplexed.
"Is this even your jewelry, pony?" he asked. "You stole money from the kitchen, and I find it hard to believe you..."
"Well, you are right to doubt me," Rory sighed. "But trust me. These are my mother’s jewelry. I swear!"
Rory’s fingers unknowingly caressed the diamond necklace. Bobby looked at Rory and let out a sigh.
"Where’s your mother?" he asked.
"Dead," Rory said.
"Look, pony..." Bobby patted her head. "All you want is some cash to spend, and you want to get to LA unnoticed, is that right?" he asked.
"Yes. That is right." Rory smiled as she could see the change in Bobby’s expression. He looked like he had decided to help her.
She closed the bag and passed it to Bobby. Bobby covered her hands with his hands and pushed the bag to her.
"Keep it," he said. "I’ll talk to you after I’ve arranged everything."
Rory did not like that Bobby is not accepting the jewelry. She did not want him to spend his money without any surety. "You can have it, Bobby. Maybe pawn them so I can buy them back once my accounts are unfrozen..."
"No," Bobby refused. "If they are your dead mother’s, you should not be pawning them or selling them. Keep them... For your daughter," he paused Ellie to her. "I can help you without these..."
"Thank you..." Rory smiled. She couldn’t see Bobby’s smile clearly as her eyes were clouded. "I will surely return your money."
"Yeah, you can," Bobby hugged her.
After exchanging phone numbers, Rory went back to Liam’s family home. As she looked at the road, she saw that the media presence has dwindled considerably. Rory figured that they all would be in the forest with the cops gathering information about the cave they found there.
Today would be the best day for her to get to her husband.
