Chapter 136: Found In The Forest

Rory got to her grandmother’s house expecting Bobby to be there. She needs to ask him a favor. Although she didn’t know if he would help her, she decided to ask.

It’s a long stretch that someone she barely knows would help her with such an enormous thing, but right now, she had no choice.

She got inside the fence and walked to the chicken coop. The night security guard would be there with the others in the mornings.

"Is Bobby home?" she asked.

"No, missy. He said he’d be back late today," he replied.

"Okay..." Rory was disappointed, but she didn’t want to return yet.

Ellie moaned and acted fuzzy and Rory checked the baby. She was uncomfortable because of all the wrappings around her.

"Aww... Let’s get it all out..." Rory walked inside the house removing the hood on her head. Ellie did not like the sun on her either. Her skin immediately turned red.

Rory ran inside the house. Only after getting everything off her did Ellie return to normal. "You feel good now, aren’t you, little baldy..." Rory ruffled the very little thin baby hair on her daughter’s head.

Ellie laughed and as her legs were free of socks, she held her foot with her hand and put it in her mouth. And when she couldn’t hold that leg anymore, she tried it with her other leg. And succeeded.

How amazing, and how carefree this little being is!

Rory felt a little jealous. But she was once a baby and her parents kept her with no worries. She had to mature a lot in just a night and she wished Ellie doesn’t have to face that.

She must maintain the childhood innocence of her daughter as much as she can.

Because one day, she will have to grow up. She will become an adult and she will have plenty to worry about whether she likes it or not. She needs to have the mental fortitude to handle all that. A happy childhood always helps in building mental fortitude.

"What was that!" Rory stood up. Carrying Ellie, she walked to the door. She saw the police cars rushing into the forest with sirens blaring.

Her heart leaped wondering if something bad happened to the workers in the woods. But no ambulance followed the police cars, and that made her curious.

She saw a truck entering the house and she saw Bobby was seemingly disturbed. She didn’t know that man but she could say that he is not a weak-hearted man. She had a feeling that he’s seen some stuff that would make some faint.

But right now, he was shaken.

"So that’s your baby!"

Bobby took a look at Rory standing on the front porch and seeing Ellie his smile brightened. Ellie does have the magic to turn anyone’s frown upside down into a smile.

"Yeah, I promised I’d bring her to meet you!" Rory said.

"Good!" Bobby walked to her and he pointed at Ellie. "May I?"

"Yeah, here," Rory passed Ellie to Bobby. Holding her to his eye level, Bobby smiled and talked softly to Ellie making her laugh. "Oh, she’s a darling!" Bobby held her close to his chest.

"She is... She just started to recognize faces... " Rory smiled. The way Bobby held Ellie was so casual and showed that he is used to carrying babies.

"And soon, she will have a favorite person and will stick to them like glue... My Cia, she likes Jerry better..." Bobby chuckled.

"Hmm..." Rory agreed. She hoped Liam would be there when Rory is starting that phase. She had a feeling that Ellie would be such a daddy’s girl.

"What was that about?" she pointed at the road. "I saw police cars rushing..."

"Oh, that’s just something we found..." Bobby’s smile reduced a bit and he scratched his ear. He was uncomfortable talking about it.

"Those woods... there are stories, you know..." Rory understood that Bobby or his men saw something "supernatural" or plain weird.

"What kind of stories?" Bobby asked.

"Many kinds... Stories of ghosts, stories of evil spirits, stories of insane people wandering, stories of a mad Roberts hiding corpses... Or probably a Gollum...?" Rory added as she could see that Bobby was reacting to her. Usually, people would just dismiss any story about the woods as superstition. But it appeared that Bobby was affected. He believed her.

Did he see that creature? Is it still alive even after we hit him that much? And my ring!

"I lost my ring there recently," Rory said. "My engagement ring," she showed him her ring finger. "It was his mother’s ring. She’s dead and... It was important to him and I lost it in there. And something... some creature was having it. I told the cops and they..."

"They don’t believe you, don’t they, Pony?" Bobby looked at her. "They don’t like the Roberts?"

"Yeah," Rory shrugged. "You can’t blame them entirely though. We were... pretty wild, if put mildly..." She smiled awkwardly.

"I get it," Bobby chucked. "A small town. What else would a red-haired pony do other than prancing around pranking? Where’s the entertainment? Oh, you’re so much like my Kitty..."

He mumbled the last part softly and walked inside the house. Rory walked inside.

"So, what did you find?" Rory asked.

"What else did you do? The cops I spoke to... More than getting to that deep forest, they were more annoyed that you were right." Bobby asked.

"Nothing... I just burned a girl’s hair..." Rory shrugged. "And, I might have scared a boy off with a bow and an arrow... And..."

Bobby laughed holding his stomach. "You really were a wild child!"

"You’re not going to call me a sociopath?" Rory asked. She has never met someone who would just laugh with amusement when what she did is known.

"Sociopath?" Bobby couldn’t hold back his laughter. "Why did you..? Why did you burn her hair?"

"She bullied me. I gave her warnings and still she..."

"See... that’s self-defense! And the boy... Did you like him?"

"Yeah, but he thought that I was..."

"Well, screw what he thought!" Bobby patted her back.

Rory sat in silence beside Bobby for some time. She felt included and she felt like she is not a very terrible person.

"Do you want juice or... something stronger? I bet my grandma keeps her best wines in the cellar in the basement!" Rory said breaking the silence.

"No...But you want to know what we found, right?" Bobby said pulling out his phone from his pocket.

"Yes," Rory nodded.

"We were working near a rocky terrain. That place was elevated and it appeared to be just rocks and caves when... A tree fell and the uprooted roots exposed something... Gollum, you said... Was he something like this..?" Bobby turned his phone at her.

"Now see," Bobby covered the screen. "This is terrible to~"

Before he finished, Rory got the phone from his hand. And her hands trembled seeing the image on the screen.

"It’s him... the Gollum the one who stole my ring...He’s half-burnt..."

Her hands shook.

"And there was a cave underneath...Filled with bodies..." Bobby said.
