Chapter 120: Unconvinced

"Are you going to tell me what happened there?" Liam asked after they got in their room.

She was still shaking.

"Come on, sit...I’ll get you a glass of wine," he said and turned to leave. He was very angry. He wanted to go to Mrs. Delport and shout at her for putting Rory in danger.

If she cannot walk around her grandmother’s home without fearing getting shot from booby traps, why should they even stay here? They can leave!

"No, don’t leave..." Rory grabbed his hand.

She knew he would go and take out his anger on Mrs. Delport. She did not want a fight to happen in the middle of the night.

He sat beside her. And she leaned on his shoulder. Liam kissed her cheek and held her hands. He waited for her to speak up and in the meantime, his anger reduced. He got so sleepy, that he almost fell asleep.

"The file was there, Fizzy..." she said after a long silence.

"What file?" Liam asked wiping the drool at the corner of his lips.

"The file Uncle Lenny brought. It was inside grandma’s safe..."

"Okay..."

"The gun went off, Fizzy...What is she protecting in that safe?"

"Hmm..."

Liam didn’t know either.

"Maybe something important... regarding the national security or something..." Liam added.

"Seriously?" Rory rolled her eyes. "Why would your uncle give it to my grandma then?"

"What do you think it is?"

"I don’t know either...It could be related to your case or something... What if it is something that could exonerate you?" Rory asked.

"Then why would they hide it?" Liam asked. He was sleepy and it took a while for him to realize that she is insinuating that his family and her grandmother are trying to put him behind bars.

"Cherry, what is going on?" he asked, blinking away his grogginess. "Why are you doubting your grandmother?"

Speaking of doubting family members, he should talk to Derick about the "stalker" he mentioned.

"You know what..." Rory took in a deep breath. She didn’t feel that it is right.

Her grandmother wouldn’t go that far, right? And why would she do that? She’s already sick... but is she?

"Do you think my grandmother is sick? She seems fine though," she asked.

Liam raised his brows and looked at her weirdly. He was definitely judging her and she averted her eyes. It does sound rather cruel when she voiced her thoughts.

"I think I’ll take the wine..." she stood up.

She felt like she is going crazy. She didn’t know what to do. She is very stressed and she needs to take care of herself.

Liam watched her leave and sighed. She never was this insecure and confused. He stood up and followed her silently. He didn’t want her to enter her grandmother’s office again.

When he walked down the hallways, he saw her standing by the office. He gently placed his hand on her shoulder and she almost jumped in fright.

"Shh... It is me..." Liam whispered.

Rory looked at him and patted her chest. Her eyes focused on the window of the office once more.

"Do you want me to go and check the safe for you?" Liam asked.

If she wants to see the contents of the safe, he can do that for her. He did not want her to risk her life again.

"No...no..." Rory turned and placed her hands on Liam’s shoulder. "Don’t go in there. It’s dangerous. But..."

She looked inside. "I think I saw someone there, Fizzy... outside the window..." she scratched her head.

"You did?" Liam stepped inside the room.

"No, don’t" Rory stopped him. "I am not sure..."

Liam looked through the window. The blinds were on and there were only small gaps between the flaps. Rory couldn’t have seen anything clearly.

But he decided to check the security footage in the morning. And he needs to have a word with that arrogant woman. What is she going to achieve by hurting Rory?

Rory had a couple of glasses of wine and Liam waited with her. They went back to the room. Mrs. Delport saw them walking away from the kitchen and was relieved they didn’t get inside the office. She now needs a new place to hide those pictures.

-----

In the morning, Liam woke up early. He looked at Rory and she was fast asleep. After they got back to their room, Ellie was fuzzy and Rory asked him to sleep and took care of her. She would have slept late. He didn’t want to disturb her.

He got to the kitchen and as he expected, Mrs. Delport was there. She was already preparing fresh juice for Agnes.

"What was that about?" He asked.

Mrs. Delport didn’t answer him and got on with her business.

"So, it is your family tradition to kill your own?" he asked.

There still was silence.

"She saw someone by the window yesterday too. I want to review the footage," he said.

That stirred Mrs. Delport a little. "I’ll take a look," she said and without turning back, she walked to Agnes’ room.

Liam sat at the breakfast table running his fingers through his hair. The stocks for his company are falling freely. He didn’t have any hopes that he could save his company. If this continues, he will have to declare bankruptcy.

As if his financial troubles are not enough, every business magazine that had him on the front page removed his image from there. They all give various reasons. They didn’t say anything slanderous that might help him sue them. They were very careful with their words.

He was losing sponsors, there was an online campaign against his company and he could see that his reputation is on the floor.

He feared looking at his phone these days.

But a call arrived from Jake and he answered.

"I am called for interrogation by the feds," Jake said. "I think it might be regarding the knife you gave me to fix."

"And how would they know about my knife getting damaged?" Liam let out a wry snort.

Only Jake knows about that other than him.

Jake did not answer him.

"Do you think I damaged it when I murdered Allison?" Liam asked.

Jake did not answer.

"It’s fine, Jake. Do what you gotta do. We don’t know each other that well," Liam said dryly.

As he was about to end the call, Jake spoke. "I never told you this before but I am a diagnosed psychopath."

"And?" Liam asked.

It was not that surprising for me. Although Jake pretended to care for others most times he actually didn’t.

But if he is diagnosed as a psychopath, that would mean that...

"Were you in trouble with the law before, Jake?" Liam asked.

"I..." Jake hesitated. "I killed my stepfather..."

"...Oh?" Liam struggled to get his voice out.

He didn’t think that Jake is someone who did that.

"...when I was thirteen..." Jake added. "And I completed my studies in the juvenile detention center."

"I bet he deserved it..." Liam said.

"Umm, not really, no..." Jake’s voice was casual. "I just had the urge to...you know...and I acted on it..."

Liam gulped. What does he mean? If he is the psychopath who kills because he had an urge, could it be Jake who is murdering those women?

"I bet you understand my situation here, Liam. Don’t take it the wrong way. I’ll talk to you later...or never!"

*Beep*

The call ended.

Liam’s hands trembled in fear. He could not believe the conversation with Jake did happen. With his trembling hands, he scrolled through his phone to find out if the call with Jake got recorded.

"Ah, sh*t!"

Liam threw the phone on the table as he realized that it was not recorded. He used to record every call he has but he changed the settings just days back when he was in the mood to "mess with" Rory.

He didn’t change the setting back.

"Stupid son of a bi-" Liam grunted.

"You don’t look good," Mrs. Delport said. "Are you sick?"

"Jake... Jake said he was the killer..." Liam said.

Mrs. Delport raised her brows. "He killed those women? And he told you that?"

"Yes..." Liam gulped and shook his head. "Um, no! Not exactly, but... He told me that he is a psychopath and he has killed in the past... for no reason at all... He was in jail... Well, in young people’s jail, but... You get it, right?"

With his eyes wide, he looked at Mrs. Delport. Mrs. Delport did not look very impressed with him. With a scoff, she walked to the kitchen.

"Why aren’t you saying anything?" Liam asked, walking to her.

"Oh, don’t stand close to me," Mrs. Delport pushed him back. "I don’t want your stupidity to rub on me."

"What?" Liam furrowed his brows.

Mrs. Delport looked at him like she was pitying him. And it angered him more.

He was about to raise his voice when she spoke first. "You never think, don’t you?" she snorted. "If he is a felon, he has a record. And that means he would be under constant surveillance. If he was diagnosed with psychopathy, he will have a psychiatrist he would be seeing to keep check on his mental state. And he would have been suspected right from the start. But he wasn’t, right?"

"But he is framing me!" Liam shouted. "He could have..."

Mrs. Delport still wasn’t convinced and that made Liam think.

"You know, don’t you?"
