Chapter 119: An Unfortunate Incident

Rory’s heart started to pound as she stood by the office door. She has lived in this house for a long time but she has never stepped inside her grandmother’s office. She would go inside her grandfather’s office all the time. He never minded.

But Mrs. Delport would always stop her from entering that room.

As she was reminded of that faithful assistant of her grandmother, Rory ran to Mrs. Delport’s room. The door was slightly ajar and she was sleeping.

Rory stepped inside the room. She always imagined that red danger lights would blink along with blaring loud sirens if she steps inside her grandmother’s room.

Or there could even be booby traps!

She placed each step carefully like a cat, fearing she might trigger something. And she safely reached the table. There was nothing on the table except for some photo frames. Her grandmother did not have a computer at home as far as Rory remembered.

As she expected, the only drawer in the table was locked.

After being in the room for some minutes without any incident, Rory got a bit more brave. She sat in that old leather chair and sat comfortably with her arms resting on the arm rest.

Where would grandma keep the key?

She looked around. She didn’t think that her grandma would have taken the key with her. Her grandfather always said that she leaves her work at her office. He’d joke that his wife becomes an entirely different person once she enters that room.

So her grandma should keep the keys inside the room.

Her eyes ended up on the pictures in the frames. One was that of her grandfather when he was almost Liam’s age.

Damn! Grandpa was a hunk!

Rory thought. Behind that picture was their wedding picture. Rory should agree that her grandma was very beautiful by any standards. With her bob and bright red lipstick, and those beautiful winged eyeliners...

Wow! No wonder grandma was adored by grandpa! She’s hot!

At the other side of the table was a picture of her dad. Rory picked the frame. "Hey, dad..." she wiped the picture. She placed the frame back after kissing her dad.

"I miss you so much..."

There was another frame behind. And she picked it up. It was her wedding picture they took with her grandparents. She recalled the moment that picture was taken and she smiled.

It was a good memory.

Her grandfather was all smiles because he just did what he always wanted to do. Liam looked awkward and a bit scared because he just got threatened by her grandfather. Rory was grinning because Liam got threatened, and her grandma...

Is that tears by the corners of her eyes? Is she emotional? Am I seeing wrong?

Rory had a copy of this picture in her wedding album and she never saw her grandmother’s expression as being emotional. She saw it as stoic. But after she watched her with Ellie for the past few days, she saw a new side to her grandmother.

She let out a deep breath and placed the frame back.

There is no picture of mom...

Rory had the feeling that her grandmother blamed her mother for her father’s decision to not return to his home even for a visit. Her grandpa was not open with her but she just thought that might be the case.

Her father would say that his mother would hate his choice. That was the reason he always gave whenever her mother brought up visiting his parents at least once.

But they never got the chance to return here.

Leaning on the chair, as she thought about her grandmother, she did feel a little pity for her. SHe missed a lot in her life and she is partly to blame. She is old and sick and the one person who loved her for who she is not here anymore.

She would be lonely.

She let out a sigh and stood up. She looked around everywhere for the key, but she could not find it. She even checked inside the big books that were there, tried to move the busts on the shelves, moved the candle sticks and even knocked on the wall to see if there would be any secret hiding places. As she was knocking around the room, she saw the big artwork behind her grandma’s chair.

Would there be a safe behind that artwork?

She wondered. She pressed her lips and looked around. That painting looked like it hasn’t been moved for a long time. But she lifted it up just to clear her doubts.

And there it was... A safe!

"How original!" she mumbled.

She pressed her lips seeing the combination lock. It looked like it would need six digits to unlock. It was pure guessing on her part. But she figured that her grandmother would have used the lock that is much safer.

Now what could be the combination?

She looked at the lock and then her eyes ended up on the table. If the items on the table reflects Agnes Roberts’ heart...

Her heart is filled with her husband.

And that opened the gates for a flood of questions. Would she have set the day they met as the password? Or was it their wedding anniversary? Or, could it be her someone’s birthday? Or...

She suddenly got an idea and she turned the knob.

*click*

The door to the safe unlocked. She smiled. She knew her grandma’s passcode would be something related to her grandfather and yet it should be secret enough for no one else to figure it out.

Her grandfather had two birthdays. One was his actual date of birth and the another one in his certificate. Only a handful of people knew her grandfather’s true birthday.

With a smile, she grabbed the door and swung it open.

"NO!"

Rory heard the shout of Mrs. Delport and the next moment she felt a strong hold around her waist and she was thrown on the floor.

That was followed by a loud bang. Bang as in a shotgun going off bang.

Rory, patting her elbows and knees that hurt, looked up. One of the busts was smoking and she saw the wall under the safe... the spot where her shadow was falling because she was there...There was a hole... in the wall.

If she was standing there, her heart would have gotten blown out of her chest cavity.

"What the hell, Mrs. Delport?" she shouted.

Her heart was pounding. She didn’t think that she was this close to death. And there really was booby traps in her grandmother’s office!

She was mad! She could have died!

"Language, little miss," Mrs. Delport stood up. "Where are your manners? You cannot sneak into someone else’s office at night, Miss Roberts."

Her voice was stern.

Rory bowed her head. "I am sorry," she said, out of habit. She knows not to talk back to Mrs. Delport.

"Go to bed," Mrs. Delport said and helped Rory up.

Rory saw the hole on the wall and a chill passed through her spine. She almost died.

"What happened? What’s that sound?"

Liam walked in. Rory went and hugged him. She was shaking.

"What is it? Cherry...Babe..." he rubbed her back and kissed her face to warm her up. She was cold to touch.

He looked around. The open safe, the hole in the wall, the slightly damaged bust that was still smoking... And Rory is shaking.

"Was someone else here, Cherry?" he asked. His eyes became sharp as he glared at Mrs. Delport.

Who booby traps their home even against their own family members?

"It was just me... The shotgun went off..." Rory’s voice was shaking.

"It’s okay, baby... It’s okay... I am here now..." he patted her back and assured her.

"Let’s talk about this in the morning," Mrs. Delport said and tried to get them out of the room.

"Oh, you f*ckers really are~"

"Fitzwilliam Roberts!" Mrs. Delport interjected him. "We will talk about it in the morning!"

Liam could not accept it. He so wanted to bash that old woman for daring to scare his little wife. BUt he felt the slight pull of his collar.

"What is it?" he asked Rory.

"Let’s go to our room..." Rory said. She did not want to cause a fuzz in the middle of the night.

Also, she was in the wrong! She did not think that her life would be in actual danger in her grandmother’s room. But she should have expected it.

And the file was there... Whatever file uncle Leroy gave, it was so important that her grandmother found it necessary to hide it under maximus security.

What is in that file?

Mrs. Delport went straight to Agnes’ room hearing the ring.

"Was it her?" Agnes asked.

"Maam... It..."

"I told you to take the security down when she is staying!" YOu know how she is!" Agnes reaised her voice.

"I am sorry, maam... I thought I did. I don’t know how I missed. But... I am sorry..."

"Was she hurt?"

"NO... Just the wall..."

"Did she get it?"

"No, but I think she noticed it inside the safe."

"How long?" Agnes asked.

Mrs. Delport was not sure and she looked at her with her surprise.

"The code?" Agnes asked and Mrs. Delport nodded understanding what Agnes meant.

"In just one attempt, maam... She knew."

Agnes laid on the bed with her back to Mrs. Delport. She did not let her see her smile. "Hide that file." She ordered.
