Chapter 118: The Developement

Chapter 118: The Developement

Rory kicked the rock on the ground as she ended the call with Liam. He was as confused as she was when she said that her grandmother wants him to not meet with the cops and stay with her.

He was not convinced even when she told him that uncle Leroy agreed with her. But then he agreed. He listens to her grandmother even when it does not make sense. Maybe that’s why her grandmother likes him better than her.

-----

"I don’t want to talk to you anymore," Agnes waved her hand.

Leroy stood up with a smile. "Then I won’t overstay my welcome. Please take care of your health," he said and walked out of the room.

He wanted to tell her that he takes back what he said earlier. But he didn’t.

Leroy could not control his grin as he stepped out. Rory came to him running.

"Uncle, won’t the cops get mad if he avoids them? What if they try and~"

Leroy placed his big rough hand on her head. Remembering what Agnes said happened to Rory, his smile disappeared. He pulled her into a hug. "No such thing will happen, dear child... We are all here... We won’t let anyone hurt you..."

"But, Uncle! Liam still needs to answer the cops. Won’t it cause a problem?" Rory wanted to be more clear about it.

"No," Leroy said.

It was a lie. When Liam doesn’t answer the summons of the cops and hides in Agnes Robert’s home, it would enrage those cops. And they will want him charged.

But Agnes must have planned for this. She would know what to expect. Even if she is not how she used to be, she is still the sharpest tool in the shed.

And the break-in... It must be one of Agnes’ plans. Because now, Liam’s apartment is compromised. Whatever evidence they might find in his apartment, it would be easily arguable that someone else put it in; that the break-in was done by the one who tries to frame Liam.

It would be hard to convict Liam and would be much harder to convict him.

Unless... Liam does not get tangled in something else new.

Even so...

Leroy looked at Agnes’ window. The blinds were on. He couldn’t understand why Agnes kept silent even when something bad happened to Rory.

It could be...

Was she waiting for him to get caught in something more serious?

It only confirmed his doubts that the one trying to frame the members of the Roberts’ family is the true killer.

But if it is not a Roberts, who could that be? Someone who has access to the Roberts’ home and knows all the details of everyone... Who could that be?

And Agnes let that killer loose after hurting Rory, and he went on a murdering spree. And still, Agnes is patient. How many innocent lives were lost when she waited?

Agnes not caring about the lives of others is not news. She never cares-- that is her legacy. Her uncaring attitude is what propelled her up the ladder.

But even she can’t keep herself from showing her love for Rory, right? She is a sweet child.

-----

"Lina, is he right? Would the child still remember that night?" Agnes asked. She looked defeated.

"No, ma’am. She does not remember. We tried with psychiatrists and psychologists. Aurora does not remember. Sometimes, the human brain just forgets to protect. That was what that renowned doctor said, right? And even if she remembered, we would have known. You know how she is... She won’t keep anything to herself. She’d..."

Mrs. Delport tried to assure Agnes. Agnes agreed reluctantly.

"He should pay for what he has done, Lina. Ensure our plan forwards smoothly," Agnes said after a long time.

"But do you really want to talk to ’him’?" Mrs. Delport asked.

She despised that man who always wanted to get inside her pants even though he knew she was married. He even tried to kill her husband so he would have a chance with her. It was not some divine love or anything. It was just lust and a game for him.

He wanted Agnes under him just once so that he could be assured that he is a powerful man.

Agnes avoided him. She was very smart about it. And she protected her husband from him plenty of times. She despised him would be an understatement. She tried really hard to kill him but he always escaped.

But Agnes stopped trying because he thought that Agnes was playing his game and that she wants him just as much as he wants her.

Time passed and he would still contact Agnes and tease her. Her beauty has waned and he would no longer be able to "perform" as he once could, but he still says he wants her.

Even Mrs. Delport was surprised when Agnes wanted to contact him on her own volition. Maybe because he knows that Agnes needs his help, he is acting all busy. Or he probably is busy destroying some family. Who knows?

Agnes looked contemplative. But then she took in a deep breath. "Send a message. Tell him that I talked about him as the greatest man I have ever known... He will answer your call immediately."

"Okay," Mrs. Delport nodded.

That man need not be contacted. They can handle the situation themselves. But Agnes must want to make sure that Rory will not get hurt.

"But not when she is here. I just want to have a good time before I..." Agnes let out a sigh.

She knows her future and how she is going to die. Her mental cognisance will deteriorate and she will die unable to discern what is going around her. BUt she wanted to cram as much as good memories in her brain before she loses them all.

And her granddaughter and the little angel will help her with that.

-----

A couple of days passed. Liam received calls from the cops and the agents. THey talked to the lawyer. He accepted their case and he was sure that they will win.

Within hours, he confirmed that Liam is suspect number one and they have a lot of reasons to believe that. He asked them to hold tight until the cops could gather more evidences that might hurt Liam or exonerate him. He said that it won’t be wise to talk to them without knowing what kind of evidences they might have.

He also said that it was a good decision on LIam’s part not to leave for LA. He said that the cops taking care of the break-in case were in constant contact with the agents of the Allison Stewart murder case and Laura Brown murder case.

He was sure LIam wouldn’t have left the interrogation room had he went there. When he said that the agents would have made Liam confess to those crimes one way or another, Rory almost cried.

She knew this would happen. But living through it was very difficult.

That day she sat in the living room and was watching her grandmother saying something to LIam. He was sitting by her side laughing and making her laugh. Ellie was with Liam and she joined her father in somehow entertaining the iron lady.

She does not look sick at all!

Rory thought. Everything looked a bit arranged for her. Liam would have gone to talk to the cops and he probably will still be in the interrogation room or worse... he would have been charged with god knows what crime.

What does she know?

And the lawyer said that the break-in wouldn’t have happened at a better time. Liam asked Jake to give a cursory check around his home. Nothing seemed to be missing. And Liam couldn’t say if anything was misplaced.

He was not lying when he said that he didn’t feel like home in that place and he had no attraction to the places there. THe cops were stunned hearing the answers Liam gave. Jake did not have any idea what was or wasn’t in his house either.

The lawyer said that this could be their advantage. He had proof that some federal agents entered and left Liam’s apartment premises as if they were taking a look about the break-in case.

THey cannot do that.

The lawyer said that they can now argue that the agents placed those "evidences" or whatever they found in his home.

But Rory wondered if it would work out. The agents cannot use those evidences they get from their home, but they can use those clues to find out other legitimate evidences.

BUt her grandmother must know something.

She should leave it. Her grandmother was never the woman who was open withe her heart. She will never tell her what she wants to know.

WHat if she tries to send Liam to prison?

Rory did not know why she thought that. But what if the one framing Liam was her grandmother?

That night, after everyone fell asleep, she got up from the bed. Liam was sleeping after having a long day. Ellie was sleeping and she slowly walked down the stairs and got to her grandmother’s office.

She remembered Uncle Leroy bringing a brown envelope when he came here, but he left without it. And they even had a fight. She wanted to know what it was.

Her heart pounded as she entered the office.
