Chapter 115: The Break-In

Chapter 115: The Break-In

Liam’s hand tightened around Rory’s hand as he spoke further.

"What happened? Are they asking you there?" Rory asked the moment he ended the call.

"My apartment was robbed last night. The neighbor complained after seeing the open door and..." Liam scratched his head.

He was terrified. Already he was pretty sure that someone is trying to frame him for murders, and now his house was broken in.

Who did that?

"Don’t you have a security system? Why weren’t you alerted?" Rory asked.

She did not know what might be happening here.

Liam shook his head. "I have a security system. It should have alerted me and the cops if there was a break-in. But there were no alerts. Those who broke in must be professionals. I don’t know, Cherry... I don’t know what is going on anymore... I don’t know what was taken, or what was put in..."

"It’s okay, Fizzy... We can figure it out. You’ll have to go there now, right? I’ll go with you and we can then go meet the lawyer Uncle Leroy mentioned. We’ll have to face it all, Fizzy... It’s..."

She tried to console him and she couldn’t as she felt overwhelmed with fear.

"You don’t have to come with me," Liam held her hand. "I can handle it alone."

"Oh, I am going, " Rory was not giving up.

"But the baby! Think about the baby! If you go with me now, how can you make the travel back in a week to attend Derick’s wedding?" Liam asked.

Rory went silent. She cannot keep on traveling like this when she has Ellie.

Liam started the car and they got home. Liam asked Rory not to talk to them about the break in his house. And they pretended that everything is fine in front of others.

Liam got Ellie and went upstairs to their room. He told Rory that he needs to pack for his travel. Rory did not find letting him travel a good idea.

Julia, Derick, and others helped in putting away the groceries. Derick was talking to someone and Rory could see

"She was pregnant," Derick said. "Around 4 to 5 weeks. She probably didn’t even know. And the baby is not where it was supposed to be..."

Rory felt a squeeze in her heart. It would be interpreted as the father of the baby killing Allison to ensure no one finds out that she was pregnant.

"Do you believe Liam, Rory?" Derick asked. "It does not look well for him if I am being honest. And they took me off the case. Although they did not tell me why I bet in the report it is going to be written as "conflict of interest" because my cousin is a suspect in this case."

"Derick!" Julia pulled his sleeves to stop him from talking, but Derick stopped only after he finished saying what he wanted to say.

"I know, Derick. I know what it looks like. But tell me... Is Liam a person who could do all these..? His motive... He asked me for a divorce. I signed it although I was the one who wanted him back. Why would he kill Allison if he made her pregnant? And that too this early stages of pregnancy? He could have forced her to terminate the pregnancy or seek other options, right?"

Derick nodded. Nothing made any sense for him too. There was no reason for Liam to kill Allison even if...

"Wait! There is a motive!" His detective brain could find a reason. "He wanted to get back with you. You are a better choice than that woman. You wanted him back. Allison’s pregnancy would have been a~"

"But he met the divorce lawyer when he went there the last time. He was planning on proceeding with the divorce. I talked to his divorce lawyer and he asked me to contact him through my lawyer," Rory said.

"Who else did he meet on that trip? Why did he want to divorce you? Why did he change his mind? Why didnt he correct the assumption that Allison was his girlfriend?" Derick kept on stacking the questions.

Rory wetted her lips. She knew the answers to those questions will lead back to Laura Brown’s murder.

"Will those questions lead to Laura Brown’s case, Rory?" Derick asked.

Rory looked at him. "I know he did not kill those women."

"Hmm," Derick nodded. "They will release the information. They won’t announce the suspect list per protocol, but the whole country is going to blame Liam. Brace for it, and keep your head low. You don’t want to deal with the media circus with a baby."

"Derick!" Julia was not impressed. He might be speaking out of care but he certainly is not presenting it as such.

Derick looked at Julia. And his eyes were sad. He does not like talking to Rory this way too.

"She needs to be prepared, Julia. Didn’t you like to post comments under the live trials you liked to watch? Didn’t you already form an opinion even before the charge was proven in court? There are going to be all sorts of people forming all sorts of opinions and the jury... She knows all that..." Derick looked at Rory.

"He cannot get charged, Derick. What can we do? There was a break-in... Someone broke into his apartment. Someone is trying to frame him... Is there someone we can talk to? Someone who would help us and keep a check on the agents to make sure they are conducting a fair~"

" You cannot bribe your way out of it, Rory," Derick understood what Rory means to say.

Rory sighed and sat in the chair. Julia sat beside her and held her hand.

Rory was thinking of bribing. She does have a good amount of money to spare. If she could get to someone who can stop Liam from getting charged, she won’t need that money for the lawyer, right?

Derick sat beside Rory. "Don’t try and do anything stupid, Rory. You don’t know how anything works. If you talk to someone wrong... It’s a crime, Rory. Hindering investigation, bribing government officials, and so on a so forth. It’s a long list of charges. And Rory, listen... Listen..." His voice turned serious.

Rory turned and looked at him with her reddened eyes.

"I am not saying that there aren’t corrupt officials who can help you. But..." His eyebrows furrowed and his grip on her hand tightened. "I am sorry to say this, but listen, it’s the truth. You know it too..." He clenched his jaws.

Rory’s eyes filled with tears.

"Not everyone wants money, Rory. Some...some scums want other favors... And you... Your beauty... It gives ideas..."

"That’s enough, Derick!" Julia hugged Rory and Rory started sobbing.

"I am not trying to hurt you, Rory. If anything, find a way to manipulate the media. They are going to be the biggest obstacle to overcome. These days, agents are forced to forgo basic procedures unable to bear the strain the media and the online warriors put them through... Time is a valuable resource and no one wants to wait these days for the truth..."

Derick stood up and patted Rory’s head.

"But don’t worry. You have all of us and our support. You don’t have to face anything alone. Stay calm, and we will handle this all the right way..." He kissed her head.

He walked to the kitchen, poured some water, and placed it on the table. Julia nodded at him and he left.

"Don’t mind him... He didn’t have to be this harsh..." Julia said with a frown.

"But he is right..." Rory wiped her face.

"Yeah, you have an entire family to support you." Julia was relieved to see Rory composing herself.

"I was talking about my beauty being a nuisance, " Rory winked.

"Yeah, that too..." Julia laughed along. "Man! You are very pretty..."

Rory sighed. She has heard it over and over agsin that she got numbed to it. And she has faced a lot of troubles because of it too.

But Liam was with her through it all and helped her. He was like a fence around her, protecting her from those who got near her with intentions.

And now, it is her chance to do the same for him.

She thanked Julia for supporting her and ran up the stairs.

"She looks fine..." Derick walked in from the patio.

"Do you always talk to her this way? Can’t you be a bit softer with her?" Julia curled her lips.

"Are you fighting with me for her?" Derick sat beside her and twisted her ear.

"Ow, owww!" Julia shouted in pain. "She is cute!"

"What a nuisance you are..." Derick pulled Julia into a hug. "I love you so much!"

"Do you think your cousin would have done it?" Julia asked leaning on his chest.

"Liam?" Derick thought for a moment. "The knife-work... He’s not that skilled, he does not have the patience of a psychopath, and he is not a psychopath."

Julia let out a sigh. "Then why did you even..."

Derick laughed.

But his face turned serious when Julia didn’t look at him.

Rory watched Liam pack. And at that time her phone rang.

It was an unknown number. She silenced her phone and threw it on the table. She did not want to spoil her mood.

But the phone kept on ringing.

"Wow, who might that be?"

Rory thought it might be an important call and answered it.
