Chapter 74: Traitor

Chapter 74: Traitor

Elys gritted her teeth as she and Aleksander turned on each other.

The warrior princess wasn’t entirely successful with her initial attack to the prince. As fast and precise as she was with any weapon in hand, the prince and his inherent vampire senses was far greater than hers that dodging the dagger was as easy as breathing.

It was only a matter of luck that Elys was even able to nick him on his right shoulder.

"Why are you doing this? You are attacking innocent lives!" Elys yelled as she jumped back when Aleksander swung his sword towards her.

Elys was puzzled with the prince’s sudden violent attacks. She knew he was evil in his own way, but she had always thought the prince was too much of an arrogant man.

He didn’t even lift a finger to defend himself from the bandits back then even when he was capable to do it himself! If he wouldn’t even make the first move, how much more to attack on his own volition.

Her eyes glanced at the scrolls scattered on the floor. Glowing letters that shifted every other second caught her attention, and the memory of the letter she had accepted from Teo flashed at the back of her head.

She concentrated on the scroll nearest to her, and just as she had suspected, it was definitely the same with the ball invitation they had received from the vampire king.

’Magic!’ the thought instantly occurred in her mind, ’The vampire king never intended to make peace with the Zemyaturs! He knew one of us would inevitably be forced to read the scrolls and wrote something to cause disorder.’

Elys grimaced with the conclusion she had arrived unto.

Suddenly, a loud horn blasted from outside. Everyone turned to where the sound came from. Aleksander was momentarily distracted, and they listened in as someone announced, "There has been a breech from the borders! Vampires have entered, werewolves are hot on their track!"

"What?!" Elys gasped in disbelief.

Sir Noa clicked his tongue. He couldn’t believe all of this would happen when they had been extremely vigilant for many, many years.

His eyes and Elys met for a fraction of a second and she called out to him, "Go! I will handle my husband, save your people!"

The adviser was hesitant at first. He knew the princess wasn’t a vampire, but she herself held a weapon in her hands, violating their protocols just as her husband did.

What was his assurance that she wasn’t also in on the attack?

"Hurry up! Hah!" Elys yelled at him as she parried Aleksander’s attack. "I am on your side, believe me!"

Noa couldn’t find the words to describe why he suddenly found himself believing the princess’ words. It was a gamble to trust anyone from the Western Kingdom, even if she was a human like the rest of the Eastern citizens.

A huge explosion erupted from the west side of the palace where the border gates were closest, the vampires successfully infiltrating the palace.

He worried for Queen Euphemia’s safety, but hopefully Lawin was able to do his job right.

"Men! Secure all civilians and animals that couldn’t fight," the adviser ordered the palace guards.

They heeded the man’s orders, and disbanded from their barricade and left Elys and Aleksander to battle it out in the throne room. Noa lingered for a little while, observing how the princess was fighting the prince with remarkable strength and agility.

He was at awe at the human’s ability to be at par with a vampire. Not to mention she only had a dagger compared to the sword the prince wielded. Both of them had been injured by each other, but neither of them seemed to be backing down from the fight.

"Rah!"

Aleksander thrusted his sword forward, slowly losing control of himself and his consciousness as King Raxus’ magic ate him away. His mouth spoke on its own, his body moving accordingly with the command in the scroll he read.

"Hah!"

The princess dodged his attack, spun around to get behind him, and then swiftly brought her right foot towards the back of Aleksander’s knees.

The vampire prince didn’t expect her move and felt his knees give in with the blow she gave him. Aleksander dropped to the floor, and Elys kicked his hand as well, sending the sword hurtling to the corner.

Elys raised her fist high in the air, and with all her strength, brought the blunt side of her knife towards the prince’s head.

"Gakh!" Aleksander coughed, the concentrated blow sending white sparks in his eyes.

His vision started to blur, but the magic that controlled him kept his body moving despite being nearly unconscious. Elys was all out of options to stop Aleksander, except perhaps to kill him.

"Princess Elysianne!" a woman’s voice called out.

With the corner of her eyes, Elys saw Cordelia and Henry being surrounded by their own men. The vampire knights that had accompanied them had turned on their loyal servants.

One of them, a man in armor with cold blue ocean eyes, smiled sweetly at Elys, but his gesture only sent chills run through her spine.

"Wait, who is that man?" she suddenly came to realize the man wasn’t any of the knights that she had traveled with.

"Your highness!" a familiar voice distracted Elys. "You are as impressive as the day we first met."

Aleksander who was half unconscious lunged at Elys. She had been wrong to have turned her head towards the voice that called out to her, and Aleksander hap the golden opportunity to knock the wind out of her as his body slammed full force.

The prince pinned Elys to the floor, and she heard several footsteps approach them. She lifted her head and her ruby eyes widened with shock.

"Teo?" she croaked, half out of breath from the weight with which Aleksander’s body brought down on her. "You traitor!" she hissed at the knight.

He was with the man with blue eyes, both of them grinning at her smugly.

Elys would have done anything to punch the arrogant look off of their faces.
