Chapter 206: Could She Possibly Be?
Elys was too stunned to speak a single word in response to what Cordelia said. She couldn’t believe that her trusted maidservant could say something like that to her. Hadn’t the two of them already spoken about the same thing just moments ago?
Cordelia had even given her words of encouragement.
"What kind of nonsense are you spouting, Cordelia?" Aleksander asked her.
The vampire king pulled Elys towards him as he noticed his wife had turned to stone with what her ’trusted’ and ’loyal’ maidservant had said to her.
"I meant what I said, and I am not saying any nonsense here," the old woman spoke.
Her eyes stared at the young king as if he was the devil incarnate, her disapproval more than just obvious with the way she looked at Aleksander.
Hearing the words Cordelia said, Aleksander couldn’t help but scoff.
"What has changed with you, woman?" the vampire king gazed at the maidservant with equal disdain. "You barge in my office like a barbarian and now spew words that even made your Queen turn to stone with shock."
Cordelia clicked her tongue in response.
"Who do you call a barbarian now? It is your kind that has been feared by many humans due to your sadistic ways of pillaging them one by one. I have never seen a hint of remorse in any of this kingdom’s vampires when the topic of slavery and human persecution comes up," she said.
Aleksander merely tilted his head in a cocky manner as he listened to Cordelia’s blabber. He already knew that the rest of his people didn’t share the same sentiments as he did when he agreed to Elys’ conditions.
’What was the point with Cordelia speaking all of the obvious?’ the vampire king asked himself in silence.
Suddenly, an idea popped into his mind.
’Not unless she has something more to be angry about. Some underlying reason for her true colors to show towards me,’ Aleksander speculated.
The young king’s eyes swept to his wife beside him.
Her face was blank, liken to a dead shell from which the soul owner had departed from. His Queen had the look of betrayal etched on her face – disbelief and shock mixed in together to create a poisonous combination with which she couldn’t make a move.
Elys could actually hear everything that they were talking about, but she just couldn’t find the will to even utter a single word. She wanted to mediate between Cordelia and Aleksander, but it seemed like she was already too late to even say anything that could stop them from going down a nasty road of bickering.
"You have done my Queen dirty. You sully the royal blood in her which carries the blood of mighty and wise rulers of the Northern Kingdom for centuries!" the old woman yelled at the vampire; her accusing finger pointed at him with a passion to kill.
Aleksander could only laugh at the maidservant’s words.
"Sully? Why would the act of showing her my endless love and devotion be something that should sully her reputation?" Aleksander asked Cordelia, anger rising inside his heart. "Do you want to die, Cordelia?"
All of a sudden, Aleksander felt a strong tug on his sleeve. He turned his head to see his wife’s worried face. She shook her head and then took a step forward as she pushed Aleksander to the side.
The young king couldn’t decide whether he should be happy or concerned that Elys had finally recovered from her momentary state of shock. A part of him rejoiced as he was worried as well for her, while another part of him frowned as obviously, Elys was bound to be biased to Cordelia even when the old woman had stabbed her right in the chest with her hurtful words.
"Cordelia," Elys said, her brows forming a taut bridge in the middle.
The former Northern Princess took her stand in front of her most loyal former lady in waiting. Before they had been taken into slavery for the vampires, Cordelia had always been by her side. From the day she was conceived to this very day – she stayed and supported Elys.
"Your majesty, Queen Elysianne," the old woman replied to her.
"Tell me the whole truth, Cordelia," Elys said, her eyes stinging and on the verge of tears, "You seem to have actually held back your real sentiments when I had confided in you back in my office."
"I wouldn’t waste my time, wife," Aleksander said, "Aside from the fact that she had interrupted us in our private moment together, she had also insulted you."
"Shut up, Aleksander," Elys snapped at her husband, "I am not talking to you. If you don’t mind, I would like to address my own maidservant?"
"Urgh..." the young king bit his tongue, "Fine!"
"Well, thank you very much, dear husband, my king," Elys responded curtly.
There was an obvious and oozing amount of sarcasm in the way she had thanked Aleksander. He noticed it, but decided to just let it go. Cordelia was Elys’ maidservant in the first place, but even so, Aleksander would be a liar to deny the fact that he wanted to handle Cordelia’s punishment himself.
He wondered what would his wife do with the insolent old woman.
This was the very first time since they have risen to the throne that Cordelia had shown such an obvious amount of disdain towards matters regarding Elys and Aleksander. Now that he thought about it, Aleksander got curious as to what the old woman’s reasoning was behind her scornful looks at the moment.
"Cordelia, speak to me your truth as I have spoken mine to you," Elys coaxed the maidservant. "I will never deny the fact that I have been dismayed by what you have done, but I am more than willing to listen to the logic behind those words you have spoken towards me and the Western King."
The young king moved forward to stand beside his wife. Cordelia’s eyes followed him, her gaze never faltering as she conveyed just how much she hated Aleksander and the way he treated Elys.
"Cordelia?" Elys asked again, noticing that the old woman hadn’t spoken a single word to clear her name.
The maidservant turned her attention back to the young queen. Her brown eyes were fierce and ready for any battle, but for what kind of battle, Elys doesn’t really have a clue about.
"It is because you have changed, your majesty," Cordelia finally explained.
Aleksander howled in laughter beside Elys, his voice echoing all around the room, "Changed? You hurt your queen’s feelings just because she changed? Woman, change is the only thing permanent in this world."
"Back off, Aleksander," Elys swatted his hand away as he tried to hold her hands. "I told you to stand aside and let me handle this."
"My apologies, my queen," Aleksander hurriedly replied.
"Carry on, Cordelia," Elys said to the distressed maidservant.
"You have changed far from what and who you are supposed to be, Queen Elysianne," Cordelia said. "You have forgotten your people, mingled yourself around vampires whom we should be killing instead of making them an ally."
"It is for the better good, Cordelia!" Elys said, "In the long run, all of the humans will benefit from all of our plans."
The young queen took a step closer to Cordelia, her arms wide open as if to give the old woman a warm and big hug.
But instead of a hug in return, Cordelia suddenly swung the sword she stole from one of the knights. Elys was quick enough to jump away, but a tiny lock of her red hair had been unfortunately cut off.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing?!" Aleksander’s voice boomed.
The vampire king swiftly pulled his wife further away from the maidservant who seemed to have gone rogue. She had the point of the sword pointed towards them, as if any time they came closer she could easily swipe at them.
In the heat of the moment, Cordelia suddenly dropped something from inside her sleeves. Elys noted something familiar rolling to the ground, and her eyes immediately gravitated towards it.
Cordelia scrambled to grab the object she had dropped, but Aleksander wasn’t having any of her disrespect anymore. Noticing how frantic the old woman’s face looked when something rolled down the floor, the young king decided to steal it from her.
With agile hands, Aleksander swiped the rolling item from the floor long before Elys nor Cordelia could even reach out for it.
"What the hell is this?" Aleksander wondered as he raised the item he snatched from Cordelia.
He held it high into the air, making it visible to everyone in the room. Cordelia’s exasperated groan echoed behind him, while Elys gasped at the sight of the item.
"Cordelia, why do you have this item?" Elys asked as she turned to the maidservant in disbelief. "Could you possibly be..."
She feared to say the words she had in mind.C
