Chapter 207: Her Betrayal

Chapter 207: Her Betrayal

Cordelia’s gaze was firm as her brown eyes stared right into Elys. The old woman who had served the former Northern Princess with all that she had had now turned cold against her. Elysianne could not find where to begin with how she felt looking into the unfamiliar expression in Cordelia’s face.

Aleksander, on the other hand, could only smirk in sarcasm. The item that he snatched rolling from the floor was enough to convince him of one thing.

Aside from the old woman’s insolence with barging in his office unannounced, the discovery of her secret deemed to have put to stone the young king’s decision.

"My, my, oh my," the vampire king whistled in amemusement, "if my eyes aren’t tricking me, this should be enough evidence to have you beheaded, Cordelia. Why do you have the same looking vial as that of the capital arsonist?"

The old maidservant clicked her tongued as a scowl formed all over her face.

"Why do you have this, Cordelia?" Elys whipped her pointed finger towards where Aleksander stood with an evil face.

The old woman didn’t respond to Elys. Instead, she closed her eyes and took out her hair tie. Her snowy white hair which was previously neatly tied in a knot, had now come undone.

Elys frowned immediately, as the act had meant for the Northern Kingdoms’ nobilities who had been found ashamed one way or another since the very beginning of their kingdom.

Cordelia raised her fist forward, opening it as her hairtie dropped to the dround

"Just as what I have mentioned before," she began, "you, of all people, have changed, your majesty. I don’t think I coud ever be able to protect and serve you as I have before all of this shit show added."

Elys blinked several times before her pending tears would spill out of her hurt eyes.

"In truth, even before Sir Noa had arrived in the Western Kingdom, he and I have already spoken," the old woman confessed. "He gave me a choice, as well as a weapon that no one would even think of anything dangerous except when used in the correct way."

"Do you mean by setting the whole capital on fire?" Aleksander butted in.

He was getting impatient with all the chatter when what they should focus on was the fact that Cordelia, his wife’s most trusted, had betrayed all of them.

"I didn’t burn the capital!" Cordelia burst out in anger, the tip of her stolen sword poimted at Aleksander, "Apparently the Eastern adviser had also bribed someone else to start a fire if by chance I wouldn’t do it myself."

"Why?" Elys asked the maidservant, her voice almost cracking at the very last word.

Her hands were shaking beside her as she gathered a huge clump of her skirt’s fabric. She didn’t want to believe what she was hearing, but with Cordelia spilling spoiled milk one after the other, the young queen had no choice but to convince herself of the hurtful truth.

Her most trusted maiservant, a confidant who took care of her for the longest of time, the woman she considered as a second mother, had truly betrayed them.

It was a hard pill to swallow.

Elys’ eyes lifted as a mixture of anger and hurt, as well as dismay, brewed a thunderstorm inside her head.

Coincidentally, the weather outside seemed to have understood the situation called for its dramatic entrance.

The skies unknowingly darkened, black clouds rolling over as thunder rumbled from the distance. It was surely going to rain again.

Aleksander pocketed the tiny vial he got from Cordelia’s clumsiness. Elys stood still as her eyes locked with Cordelia’s unwavering browns.

"What am I supposed to do with you?" Elys asked Cordelia. "Was it also you who had emanated that dark aura outside my door?"

She was at a loss for she never did expect the old woman to have betrayal in her mind. Elys watched as her maidservant shook her head in denial.

"That could never be me," she said.

"Knowing the fact that you considered burning the capital, I would most certainly have my doubts about everything you say from now on," Aleksander butted in.

"I don’t care what you think of me, vampire," Cordelia hissed at the Western King, "your opinion does not matter to me."

The young king turned to his wife and asked her, "My Queen, we have wasted too much time spent with listening to this traitor’s excuses. With your permission, I can have her restrained and punished accordingly for treason."

"Elysianne Whitecaster," Cordelia spoke to Elys directly, disregarding all together how dangerous Aleksander was when provoked. "Sir Noa had offered us sanctuary at the Eastern Kingdom, including all of our people."

"He said that?" Elys’ brows arched in shock.

Cordelia nodded, and she pointed towards the vampire king as she said, "All we have to do is to hand this monster over to them for his wrongdoings against the Eastern Kingdom."

Elys turned towards Aleksander whereas the young king growled at Cordelia.

"You dare to turn my queen against me, you old woman?!" he said with pure vehemence.

His golden eyes were raging as he tried to control his anger against Cordelia. He knew how much Elys had fought for the old woman to be by her side from the very beginning of their marriage, and he could see that up to this moment, Elys still considered Cordelia close to her heart despite everything else.

The hand that had stopped Aleksander from taking another step forward was evidence enough for that.

"Wife, you must not listen to Cordelia’s reasonings," Aleksander said. "I can fulfill your wishes, my queen. You don’t have to go to the Eastern Kingdom’s side to get what you want. I will give you more than what they are trying to buy you with!"

Elys was torn between the progress that she had made in the Western Kingdom to that of the Eastern Kingdom’s offer. She had already passed down her first decree to create a safer living condition for her people, and soon enough she knew her goals were within reach.

She looked up and stared into Cordelia’s expectant eyes, and the maidservant’s expression immediately darkened. She could read Elys’ mind without even having the ability to hear her thoughts. The mask that the former Northern Warrior Princess wore was recognized by an equally talented former Northern Warrior lady in waiting.

The look of rejection flashed from the old woman’s face like neon signage.

"You are kidding, right?" Cordelia asked as her hands trembled, almost dropping the sword she held towards the vampire king.

"Cordelia, please drop the sword," Elys said as she walked towards her maidservant. "We already made significant progress in the Western Kingdom. Our plans for all humans to live peacefully should come to fruition soon enough."

The old woman was confused and hurt at the same time. In her muddled state, Cordelia slashed at Elys and cried out in frustration.

The vampire king flashed from where he stood and quickly grabbed his queen from Cordelia’s reach.

"Ah!" Elys gasped.

She raised her arm and saw blood stain the sheer fabric of her dress’ sleeve. A long gash had appeared from Cordelia’s sword nicking her, and Elys felt her strength almost leave her.

Aleksander immediately held her arm to his mouth and quickly licked the blood away. At the same time, his saliva began to work its magic and Elys started to feel the uncomfortable itch that the instant healing process brought.

The young queen was taken by surprise by everything that she could not even make a move to step away from Cordelia’s attack. If it were not for Aleksander’s quick reaction, she would have had a very serious injury.

"You are no longer the Princess that I have served!" the old woman screamed, "You are nothing but a shell now. Corrupted by this vampire’s twisted mind, you have thrown yourself away and lost the essence of being a royal blood descendant of the Northern Kingdom."

Aleksander pulled Elys into his arms in a protective manner, and he asked Elys one last time, "Elysianne, one word from you and I will have Cordelia restrained. She clearly doesn’t want to listen to you anymore, the loyalty has long been cracking from the seams."

Cordelia heard Aleksander’s words, and without hesitation, started to run towards him in a bid to attack the vampire as well.

"Haaahh!!!" the old woman cried out.

She swung her sword and Aleksander was thankfully quick enough to dodge her. But dodging the human maidservant served to be futile, as she was relentlessly chasing him no matter where he jumped off to. Cordelia reached out for a huge book from one of Aleksander’s shelves, and hurled it towards the vampire. Aleksander deflected the hardbound projectile with a swipe od his arm, but little did he expect the force at which it hit him.

"Argh!" he yelped in pain.

Tables and chairs were destroyed along the way as Cordelia rampaged within the office.

The vampire king held Elys close to him all this while, and he said, "Elys, make up your mind!"
