Chapter 138: Unlucky Circumstances
Cordelia trudged through muddy puddles with Henry on her back. Her head was running wild with thoughts of what happened a while ago between her and the old man. She could not believe that she did that to him...
The old woman’s tough armor began to waver.
She could feel her whole face burn with the memory. The touch and how many times she squeezed... it was utterly embarrassing once Henry was going to wake up.
As she reached the same place that she had left the horse tied to a quiet corner, she heard Henry stir behind her.
"Are you awake? Henry, do you hear me?" the old woman asked.
"Hngh!!!" grunted Henry.
After that single grunt from him, there had been no other response after several minutes Cordelia waited. Not even a sound could be heard from him."
"Alright, up we go!" Cordelia heaved the old man’s body behind the horse.
She must bring Henry back as soon as possible, since the King Aleksander was expecting him to return to the palace shortly after his mission.
Unfortunately, since both of them were not informed about the other’s mission, then it was only natural for Cordelia not to trust anyone who would claim they were acquaintances through a full faced mask.
Was it safe to say that it should be Aleksander’s fault for not disclosing Henry’s mission with her and the newly crowned human queen? Or was Henry right to say that she should have listened more than to react hastily?
Cordelia shook her head in denial, but the fact was still true.
She attacked Henry even as he tried to stop her – the worst part was how she held him too!
As Henry’s whole body was put on the horse, the beast neighed with the man’s weight, and Cordelia tried to calm it down to avoid attention dragging towards them. She did not want to deal with another wild chase or a fight.
"There, there," Cordelia soothed the horse to fully calm down.
Cordelia mounted the horse, and then kicked it to the sides as she said, "We need to get out of here now, come on!"
A series of lightning flashed in the skies, and shortly afterwards, thunder rolled in. The rain had turned into a full blown storm, falling hard on them as they tried to move about the town inconspicuously.
Cordelia’s whole body and mind were wary.
She pulled her cloth mask on. The maidservant already assumed that nearly all of the kingdom would have known her face or that of any people directly in contact with the new controversial king.
She glanced behind her and saw Henry’s mask was still on. The old woman had made him wear it again just in case they would run into people who might recognize them.
It was still better to be safe.
In her haste to get to the safety of the next town, Cordelia deliberately went to a shortcut path she discovered just today. It was quite dangerous, but she did not want to be under the rain any longer.
She wanted to return already, hoping that Henry would not take it against her for attacking him like that.
"Wait," the old woman muttered, "what is that sound?"
As the horse ran off towards the town’s borders, Cordelia could hear something rumbling, like it came from the ground.
She turned her head both ways as the horse treaded carefully a narrow cliff road. There was nothing suspicious regarding the roads, and so the old woman decided to just let it go as natural noises.
Cordelia’s hands were on the rein, but when she saw how close Henry was about to fall off, then did she grab and held him steady – one hand on Henry, and another on the reins.
All of a sudden, lightning struck a tree near them, toppling it down towards their direction.
’Goddammit!’ she cursed inside her head.
Her senses went into overdrive as she tried to think of a way to dodge the falling tree. It only would allow them perhaps several seconds to find the answer, and fortunately for Cordelia, she did find one just in time.
The only problem it would cause them would be due to the fact that the horse might not survive the sudden plans she was contemplating on doing.
Once at the final seconds of the tree falling, Cordelia had no other choice but to dodge it by jumping off the horse and into the tiny crevices, or to fall down the ravines and get herself killed as she’d hit branches after branches of tall trees below.
Not to mention if she would not hit trees, then she might as well be dead when she would hit rocks down the ravine.
Pulling Henry off of the horse with her muscular and well-trained for heavy lifting hands.
The two of them jumped off the horse, and ultimately heard the loud crashing sound of the tree. The horse’s cry was immediately gone, as the sound of the storm raging was stronger than that.
"Damn it, damn it, damn it!" Cordelia swore. "Why am I so unlucky?!"
The tiny crevice wherein she dragged Henry into was indeed cramped as she expected. There was little space for her to turn around, and she was practically already glued to the walls while Henry was still unconscious.
"Did I really hurt him that bad for him to be unconscious this long?" Cordelia muttered under her breath. "A squeeze in the balls shouldn’t have caused such a long unconscious state.
Cordelia thought she would be fine if she carried the old man on her back. She tried to peer over the cliff, and saw how damaged the road had been with the falling tree several moments awhile back.
Just in time that she had aired out her own question, Henry finally stirred. Cordelia’s eyes widened with surprise, and she didn’t think she would actually react that way.
Why was she being jittery now that the man was finally awaking?
