Chapter 134: True Colors
Chapter 134: True Colors
Elys’ room was eventually filled with six noble ladies of vampire high society. The air was heavy as they entered. The young queen could sense even a bit of hostility from a few of them.
"Merry meet, your majesty, Queen Elysianne," all six of the noble ladies greeted her simultaneously.
"Merry meet, ladies," Elys responded in the customary ways she noted most nobles used in the Western Kingdom. "Come sit down."
She waved for them to sit down the couches, and noted how majority of them hesitated for a fraction of a second. Elys could tell all of them were suspicious of the fact they were chosen at all to be her ladies in waiting.
"Don’t just stand there," she said as she took another sip of her tea, "it would be bad for my reputation should people think I don’t take care of my ladies to let them stand all day."
One by one, the noble ladies took the cue and sat down in front of Elysianne.
Elysianne’s teacup clinked as she set it down the table. She straightened her back, and smiled at the women in front of her.
"I do apologize to have started tea by myself, ladies," she began small talks, "I suppose all of you would have preferred fresh blood so I ordered them to be brought as soon as possible. But if some of you would want to, then by all means, enjoy the tea and sweets."
"Your majesty, with all due respect," one of the ladies spoke up, "we don’t want fake pleasantries. Could you just get to the point why you called us here?"
Electricity zapped with another girl, and Elys noted she was a bit tense, making her magical affinity go awry. She elbowed the lady that took the courage to speak up, and mumbled something along the lines of the lady being tactless.
The lady that spoke up to Elys was beside Electric Girl, and Elys couldn’t help but to smirk a little.
How funny it was to see that the ladies she had chosen were actually easy to intimidate – except maybe for one.
A noble vampire lady with strikingly beautiful emerald eyes awaited Elys’ response to her question. Her hair was tied up in a clean knot that was shaped into a blooming flower, and her posture worthy of being praised.
She looked demure - like a marble statue sculpted by the gods that came to life - but her mouth betrayed her appearance.
Elys inhaled and exhaled twice before she let out a long sigh and responded, "Quite bold of you, Lady...?" she trailed off, forgetting the name of the girl.
"Azalea Igniss, your majesty," the girl replied curtly, "Eldest daughter of the Igniss family."
Elys could tell that she was the most feisty and outspoken out of the six ladies in front of her. She lifted herself a piece of macaroon from the stacks of sweets, and then popped it into her mouth.
The young queen savored the sweet dessert, as well as the anxious energies that the other ladies emanated. It was clear they were not happy to be chosen by her, despite the fact that Elys herself was the queen of the Western Kingdom now.
A knock came by her doors and in came a servant with a tray containing glasses of red liquid.
"Ah, just in time," she clapped her hands together. "Please, serve my ladies each a glass."
Now with a glass of blood in each hand, the ladies waited for Elys to answer Lady Azalea’s question a while ago. By the time that the servant got out and the doors shut with an audible thud, Elys’ expression changed from the soft to serious.
"Lady Azalea," she spoke.
"Yes, your majesty," the noble lady responded.
"You ask why you ladies were chosen by me, am I right?" Elys asked, her ruby eyes locking in Lady Azalea’s emerald eyes.
"Yes, I think that a fool would even have the same questions as all of us do," the lady replied, her tone cold and sharp. "Why did you choose us out of all the ladies that could potentially serve you, your majesty?"
"I like that you are brave enough to address the main agenda I would have discussed a bit later," Elys leaned back and gazed at the other ladies, "I really would have preferred to know all of you first before I go into such details, if you won’t mind?"
The other ladies gulped down a lump that got stuck to their throat.
Another lady who Elys noted had a dark air to her just coolly sipped the blood from her glass without much care. She looked like she just came because she was told to, her eyes uninterested with the current exchange of words between the young queen and Lady Azalea.
Sensing that she was being looked at, the lady’s eyes traveled from inspecting a tiny lipstick stain on her glass, and went to look Elys straight in the eyes.
"I am Baroness Ekaterina Rosso, your majesty," she introduced herself, and then pointed out to the others, "The lady in pink, Countess Rusiana Yach. To her left and onwards, Lady Beatrice Thyrston, Lady Tabitha Wigrun, and the lady with the electric affinity, Lady Penelope Larrow."
Elysianne laughed lightly and then said, "I see that you are all in a hurry to get introduced in just one go."
"I’d like to think that her majesty is just trying to play with our heads," Baroness Ekaterina said as she turned her attention back to her glass. "But anyways, as I noted Lady Azalea was demanding an answer that all of us wants to know, then by all means, Queen Elysianne, do tell."
The young queen saw that despite the laid back and bored tone in Baroness Ekaterina’s voice, she herself exuded power just by the movements she made. If memory served her right, the Rossos were mostly neutral.
But being neutral doesn’t mean that the family was by all means friendly.
Elys smirked.
It seemed like her picks were starting to show a bit of their true colors.
