Chapter 133: Worries

"I am worried, husband," Elys said as she shut her book close. "It has been a day since Cordelia took the mission that I gave her to tail Lady Catalina’s activities."

The young queen put down the book she was reading and started to pace around the queen’s bedchamber.

After they had announced the shifting and anointing of new positions of palace officials and staff, Elys insisted that she must immediately begin weeding out potential enemies and allies by having her chosen ladies in waiting meet her the very next day.

The queen’s bedchamber was elaborately furnished, a queen-sized bed and a walk-in closet as with a huge collection of dresses from the previous queen.

’We will need to get herself tailored clothes that fit her,’ Aleksander pondered as they first walked into the bedchamber for the first time earlier that day.

As of the moment, Aleksander’s eyes followed his wife’s agitated marching.

Her footsteps were heavy, and the dark atmosphere outside with the raging storm wasn’t helping too.

The young king released a heavy sigh and then stood up from the couch to grab her hand and prevent her from biting of her nails off.

"Have some faith in your maidservant, wife," Aleksander said. "Come sit down and have a cup of warm tea and some snacks. Food will make you feel better and ease your anxiety."

"I am not anxious," Elys instantly countered.

Aleksander only chuckled and pulled her to the couch.

"You aren’t fooling me, wife," he said.

On the table, a tea set combined with several kinds of sweets were laid out. Macaroons, puddings, donuts, and biscuits to name a few. Containers of select dried flowers and loose-leaf tea were made available.

"What tea do you prefer?" Aleksander tried to ease the tension by making small talk.

"Hmph..." his wife grunted in reply.

Her forehead creased as her mind raced with endless possibilities. Her head was an endless battlefield. Some thoughts were positive, while others weren’t that much pleasant to even think of.

Elys absentmindedly grabbed a fruit tart and gobbled it in one bite. Aleksander’s eyes widened with surprise, as Elys started to stuff her face with sweets after sweets.

"Hey, slow down, my queen," Aleksander said, "Let me pour your tea first."

Vampires normally didn’t eat human food, but with Elys being the very first human queen, Aleksander made sure to order the kitchens were stocked with enough human food to hold several parties and banquets in a row.

The vampire king poured his wife a cup of dried rose petals tea. Its sweet and distinct aroma wafted in the air as the steam from the tea kettle rose. He added a cube of sugar into the cup, stirred it for a bit, and then handed it over to Elys.

"Here, drink first," Aleksander told her.

"Thank you," she replied, "But what do you think could have gone wrong? I do believe Cordelia could handle herself, but what if, Aleksander? What if something did happen?"

Elys’ voice wasn’t entirely panicked, but Aleksander could sense her heartbeat racing. Her calm face might fool the best of people, but a vampire was keen to the slightest sounds of the human body, even the rush of blood in their veins if they really concentrated.

"Drink first, wife," Aleksander repeated himself. "I am sure Cordelia is fine."

"Come to think of it, where is Henry? I haven’t noticed him after last night’s meeting with the High Courts," Elys wondered.

"I gave him an errand," he replied.

"An errand you say," she hummed.

"Like you, I am worried as well that he hasn’t returned yet, but I trust Henry would be back within the day," Aleksander added.

Elys pursed her lips and then pressed them together in a fine line.

Lightning flashed from outside their windows, and thunder roared right after. The storm had been raging since the night before, and Elys couldn’t help but feel agitated with the idea that Cordelia might have gotten into some accident of some sorts.

She lowered her eyes towards the warm cup in her hands. The fragrance of rose petals entered her senses, and Elys started to feel a sort of relaxing effect wash over her.

As Elys drank the tea, and as what Aleksander said, it did somehow take away a bit of her nerves.

’Perhaps he is right,’ she convinced herself. ’Cordelia is strong and can handle herself. She will most definitely be back.’

DING DONG!

Elys’ eyes turned to the grandfather clock in her bedchamber and noted the time. She put her teacup down, and composed herself as she cleared her throat.

Her gaze swept back towards her husband, and she said, "It is almost time, husband. My ladies in waiting will be arriving soon. You should go."

Aleksander’s face twisted at the mention of the idea he must leave Elysianne alone with enemies in one room.

"Are you sure you would be fine?" he asked her. "Those ladies are nobilities. Their magical affinities are naturally stronger than most vampires."

"Worry not, my king," Elys donned a serious face. "I am no damsel in distress. I can handle my own."

"I can sit with you as you speak with them," Aleksander insisted one more time.

"We already discussed this last night after visiting the Royal Archives and Hallowed Chambers," Elys sighed.

She rubbed her temples in a circular manner. She knew Aleksander was going to insist on it, but she was adamant that she needed to do it on her own.

"Have six glasses of fresh blood served on your way out, husband," Elys added. "A queen must be welcoming and hospitable to gain trust from her subjects."

Aleksander frowned, "I haven’t even agreed to get out yet. And might I add, funny how you immediately switched your persona the moment the clock reminded you of the time. Moments ago, you were worried sick of Cordelia."

Elys released a heavy sigh.

Several knocks came from the doors, and a guard announced the arrival of her ladies in waiting.

"Get out, husband - " Elys turned to Aleksander, but his seat has suddenly become empty in a split second.

A gust of wind blew inside her room, and Elys turned to see Aleksander jump out of her window.
