Chapter 106: The Night Before They Ruled Part 1
Elys’ night lamp flickered the night Aleksander knocked on her doors and begged for her help. The light dimmed for a second as if sensing her wavering confidence when it came to using her magic again.
The princess had firmly denied to use her powers for the prince’s gain several times already, but Aleksander was adamant that it was a win not just only for him, but for both of them.
Then again after he suddenly barged in and caught the princess off-guard, Elys mistakenly nodded in surprise when he asked her again for help. It was never her intention to answer him that way, as it was just too ambiguous.
Obviously, Prince Aleksander took it as Elys fully committing to his request.
A soft wind blew from an open window, touching the princess’ skin like a cold hand caressing her. Elys bit the inside of her cheeks and suppressed the urge to shiver.
She didn’t want to look as if Aleksander’s words affected her.
"Your highness," Elys spoke as she turned her eyes away from the prince, "I think I answered you too quickly and in such a vague manner too. I don’t want to use my powers for you. I don’t even want to use it in the first place."
"But you already had," Aleksander insisted, "you replenished my mana back then. Why not use it now to your advantage?"
The prince’s smile quickly turned forlorn. He wasn’t great with accepting rejection, as he had already suffered too much of it from his father and the rest of the vampire kingdom.
He clenched his teeth and put on a face too stubborn to be rejected – Aleksander wasn’t going to back down.
Determined to get a yes from the princess, he stepped into the princess’ bedchamber. Elys took several steps back, finding herself caught between her bed and the prince who closed the door behind him.
The bastard prince took the princess in his arms, his alexandrite eyes met her blazing reds and their stares were electrifying.
"Princess," he said as he tightened his arms around her, "please lend me your hand."
"Aleksander," Elys spoke as the prince’s arms wrapped around her. "You are making a mistake by showing me such affection."
She could feel his heart beating wildly, even hear it as his chest leveled to Elys’ ears. She had turned her head so that her face wouldn’t be crushed from the prince’s sudden display of affection. It was suspicious to her – why would he even be this nice to her now?
"Woman, witch, she-devil... whatever the hell you are, remember this – you are my choice, and this is our moment," Aleksander whispered, "this is our chance to fight back - together."
"Your highness, are we not enemies to begin with? You are a fool to dote on me as such," she countered.
"Because I love you so, and this marriage will not fall for we have one end goal," Aleksander pulled away from Elys and then guided her to sit down the edge of her bed.
The princess caught herself suppressing a laugh.
Love?
Who in their right minds do actually love their enemies?
The prince was going way too far in his attempt to get Elys to join his side. Did he think by saying he loved her that Elys could be wooed into helping him?
’What a pathetic move,’ the princess thought at the back of her mind.
"Husband, what goal do we have in common but to kill each other?" she asked Aleksander.
Elys still couldn’t believe Aleksander used the word ’love’ against her. She tried to humor him and the princess teased the man with her own game of seduction – from tousling his beautiful raven hair, caressing his chiseled jawline, to tracing the tips of her fingers on his kissable lips.
"Change is the only thing inevitable in this world. It is best you don’t get too attached to me even as I help you in small things such as reading records and digging dirt on the vampire nobilities," Elys whispered, her words laden with honey.
She moved in closer, her body pressed on his as they played a dangerous game.
"You are being bold, wife," Aleksander smirked, "I didn’t know you are capable of such acts."
Elys let out a sardonic laugh, "You think I could be swayed by mere words? Love isn’t something you can push down my throat and make me swallow, dear husband. I can play your games too if need be."
The princess stared into Aleksander’s eyes, challenging him with her fierce determination to decline his persistent request to use her powers for his revenge.
His eyes were something to behold – it was exquisite, a beautiful pool to drown in, but she can’t be swayed by such things.
The prince’s eyes momentarily switched from the cool icy silver oceans, to a piercing tinge of gold, and the princess saw the enemy in him. With a swift movement, Aleksander pushed the princess towards the bed.
He twisted his body and with much ease, he had her restrained between his muscled legs. He was on top of her now and in control.
"I thought you said you would do better than to push me when I don’t want to, your highness?" Elys said, her brows starting to meet each other in the middle.
The princess tried to escape his clutches as she kicked her legs and dug her nails on his skin. Quite coincidentally, the two of them wore thin clothes at the moment – Elys in her nightgown and the prince with nothing but a shirt and the casual pants he usually wore to pair.
Elys’ nails went through his thin shirt, and with it made strips of wounds in her bid to get out of the cage he put her in with his strong arms. Blood trickled from the scratches and dropped on the pristine crumpled bedsheets.
Aleksander heaved a sigh of dejection, "Why can’t you see the advantages of my offer, princess? If you are afraid of losing control, then I will be by your side to keep you grounded!"
