The Masked prince -
Chapter 93: Would Regan Agree?
Chapter 93: Would Regan Agree?
Evelyn however couldn’t believe Regan because she didn’t find any other reason behind Regan leaving her here suddenly.
Perhaps Regan could also see this and hence he had to tell her what he had been thinking all along.
"I blame myself, Evelyn."
After a moment of silence, he smiled bitterly which could be seen only half because of his mask.
"I had promised you that I would protect you. I had promised that no one would be able to harm you yet I couldn’t do anything when he did all that. I can’t ...I can’t even bring you the justice you deserve."
"Since I can’t protect you...it is better to let go of you. That’s why I left you here ...the place you must be familiar to. Maybe you would want to go to your family. You are free to do so now. No one can stop you. Go to them and stay happy."
Although Regan’s heart hurt when he said these words, he still kept a forced smile on his lips.
Evelyn looked at the prince silently. She was too shocked to say anything. She had never expected that he was thinking all this.
That he was blaming himself.
Evelyn’s chin wobbled as fresh tears filled her eyes. She had never been like this. She could always keep her tears in control no matter how hard it was to live.
But the feelings she was experiencing were too new to her.
The words prince said made her heart ache so much that she couldn’t keep her tears in check.
Both of them were hurting but for each other pains.
"No, Your Highness...you can’t think like that."
She shook her head and said firmly as she swallowed while tears slid down her cheeks.
"Your Highness came to save me. Your Highness had always kept his promise."
She was just a slave. He thought this much...it was already very moving for her. No one had ever thought so much for her.
Regan however didn’t seem convinced and opened his mouth to speak
"Evelyn I..."
But before he could finish, Evelyn interrupted him. This time, she looked fierce as she held Regan’s hand suddenly and said
"No, Your Highness is not at fault. Your Highness can’t leave me here. If Your Highness still insists then I would request to be sold to that slave trader again."
"Evelyn! What are you saying?"
Regan asked in shock and confusion. But Evelyn continued
"Yes. Because that would be what happen in a few days. I have no family here. I am alone. I would soon be sold by someone."
Regan swallowed as he heard her words. He actually never considered this. Now when he wondered what could have happened if he had not stayed around to ensure that she would find some safe place then what could have happened, coldness filled his heart.
"No!"
He said coldly.
"Yes! That’s what happens here. People can do anything for money."
Regan went silent at that. Seeing him silent, Evelyn was scared and suddenly kneeled down to hold his leg.
Shocked by this move, Regan tried to hold her and make her stand but she was too adamant.
"Your Highness, please take me back. I don’t mind a little bit of beating. I don’t want any justice. As long as I can stay by Your Highness’s side, I don’t need anything."
As long as I can stay by Your Highness’s side, I don’t need anything.
The words rang in Regan’s ears a few times and his body was completely stiff. He could suddenly feel the moisture in his eyes and he blinked furiously.
Those words were perhaps the best words he had ever heard in his whole life. They were like a soothing balm on all the insecurities he had inside his heart.
It was those same words that melted Regan’s firm stand on sending Evelyn away.
How could he send her away! He would die every day knowing that she was not by his side.
Kneeling down in front of her, he wiped her tears again gently but this time, his eyes were no longer cold. They were soft and gentle.
"Alright, I won’t leave you here. Don’t cry."
Evelyn looked at him in a daze hearing his gentle words. When she was certain that he was not lying, she closed her eyes in relief.
Regan smiled sadly seeing her like this.
He couldn’t stop himself from stroking her hair gently but when she opened her eyes, he moved his hand away awkwardly.
"You shouldn’t sit on the cold ground."
Evelyn immediately nodded her head and stood up.
Her nose was however still red and Regan could feel her cold on his sleeve. He looked at her lowered eyes and thought for a moment before he grabbed her hand and held it tightly.
"Your hands are too cold. Let me warm them."
After saying these words, he didn’t even look at Evelyn and started to walk.
"Let’s go. Lavo must be waiting."
Walking by his side, Evelyn looked at their joined hands and her lips tilted up slightly to form a smile.
Was it weird that a few moments ago, she was crying and now she was suddenly feeling all sweet inside her heart?
But she doesn’t want to care about this for now.
The prince took her near the dense forests and Lavo was indeed waiting for them there.
Evelyn thought that she was having illusions but she saw the surprise in the giant creature’s eyes as if he knew that she was not going to return and now was surprised to see her here.
It even walked towards her and stretched its paw out adorably.
Evelyn scratched it gently and giggled when Lavo mewled softly.
While Regan looked at her softly hearing her giggles. This was perhaps the most beautiful sound he had ever heard.
And now he wanted to become so powerful that he could ensure that the smile on her lips would never vanish.
That no one would be able to lay even a hand on her again.
