Chapter 64: Rex’s Regrets

Chapter 64: Rex’s Regrets

Regan didn’t have any answer to Rex’s question. However, even without him answering his question, Rex received it very clearly.

"So it is because of Evelyn."

Rex said as he laughed suddenly.

His laughter was strange and it made Regan turn around and look at him with a frown which went deeper when he heard Rex say

"Regan, I suddenly regret bringing her near to you. You had left her outside but I being me still brought her inside the Royal Palace leaving you with no choice but to accept her as your person."

"Rex..."

Regan said as he looked at his brother with a deep frown but before he could say anything Rex shook his head and continued

"Regan, I know that you trust her. But I don’t want you to. I don’t trust her at all after knowing that she is from Zamorin. Do you even remember just how many attacks have been planned on you by those nobles and Royal family from Zamorin? I still remember all kinds of disgusting schemes they used against you. It was sometimes by luck and sometimes by our vigilance that you are now safe. How can you suppose that I can trust Evelyn with you after all this, Regan?"

Regan didn’t actually have anything to say in response to these words and it made Rex sigh. Still, he asked one more question that he had been having inside his heart.

"Did you wonder how those invaders entered the castle? I am yet to find it. But don’t you doubt that it can be Evelyn..."

"Rex!"

Regan said a little loudly before Rex could finish his words. He understood what Rex wanted to say. But he couldn’t believe that he was thinking like this.

Evelyn saved him. That girl was on the verge of death just because she saved his life.

How could Rex still doubt her?

"I know she saved you. But I also know that the bastard which is still alive from the Royal family of Zamorin can do anything to kill you. If he can do anything then the people sent by him might not be any less capable."

All Rex heard in return was silence.

But he knew what it meant. Regan was still determined to trust Evelyn.

On the other hand, Regan was torn. Rex was his brother. The only person he had ever cared about after his mother left him was Rex.

They have been by each other’s side in difficult times. He didn’t want to go against Rex but he didn’t want to hurt Evelyn in any way.

Perhaps Rex could understand Regan’s conflict so he conceded a little. Putting his hand on Regan’s shoulder, he said gently but in an equally concerned voice.

"I am not asking anything from you. Just be a little wary of her. Don’t trust her blindly until I investigate everything and make sure that she is not a danger to you, Regan. If something happened to you again, I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself as your elder brother again, Regan."

Rex’s eyes turned glossy when he said these words.

He still remembered how Regan had gotten this scar in his attempt of saving his life. To this day, he regretted that he had been so sick that day when the fire engulfed his chambers that he couldn’t even move from the bed let alone save himself.

It was because of him that Regan entered the fire and got this scar for a life on his face.

Yet he never said a word of complaint to him.

He could never forgive himself for whatever happened that day. To him, Regan was his first and foremost priority.

He just wanted a happy and peaceful life for his brother even if for that he would have to give his own life. Rex wouldn’t hesitate in doing that.

So when Regan nodded his head reluctantly, Rex was relieved.

However, there was another matter pending at hand and this was regarding the situation at the border.

"They have sensed some movement, Regan. His Majesty wants us to go there and ensure that everything is fine. It is possible that, in this time, William gathered some men and is preparing for an attack."

William was the crown prince of Zamorin.

While invading Zamorin’s capital city after defeating their troops, they have been able to destroy almost each and every threat but William was still able to escape from them.

This was also the reason that even if Rex wanted, he couldn’t trust Evelyn. Since William was still alive, there was a high chance that he would not sit silently.

He would certainly plan something and try to harm either Alfaros or his brother or maybe both.

And Evelyn could be a tool he was using for doing that.

However, looking at Regan’s expressionless face who didn’t seem to care about whatever he was saying, Rex frowned deeply and said

"Regan, we can’t put aside our responsibilities. We need to go there."

But in response, Regan shook his head and said

"We are not his only sons. Why doesn’t he send others this time?"

Rex was surprised for a moment before he thought over Regan’s words. Realization dawned on him suddenly as he asked

"Do you doubt that ...Rafael was behind this attack?"

Otherwise, why was he suddenly talking like this?

Regan’s eyes went colder when he heard this and Rex didn’t need any answer. Actually, it was possible.

Regan didn’t know but he knew that his father had started talking with a few ministers about his desire for Regan to succeed him. It was possible that it irked Rafael and he tried this stupid act.

But they still needed to go to the border.

"It is you that he put his hopes on, Regan, and you and I both know whys of it?"

Rex said seriously

It was only because Derrick wanted Regan to ascend the throne after him and that’s why he was Regan every chance of proving his abilities.
