Chapter 245: Sacrifices

Regan couldn’t kill William because he could see that William was not lying.

Hence, he tied William s hands and dragged him outside the tent to the other side of the border. Pushing him inside his own tent, he asked William angrily.

"Now tell me everything."

William however merely smiled and said

"I will tell you but you need to promise me that you will leave me alive."

Regan’s eyes shone with coldness.

The next moment, he punched William furiously and said

"You should know that you are not one who can bargain right now."

However, William kept his mouth shut.

Just when Regan was going to punch him again, Elias came running inside the tent and said

"Your Highness...I received a letter from Elliot. The letter is written a few days back only."

"What is inside the letter?"

Regan asked impatiently. From Elias’ expression, he was not having a good feeling.

"Your Highness...the Royal City is under the control of Prince Raphael right now. Her Highness was called to the Royal Palace a few days back and she didn’t return after that. However, a few days back, Prince Raphael announced that Her Highness took His Majesty away with her own people. Your Highness has also been charged with an offence of rebelling because of this. Prince Raphael claims that Her Highness is helping Your Highness by removing His Majesty so that Your Highness can gain the throne."

Regan exhaled out sharply and wiped his face with his hands.

"We are leaving right now. Make arrangements."

Elias could see that his master was very angry so he didn’t dare to ask any question and silently went to do what was being asked.

On the other hand, Regan turned to look at William who was smirking while looking at him. Regan felt so angry with his smirk that he punched him straight on his face.

The next moment, William was lying on the floor fully unconscious.

Regan didn’t go to the Royal City. Royal City was more far away. Instead, he decided to go to Mazic. Hence, on the fifth day of long journey, he was standing at the border of Mazic.

Wildon came to greet him immediately and said

"Your Highness is here."

Regan merely nodded his head. His heart was full of worry for Evelyn but he didn’t forget to tell Wildon.

"Guard the city gates carefully. We might face an attack."

If Raphael could spread the rumor that Regan was rebelling then he might attack Mazic in the pretence of capturing him.

Wildon’s face went sombre when he heard this and he nodded his head immediately.

"Your Highness need not worry. We will protect Your Highness and Her Highness until our last breath."

Regan paused when he heard Wildon’s words and asked immediately

"What do you mean? Is Evelyn here?"

His eyes were full of hope. In the past four days, he had been wondering where Evelyn might be. However, he couldn’t really find an answer. If she was able to get out of the Royal Palace as well as Royal City, then she might be on her way.

Regan was actually planning to go all the way to Royal City and look everywhere to find Evelyn.

But Wildon’s words indicated something else.

"Yes, Her Highness reached here with His Majesty two days ago only."

Regan’s eyes flashed with relief when he heard that and without thinking anything, he moved his horse inside the city.

He covered the distance of an hour in half an hour only. As soon as the horse reached the castle, he got down before the horse could even stop completely and strode inside the castle.

The guards greeted but he didn’t pay attention. If he had then Regan would have noticed the grim atmosphere inside the castle.

He reached inside his chambers hoping to find Evelyn there but when he didn’t find her there, he frowned deeply.

Did she stay in some other chambers?

Regan frown went deeper when he concluded this. He exited his chambers and came across Martha.

"Martha, where is Evelyn?"

He asked immediately.

Martha also had a very hesitant expression on her face as she looked at Regan. She opened her mouth to say something but before she could do so, Derrick came there and called out Regan.

"Regan!"

Regan looked at Derrick and his face went emotionless before he looked at Martha again.

"I asked you something Martha."

Martha sighed as if she didn’t know how she should answer the question. In the end, she could only open her mouth and say

"I don’t know, Your Highness."

Regan’s face went cold again when he heard the answer.

"What do you mean by that?"

He asked Martha in a cold voice.

"Did she not come here? Don’t lie. The guards on the border told me that Evelyn came here."

"She did."

This time it was Derrick who answered Regan.

"She came here with me."

Regan had to look at Derrick now even if he didn’t want to because Martha was not giving him answers.

"She disappeared suddenly."

Derrick continued.

"I have investigated. The last time...everyone saw her was with Rex. Even Rex had not been seen after that."

Derrick’s face was emotionless when he finished his words while Regan’s eyes were filled with confusion.

"Regan! I doubt that Rex is betraying you for the throne."

"Don’t spout rubbish!"

Regan said immediately. Rex was his elder brother. Evelyn and Rex were his only family in this world and Regan could never hear anything against them.

"Rex would never betray me for such a useless thing."

Regan said harshly without respecting Derrick as a king or as his father.

Derrick shook his head in helplessness.

"You don’t know anything Regan. At such times, anyone can turn against you. You don’t know but I have seen my own brothers turning against me for the throne. The one who adored me greatly was ready to kill for the throne you consider useless. The power can blind anyone’s eyes with greed."

"But not my brother’s."

Regan said firmly.

He knew why Derrick couldn’t trust anyone. He knew what he had faced at the time of ascension. But Regan could never doubt Rex in the same way.

Derrick wanted to speak more but Regan didn’t let him. He looked at Martha and ordered coldly.

"Ask all the servants, guards and maids to gather in the garden. I will find out what happened here. Rex must have some reason behind his actions."

Regan said with so much conviction that even Martha nodded her head with teary eyes. Only she knew how depressed she felt when Derrick had concluded yesterday that Rex took away Evelyn and was betraying Regan.

Not only she but the whole city treasured the two princes and the brotherhood between them.

Within a few moments, everyone was gathered inside the garden.

Regan asked everyone about Evelyn and Rex. However, half an hour later, he could gather the information that he knew already.

Everyone had seen Evelyn with Rex last time and after that they didn’t see her any longer.

Then where did she go? And where did Rex go?

Regan dismissed the servants, maids and guards. Soon, Derrick walked to him and said

"Regan, we need to go to Royal City. Raphael is taking everything under his control."

Derrick knew that he might be selfish to say such words but he was thinking as the King of Alfaros. He had also started to care for Evelyn in the past few days but as a King, he had some priorities which couldn’t be kept aside for anyone.

However, Regan looked at him coldly and said calmly

"The army is here. You can take it with you and go there. I won’t go anywhere before finding my brother and wife and ensuring their safety."

Finishing his words, he walked away from there.

He had sacrificed enough for this Empire. He was not going to do so any longer.
