Chapter 211: Arthur Is Here
Chapter 211: Arthur Is Here
The trembling of Evelyn’s shoulders only increased as she laid her head on his chest and it made him feel worse.
"Sshh...I was too rude. Forgive me, Evelyn. I shouldn’t have talked to you like that."
Evelyn didn’t say anything in response. She didn’t even let Regan see her face when he tried to look at her to wipe her tears.
So Regan could only let her cry as he patted her back and whispered in her ears how sorry he was.
When Evelyn’s trembling ceased finally, he held her shoulders trying to pull her away slightly. Evelyn let him but the next moment, she turned away from him. He could see from her movement that she was wiping her face with the handkerchief she carried in her sleeve.
But it hurt Regan that she didn’t feel comfortable enough to show him her tears. It was not like in the past.
Was it because of what he said?
His face turned emotionless as he suddenly held Evelyn’s shoulder and turned her around. He could see that she was surprised but he didn’t care as he took the handkerchief from her hands and wiped her tears.
Her eyes were red and swollen now.
As Regan helped her, Evelyn suddenly held his hand and said
"Your Highness should go and make arrangements to leave. I am alright."
Evelyn’s whispered in a choked voice.
Regan pretended as if he didn’t hear her and said gently
"Evelyn, I don’t want you to go with me. Life at the border is very uncomfortable. We went months ago when it was still a little warm but around this time, it will be very cold. Sometimes the food will be hard to even chew for a person who is not trained enough to eat it. And it is also not safe for you. You will feel alone there."
He was trying to make her understand like a child but Evelyn seemed to be persistent as she whispered a moment later.
"I will not go anywhere. I will stay inside the tent the whole day ...waiting for Your Highness. And ...Your Highness doesn’t need to worry. I have lived a more uncomfortable life before when I was a slave so it won’t matter if I stay there."
Regan sighed and shook his head. He closed his eyes and gathered all his patience and tried again.
"Evelyn, you don’t know what the battlefield is like. During the war, anything can happen. You might think that by staying in a tent all day you will stay safe but it is not true. It might be possible that enemy soldiers attack the tents and take you hostage. They can also use you against me and I would never want that."
Evelyn’s eyes were wide when she heard everything. She had never thought that something like that could also happen.
She shook her head as if she was trying to say that even she wouldn’t want that. She wanted to help the prince and not become an obstacle for him.
Regan caressed the skin under her eyes which was swollen and whispered
"You might have suffered in the past, Evelyn ...But I was not there at that time. I can’t do anything about the past but in your present, I will never let you suffer. I wish to provide you with all the comforts you have been deprived of. I want you to rule by my side as my princess consort."
"But I wish to help Your Highness as well."
Evelyn whispered with teary eyes. She felt incompetent as a princess consort as she couldn’t help Regan in any way.
However, Regan cupped her cheeks and made her look at him when her eyes started to look at the ground in discouragement.
"Stay here. Take care of yourself and this Palace. Wait for me to come. That will allow me to fight there with an assurance that my wife is safe here, Evelyn. I just want this from you. Will you do that for me?"
Evelyn’s lips trembled but she nodded her head.
Regan sighed in relief. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. Evelyn closed her eyes and relished the touch.
When he leaned away, she couldn’t help but say what had been inside her heart since a few moments.
"I heard that it was Arthur who told His Majesty about the attack. Your Highness, don’t you think that it can be a ploy as well?"
Regan nodded his head as his face turned somber.
"I thought about this. If he is thinking that by sending me away, he can do whatever he wants here then he is wrong. Don’t worry, he won’t be able to do anything."
Evelyn frowned in confusion as she didn’t understand what Regan did to stop Arthur.
However, before she could ask him, a servant came there. Seeing Evelyn in Regan’s arms, his eyes first went wide before he immediately lowered his head.
Evelyn immediately stepped away from Regan in embarrassment and heard the servant say
"Apologies for interrupting Your Highness but Sir Arthur from Royal Palace is here and His Highness, Prince Rex called you immediately."
Evelyn stiffened completely when she heard the servant and looked at Regan with shock-filled eyes as she whispered
"He...what is he doing here?"
Regan dismissed the servants and dragged Evelyn closer to himself. He didn’t like it at all when she pulled herself away. However, he also that their closeness made her feel embarrassed in front of others. At least, she didn’t feel uncomfortable when they were alone.
But the fact that he was soon going to leave and the timing of his return was not predictable made it unbearable for him to stay away.
Seeing the fear in her eyes, he clicked his tongue and said
"Don’t fear him. He can’t do anything. I wrote a letter to His Majesty and asked him to send that man with me to the battlefield. After all...who can know William’s war strategies more than him so he will be a great help to us."
Evelyn blinked as she looked at Regan.
Realization dawned on her slowly. Regan’s words carried a double meaning.
If Arthur was thinking that by sending Rex and Regan away, he could do anything then he was wrong.
Because Regan was not going to let him stay here and plan something in his absence.
