Chapter 210: The Argument

Chapter 210: The Argument

With a completely surprised expression on his face, Rex walked to stand beside Elias. Except for him, there were standing three more people there who had been given the responsibility to protect Evelyn by Regan recently.

"What is going on here?"

Rex asked Elias in a whisper who had a helpless expression on his face. The three people standing beside Rex and Elias didn’t look any different.

Rex raised his eyebrows in surprise and his attention was soon gained by the two people arguing in the middle of the hall.

"Don’t be stubborn, Evelyn. You are not going anywhere. Stay here and wait for the war to end."

Regan said firmly. He even had this cold expression on his face which would stop anyone from saying another word in front of him. In the past, it always worked. It worked for Evelyn as well.

But today Evelyn seemed to have eaten something special.

He saw as she squared her shoulders clearly looking nervous yet she was determined and then said

"I am going with Your Highness. I have also learned many things now. Even if Your Highness doesn’t wish to send me to the battlefield, I can still help in many things. Even Dan is going there...how can I stay here and idle around."

Regan never wanted to hurt Evelyn but in the heat of an argument, he still blurted out in a cold and sharp voice which made Evelyn flinch.

"Is that so? What will you do then? Do you know how to heal people like Dan? Do you know how to fight on the battlefield like Elias? And don’t even say that you do know just after the training of one month. Do you think that it is that easy? Even soldiers who have been fighting for years don’t have the security of their life and you think that you are eligible to fight on that gruesome battlefield just after a month’s training. Then pray tell me what will you do there except make me worry about you all the time?"

Evelyn opened her mouth but not a single word came out.

Regan’s voice was so cold and sharp that she felt blank for a moment and when she registered his words, she suddenly wondered if she was that useless.

Indeed, she couldn’t do anything to help him. She was such a useless burden on him.

Embarrassment filled her heart suddenly and her head lowered in shame.

The little bit of pride that she was left with gathered it and then turned around to leave. It was only then Regan realized that he perhaps said too much.

As the previous frustration was wiped away, the guilt washed over his heart and he wiped his face because of the new round of frustration.

He cursed loudly as his shoulders dropped. Remembering the hurt in her green eyes before she turned around, he felt as if something was stabbing his heart continuously.

"It’s alright."

A hand suddenly fell on his shoulder and Regan raised his head to look at Rex. Rex had a smile on his lips as he said

"You are worried about her but you are unable to make her understand that, Regan. Go and explain everything to her calmly."

Regan sighed and nodded his head slowly. But before he left, he looked at Rex and said

"Gather the soldiers and see the things once again though I have checked everything once. Also...I sent a letter to Royal Palace."

Finishing his words, Regan finally left to talk to Evelyn.

.

Regan was full of panic when he didn’t find Evelyn in their room. He went to the kitchen, to the servant quarters thinking that she might be assigning work to the servants. But in the end, he found her in the garden where she was practicing with a sword.

He stood a few steps away as he watched her moves which clearly reflected her anger, her frustration, and her helplessness.

As much as Regan was distressed, he felt amused.

This was the first time he was seeing this side of Evelyn. Before this, he had not seen her so angry and frustrated.

Could he finally assure himself that she was stepping out of her past shadows of slavery where she had to lower her head every time and accept everything silently?

This time, she questioned his decision and expressed her own wish. As much as he liked it, he wishes that the circumstances were different where he could give her what she wanted.

But this time, he couldn’t do so.

He couldn’t let Evelyn accompany him to the border regardless of how much she wished to do so.

She stopped finally, breathing harshly as she lowered her head and looked at the ground.

He walked towards her, taking her by surprise when he suddenly took her arm and put it on his shoulder. She struggled when he started messaging the muscles but Regan held her arm firmly and looked at her with a determined expression on his face which indicated that he was not going to leave her.

Evelyn stared at him or more like glared but Regan smiled in return.

Seeing her mouth puffing up with all the anger she was holding, Regan had to bite his cheeks to stop the laughter that was threatening to bubble out of his mouth.

Evelyn lowered her head silently as he continued messaging her arm gently and then took the other after a few moments.

"Are you angry at me?"

He asked after a few moments of silence.

However, what he heard in response was the sound of sniffing.

Regan stiffened as he turned his head slightly to look at Evelyn. Her shoulders were trembling slightly and her head was lowered.

"Are you crying?"

He whispered in a soft voice that was filled with pain.

All he received in answer was another sniff.

Regan sighed as he put down Evelyn’s arm from his shoulders and then pulled her towards himself through the same.

His arms went around her waist and he held her tightly closer to himself.

It hurt his heart that she was crying and the fact that she was crying because of him made it only worse.
