Chapter 188: The Greed
Chapter 188: The Greed
There was a kind of similarity and yet a huge difference in the intensity of Arthur and Regan’s eyes. Evelyn wondered suddenly as she looked at Arthur.
Arthur’s eyes made her feel scared. They made her want to run far away from him. They made her feel suffocated to the extent that she found it difficult to breathe.
On the other hand, when Regan looked at her with the same intensity, Evelyn found herself lost in that intensity. She was always left breathless but she didn’t wish to look away. She felt as if she was the most precious to the owner of those eyes...the truth might be whatever.
But they were like a soothing balm on the sufferings of her past.
Evelyn came out of her trance when Regan squeezed her arm gently through which she was holding his arm. She immediately looked away from him.
Again, a kind of headache formed suddenly as soon as she looked away from him but fortunately, it was only momentarily.
"Are you alright?"
She raised her head and looked into Regan’s concern-filled eyes. And with that, she could see the anger flickering in his eyes. She knew very well that it was not she towards whom that anger was targeted. The fears that were starting to cover her heart suddenly reduced to a great extent.
"Yes, Your Highness."
She whispered softly.
Regan was relieved to hear that. Still, he squeezed Evelyn’s hand softly as he said
"Don’t worry, you are safe here. Elias would always be around to protect you, even if I had to leave." Which was difficult.
Regan didn’t say it but he didn’t wish to leave Evelyn’s side knowing that Arthur was present in the same banquet hall.
Not only because Evelyn was afraid of him, but it was also because he didn’t believe Arthur at all. The man might have already planned something for the occasion.
He didn’t even understand why he was invited to the banquet. However, Regan was aware that the people were too far away to understand the threat Arthur provided the Alfaros with.
Regan’s words made Evelyn relieved and she nodded her head with a smile on her lips.
She couldn’t look scared today. She was here as a princess consort. She was supposed to look calm yet happy, dignified yet polite.
Maintaining a polite smile on her lips, Evelyn further stepped inside the hall with Regan.
"We will need to see His Majesty first."
Regan told her and Evelyn nodded her head lightly. Finishing his words, Regan moved towards the largest chair placed in the center of the hall where he could see his father seated.
The ministers were already surrounding the chair. It made Regan scoff in disgust.
They couldn’t leave even today to curry the favor.
"Greetings, Your Majesty."
Regan said coldly when he approached Derrick. Immediately, all the ministers moved away and turned to look at him and Evelyn.
Derrick also looked toward his son and then his eyes went to Evelyn. His eyes though flashed with surprise when he saw how Evelyn looked at him without moving her eyes away.
It was slightly hard to believe that she was the same slave girl who couldn’t raise her head inside Royal Court that day.
Her gaze however didn’t hold anything malicious, but only politeness and respect.
"Greetings, Your Majesty."
Evelyn greeted Derrick softly.
No one could see but she was actually sweating with nervousness. Her hand had almost clenched Regan’s clothes through the arm she was holding.
Derrick only grunted in acknowledgment thinking that Lady Irwin did a good job. On the other hand, Evelyn relaxed as if she had passed the most difficult exam of her life.
After this, Derrick no longer looked at Evelyn and instead looked at Regan as he said
"Regan, why don’t you move to your Palace that is inside Royal Palace?"
Regan frowned.
The Palace Regan lived in was actually bought by him and Rex together and it didn’t lack anything. So Regan didn’t see any point in leaving it.
However, his eyes moved toward certain someone and they went deathly cold when he realized how the man was still staring at his wife.
Regan suddenly left Evelyn’s arm and possessively held Evelyn’s waist. He smirked when he saw the rage flickering in Arthur’s eyes at his move.
Good. Arthur could look at him as much as he wanted. But his eyes should be away from Evelyn.
Looking back at his father, Regan said coldly
"I would have to decline the offer, Your Majesty. There are some people present in this Palace who I don’t wish to encounter every day."
Almost everyone present and who heard Regan knew who exactly he was talking about.
Derrick sighed when he heard this. Though he wished to see Regan every day, he knew that he couldn’t force his son.
He also couldn’t throw Arthur out of Royal Palace and Arthur needed to reach William so he left this topic here only.
Amidst the silent people, one of the ministers suddenly smiled and asked Regan
"Your Highness, I hope that my daughter didn’t give you any kind of trouble."
Regan, however, frowned in front of the Minister’s enthusiasm and asked coldly
"Who are you?"
The minister’s smile stiffened for a moment before he composed himself and said
"My bad. I should have first introduced myself. Apologies, Your Highness. I am Minister Rowan. Laurel had been residing in your Palace as Lady Irwin’s assistant. She is my daughter."
The other ministers looked at Minister Rowan with resentment. Who would not cherish such an opportunity?
Who would not want their daughter to be married to Regan? After all, Regan was the most suitable candidate as the next Emperor in King’s eyes.
If Minister Rowan’s daughter, Laurel really managed to win Regan’s heart then it meant that she would be the future queen if Regan ascended the throne.
And Minister Rowan’s calm would only prosper after that. Minister Rowan was already very arrogant because he was slightly close to the King. If his daughter became Queen, then he would look down on everyone in Alfaros.
The ministers felt as if something was stuck in their throats when they thought about all this.
