Chapter 141: Gianna Is Selfish

Inside the dining room, Oliver told his father that Evelyn’s fever was lower now. Cooper was relieved to hear this.

"She must be scared after seeing that scene yesterday."

Cooper sighed as he had his lunch and said.

Oliver’s hand stopped and he fell silent. Indeed, Evelyn’s fever was all of a sudden. It must be because she was very scared after yesterday’s incident.

Oliver frowned. Arthur’s image flashed in his eyes again. But he tried his best to dismiss it. Regardless of what Arthur thought about him, Oliver still loved him as his brother and somewhere he had always blamed himself because of the treatment meted out to Arthur by his parents.

Somewhere he held himself responsible for everything.

Perhaps this was the reason that even though a huge part of Oliver’s mind kept screaming that it was Arthur’s hand in killing the dog, he continued to ignore it.

Perhaps he should not have brought that puppy in the first place. Oliver thought inside his heart.

Because of all these thoughts, he didn’t eat much for lunch and left the dining room. When Gianna saw that his plate was still filled with food, she was worried and wanted to go to his room to feed him more.

However, Cooper stopped him and said

"Let him be. He must be worried about Evelyn."

Cooper smiled when he said this. He had been apprehensive before regarding his wife’s decision of marrying Oliver and Evelyn. However, after seeing Oliver’s care for Evelyn, he was sure that Oliver liked Evelyn. This made him feel that they didn’t do any mistakes.

Evelyn and Oliver would be very happy in their marriage in the future.

However, Gianna frowned on being stopped and said

"I don’t want him to be worried about anything. Why is he worried now? Isn’t Evelyn fine?"

Gianna felt very unhappy. A part of her heart was unhappy as a mother. Perhaps she couldn’t bear that now her son would have another woman to worry about except her mother.

And another part didn’t like it because she had brought Evelyn to her house to make Oliver’s life easy and not to let him worry about her.

Cooper could understand the first reason without her saying anything else but he was unaware of the second reason all the while.

Still, he didn’t let his wife go to his son’s room.

It was just at that moment that Arthur entered the dining room. Gianna came out of her thoughts and looked at him as he walked towards the table.

As soon as he sat, she said to him.

"Arthur, I hope you understood what I told you in the morning. You need to keep a distance from Evelyn now. She is your brother’s wife and the three of you are now growing up slowly and slowly."

Arthur raised his head and stared at his mother without saying anything. In the morning, Gianna had not said anything seeing his stare but at this moment, she frowned deeply and said

"Why are you looking at me like that? I am your mother. I am teaching you something. You need to be responsive. Do you understand or not?"

However, Arthur stayed silent.

Cooper could see that his wife was getting angry. To avoid any other fight between mother and son, he held Gianna’s arm and said gently

"I will talk to him. You can go to your room and rest for some time. You must be tired after making the lunch."

Gianna was indeed tired. She had been doing all the chores since morning. Today, Evelyn was not there to help her.

So she frowned looking at her son for one last time and then went to her room.

Cooper sighed in relief and looked at his youngest son who was having his meal.

"Arthur, why do you behave like that with your mother? You know she gets angry. When she was asking you something, you could have said yes."

Arthur raised his head to look at his father when he heard his words and said calmly

"I won’t say ’yes’, Father. Because I am not going to stay away from Evelyn."

Cooper’s mind went blank for a moment when he heard his son’s words but the next moment, he laughed as he interpreted it differently.

"Arthur, I know you had been her very good friend. But now she is your brother’s wife. We are not asking you to completely stop talking to her. You just need to maintain some distance...the distance which is supposed to be maintained between men and women. Do you understand my son?"

Cooper talked to his youngest son very patiently.

He was aware that this son of his had not been treated very best by Gianna. Actually, Gianna had never wanted a second child.

They already had a son and Gianna thought that it was enough. She wished that they could use all the resources they had on that only son’s future.

However, when she was pregnant, Cooper couldn’t help but want to keep the child. Somewhere Cooper regretted it sometimes when he would notice Gianna’s partiality towards Arthur.

However, he had tried many times to make Gianna understand. She would never listen to him in this matter.

In the end, he could only try on his own to make his youngest son feel that this was his family and everyone loved him.

Arthur stayed silent for some time after Cooper finished. Just when Cooper was going to continue, he suddenly raised his head and asked

"Father, is Oliver and Evelyn’s marriage legal? She is just eight years old. Her consent can’t be held valid according to her age, right?"

Cooper was slightly startled when he heard the question. He was blank for a moment before he answered

"No, it’s legal. Her consent is valid. We have betrothal papers signed by her parents. It is because of those papers only that we were able to bring Evelyn to our home."

Arthur fell silent when he heard this.

However, Cooper continued to speak with a sigh.

"When your brother was in an accident and we got to know that he won’t be able to walk again, your mother and I had actually decided that we will go to Evelyn’s parents and break this marriage which was to happen in the future. However, when we reached there...your mother suddenly changed her mind."

Arthur put down the spoon in his hands and stared at his father when he heard this.

"So that Oliver could have a maid to take care of him in the future?"

Arthur asked out aloud making Cooper look at him with shock-filled eyes. Cooper stared at his son and said in a reprimanding voice.

"What rubbish you are spouting Arthur? Evelyn’s uncle and Aunt didn’t behave with her like a family. Your mother couldn’t see this. That’s why she decided to bring her here."

However, When Cooper said these words, he avoided looking into his son’s eyes.

And Arthur had already got his answer.

After all, who knew his mother better than him?
