Chapter 135: Evelyn Agrees
Chapter 135: Evelyn Agrees
In the early morning, Gianna unlocked the door of Evelyn’s room. It had been three years but she would still lock the door of Evelyn’s room before sleeping.
Gianna remembered that Evelyn had once woken up at night but she couldn’t open the door so she had asked her about that. At that time, she had lied to the girl that she did the same with Oliver and Arthur as the children usually had the habit of walking when they sleep.
Though Evelyn was sure that she didn’t have any such habit, she was touched by Gianna’s concern and didn’t stop her.
In her eyes, Gianna had never considered her any less than Oliver and Arthur. If only she knew...
Stepping inside the room, Gianna saw that Evelyn was already awake and seated on the bed.
"Mother..."
Gianna smiled as she walked towards the bed and sat beside Evelyn. She stroked Evelyn’s head and said
"Mother wanted to talk to you about something."
Evelyn’s attention was solely focused on her and she asked
"What is it, Mother?"
Gianna was silent for a moment as she maintained her smile. She seemed to be arranging her words before she spoke
"I want you and Oliver to marry in a few days."
Evelyn blinked. She seemed to have heard something like this yesterday as well but her reaction was the same as yesterday.
"What is marriage, Mother?"
Gianna continued to smile as she told Evelyn.
"Marriage...if you will marry Oliver then you wouldn’t have to leave this house ever. Even after my and Cooper’s death, you will stay with Oliver. In other words, for your whole life, you will stay with Oliver and both of you will take care of each other. Just like how I and your father take care of each other."
The confusion in Evelyn’s eyes was replaced by somewhat realization. She understood but only a little bit.
Like Mother and Father...that would not make any difference, right?
"But I and Oliver already take care of each other."
Oliver was so gentle to her. He would always solve her problems and he would also bring her different kinds of snacks whenever he went out.
Evelyn rarely stepped out of the house and she never complained about it. She liked to stay at home as Oliver and Arthur would already bring things for her from outside.
"Yes, so it would not change anything."
Gianna just confirmed Evelyn’s innocent thoughts in her own way.
"Will you listen to me and go with Oliver to take the marriage certificate?"
Evelyn was silent but when she saw Gianna’s smile, she also smiled and nodded her head. Gianna was relieved. She patted Evelyn’s head again before she left the room.
Hence during breakfast, Gianna announced
"One the first day of the next week, Oliver and Evelyn would go and get married legally."
There was a bright smile on Gianna’s face when she announced this news. However, her words brought out different kinds of reactions from different people.
Oliver looked at his mother and then at Evelyn wondering if his mother even talked to Evelyn first or not. Although he agreed, he had not expected that his mother was in so much hurry.
Cooper was shocked because he had thought that he had already postponed the matter.
While Arthur...his head was lowered and no one could see his knuckles turning white as he gripped the table in a hard and firm grip.
He raised his head slightly and his cold eyes went to Evelyn. Seeing her smiling softly while looking at his mother, Arthur felt slightly calm.
But the innocence in her eyes stirred something inside him.
She was innocent...too innocent for these people. He needed to protect her.
After breakfast Cooper had a long talk with his wife. Gianna assured him again and again that she had already talked with Oliver.
Hearing this, Cooper still called Oliver to his room and had a talk with his son.
His son was going to give such an important exam soon. He didn’t want anything to disturb him mentally that would become the reason behind his not performing well.
"I think Mother is right, Father."
Oliver said.
"It would be good if I married Evelyn early. That way, we will get used to each other."
The whole night, Oliver had been thinking about this. He knew that the disability of his legs was a huge problem and Evelyn might start to dislike him in the future when she would understand things.
However, he could at least try once.
Perhaps if they married early, Evelyn would start to love him and she would not mind his disabled legs.
It was the same Oliver who had been thinking of letting go of Evelyn if she would refuse to marry him in the future.
However, he was far away to realize that. Cooper saw that his son didn’t have any problem so he also agreed.
The three of them had long forgotten to think about Evelyn’s life.
However, as soon as Oliver stepped inside his room, the door of his room opened and Arthur stepped inside.
Oliver was surprised because it was very rare for Arthur to come inside his room. It only happened when Evelyn was here. A moment later, he smiled and was about to ask him if he needed some kind of help but Arthur spoke up coldly before he could say anything.
"You can’t marry her."
Oliver frowned. He obviously understood that Arthur was talking about Evelyn but why he was saying this?
"Arthur...what are you saying? Why can’t I marry her? Evelyn is my betrothed."
"That was when you were still able to walk."
Disregarding the fact that they were real brothers. Arthur attacked Oliver where it hurt the latter the most.
Indeed, Evelyn’s mother and father signed the betrothal agreement when he was still fine. Which parents would still marry their daughter to a disabled person?
Still, Oliver shook his head and said
"Evelyn...she doesn’t have anyone. I will love her, take care of her. I will never let any harm come to her."
Arthur’s eyes went colder when he heard Oliver’s words. He suddenly smiled coldly as he asked
"Do you think that you are the only one who can give her all this?"
