Chapter 126: The Past(7)
It was indeed night by the time they reached the village.
The carriage stopped and Cooper first got down from the carriage. He helped his wife in getting down who then helped Evelyn.
Cooper went to pay the coach and Gianna and Evelyn were waiting for him.
Evelyn looked at the people who were passing by.
After Cooper returned, they started to walk toward their home. But on the way, many people who were returning from their work looked at Gianna and Cooper with curiosity because they saw a young girl with them.
But they didn’t pry much.
However, not everyone was the same.
A woman still stopped Gianna and asked
"Gianna, who is this girl?"
Gianna was silent for a moment before she answered.
"This is the girl I have chosen for my son."
Gianna knew that she would not be able to hide for long from the village people so it was better to be truthful from the start.
Anyway, she didn’t any crime. She had betrothal paper signed by Layla. Her family was just claiming what was theirs.
The woman raised her eyebrow in surprise when she heard this and asked
"Which son? Eldest or youngest?"
"Eldest."
The woman was silent for some time. She looked at Evelyn again who was looking around very curiously.
The girl looked beautiful. Though she was very thin, it could be seen that once stuffed up, she would grow up very beautiful.
Gianna brought such a beautiful girl from her eldest son. But her son...
"I will leave now. My children are waiting at home.
Gianna could guess what was going on inside the woman’s mind. She forced a smile on her lips and left from there with her husband.
She knew that she would receive such looks from the village people for quite some time now.
However, she was ready.
As long as she could tie Evelyn to her eldest son for the rest of her life, Gianna was ready to face anything.
She didn’t care if anyone said that she was being very cruel to Evelyn who was just a child and didn’t know anything.
Cooper knew that his wife was upset.
He only held her hand as they walked to their home.
Gianna was walking very fast and Cooper could accommodate her pace but Evelyn was just a child and her short legs were starting to ache.
She was afraid that she would fall down as her hand was held by Gianna.
Fortunately, they reached home soon.
Cooper knocked on the door and shouted for his son to open the door.
Evelyn looked at the closed door and then at the home.
It was not a hut.
It was a home ...which was not made of mud. In fact, it seemed to be more solid and it was larger than her uncle and aunt’s hut which was the largest in their tribe.
Remembering her tribe, Evelyn suddenly felt like crying.
There was a tingling feeling in her nose and her eyes started to fill up with tears.
Would anyone remember her?
At least, Uncle Blacksmith should remember her. Just when Evelyn was lost in her own thoughts, the door opened and she saw a boy taller than her standing at the door.
The boy also glanced at her in confusion but stepped aside when he saw that his father and mother needed to get inside.
His eyes were filled with more confusion when his mother entered the house with the young girl.
Gianna went inside the house with her husband and Evelyn.
She sat on a small dining table and filled a glass of water for her and her husband. After that, without looking at her son she asked
"Where is Oliver?"
The boy who was standing inside the hall and looking at the silent girl up till now heard his mother’s question.
His lips were pressed in a thin line and he answered
"Inside his room."
Gianna nodded her head and asked
"Did you two have your lunch?"
Arthur was silent for a moment before he said
"I did."
Gianna frowned when she heard this and suddenly stood up from the chair she was seated on. Looking at her youngest son, she asked again.
"What about your brother?"
Arthur’s lips were again pressed in a thin line and he answered a moment later.
"He didn’t."
Gianna’s face went black when she heard this. She walked closer to him and said sharply.
"I had clearly told you to make sure that Oliver has his lunch. Why did you not do it?"
Evelyn was silently standing in a corner after entering the house. Seeing Gianna so angry, she was scared and shrunk herself against the wall.
Her eyes were wide with shock and panic. She had not expected that Gianna could also get angry.
She actually felt worried for the boy who was standing in front of her.
Arthur stared at his mother and whispered
"I tried."
Gianna however didn’t seem to believe him and wanted to say more but Cooper saw the situation and said
"Gianna. Leave it. We should have dinner now."
Gianna however was very angry. She turned to look at her husband and said
"But he..."
However, Cooper interrupted her and said
"You are scaring the girl."
Gianna stopped speaking when she heard this and swiftly turned to look at the girl. Indeed, the girl’s green eyes were filled with fear.
She sighed as she realized that she had lost her calm. It had been like this since that incident. She would always stay worried about her eldest son.
But since she wanted Evelyn for her eldest son, she needed to take care of Evelyn as well...at least until Evelyn adjusts here.
Thinking this, Gianna smiled, quite forcefully, and said
"Evelyn, are you hungry?"
Evelyn was still scared. So she first shook her head in no fearing that she would be scolded if she said ’yes’.
Gianna sighed again but said softly
"I will go and prepare the dinner."
After saying this, she left for the kitchen.
Cooper knew that his wife was also tired so he decided to help her in whatever he could.
Evelyn was left inside the room with the boy. The boy glanced at her only once before he left the room indifferently.
Standing inside the room, Evelyn wondered what she should do.
