Chapter 122: The Past(3)

Gianna and Cooper didn’t know what May had in her mind. However, May was preparing well for what she had planned.

She left Gianna and Cooper inside her room and then went to the door of the hut. When she saw that her daughters were playing with children, she clicked her tongue and dragged them inside the house.

"Mother...what are you doing? We were playing."

The two girls were so annoyed that they shouted at their mother.

May immediately covered their mouths and indicated to them to stay silent. If Gianna heard their loud voices, she would never agree to betroth her sons to these girls.

"You girls...go to the kitchen immediately and when I call you come with water in your hands. Do you understand?"

The two girls were still very angry but when May said

"Mother will give you two candies if you did what Mother is saying."

The two girls grinned. Candies were rare things they received but they had tasted it before.

They almost drooled as they went to the kitchen eagerly.

Inside the kitchen, Evelyn was already done with the dishes and was now filling two glasses of water.

She remembered how a guest had come last time and her aunt had shouted at her when she didn’t bring water for a long time.

But May never ponder on how a five-year-old Evelyn could know about these norms! She had just got another opportunity to keep Evelyn hungry,

It was already a wonder how one-year-old Evelyn had managed to survive in this house after her parent’s death.

May’s two girls entered the kitchen and pushed Evelyn away. Evelyn who was pushed on the floor hissed as the skin of her knees was scratched against the floor.

She raised her head and looked at her two cousins picking the glasses of water which had been filled by her and smiling eagerly.

Looking at Evelyn, they smirked and said

"You wild seed...you wanted to get candies at our place. Hmph! As if we will let that happen."

The two girls wanted to bully Evelyn but when they heard their mother’s shout from the room, they didn’t waste their time on Evelyn and immediately went to the room with glasses of water.

Inside the room, May smiled widely when she saw her two daughters entering the room.

"Gianna, meet my daughters? Are not they very sensible? Seeing that you are here, they brought water for you. My intelligent girls..."

May stroked her daughters’ hair as she praised them.

Gianna frowned and looked at May. A moment later, her eyes suddenly flashed with understanding.

She understood what May was trying to do. She looked at May’s daughters and said calmly

"Yes, they are very sensible. However, May it is still Evelyn who is beautiful isn’t it?"

The smile on May’s lips instantly wavered when she heard these words.

But what Gianna said was the truth.

Layla was very beautiful and Silas was no less handsome. It was natural for Evelyn to look beautiful after having such parents.

Anyone looking at Evelyn could tell that she would grow up to be a beautiful woman. It was just that her body was very weak and she looked shorter than a child of her age should be because she was not given enough to eat as a child.

May was angry by Gianna’s words but she still maintained the smile on her lips as she still remembered her purpose.

However, her two girls were very angry when they heard someone else praising Evelyn and calling them ugly.

One of them even pointed her finger at Gianna’s face and said

"You b***h, it is you who is ugly."

Even though May’s two girls were older than Evelyn, they were still young. One of her girls was eight and the other was seven years old.

Such a young child was speaking like this....not only Gianna but even her husband Cooper was shocked.

Gianna soon composed herself and looked at May’s pale face who didn’t seem to know what she should say or do.

May took her own time to compose herself. She smiled nervously as she scolded her daughter a little and then looked at Gianna.

"Gianna, don’t mind them. They are not usually like this. I don’t know from where they have learned this. I think...they learnt from Evelyn..."

Since her daughters couldn’t get a good marriage, May wanted to spoil Evelyn’s future as well by badmouthing her. However, Gianna had already seen through her schemes and interrupted her

"May, I am here to talk about my son and Evelyn’s betrothal. Since Layla is not here. I assume that it is you and your husband who have taken her under your wings. Then I will just tell you. I am here to take Evelyn with me. I suppose that it would be good if the children get to know each other at a young age. That way, they wouldn’t find it difficult to adjust after they would marry."

Since the conflicted look on May’s face, Gianna continued softly

"I am sure if Layla had been here, she wouldn’t have refused me. But since she is not here, I would need to ask you and your husband. Though I don’t think you have any reason to refuse. You don’t seem to like Evelyn very much in your house after all."

May’s eyes went wide when she heard Gianna.

Indeed, she was thinking of any excuse using which she could refuse Gianna. She just didn’t want Evelyn to marry Gianna’s sons.

May couldn’t digest anything good happening to Evelyn ...something which her daughters were not getting.

Seeing that she was not speaking, Gianna’s lips were pressed in a thin line. She suddenly took a cloth bag from her husband’s lap and took out a paper from it.

"Here!"

She presented a paper to May who didn’t even know how to read and write.

"This is the betrothal papers. This has mine and Layla’s names in it. Since Evelyn’s parents are no longer alive, I and my husband are entitled to bring her with us. I hope that you are aware of the rules, May."

May swallowed the unhappiness as she looked at the paper and said unwillingly.

"Wait for my husband. I will need to talk to him."

Gianna nodded her head.

She didn’t have any problem with this. However, her husband Cooper was utterly confused by her actions.
