Chapter 123: The Past(4)

May’s two girls had long ago run out of the room to play because May refused to give them any candy.

After Gianna had expressed her intentions very clearly, May was not in any mood of entertaining her.

She didn’t think of any politeness as she laid down on the bed and closed her eyes to sleep even though Gianna and Cooper were still present in the room.

Gianna merely smiled as she was already aware of May’s behavior. Cooper, however, frowned in disgust as he looked at the fat woman’s back lying on the bed.

The woman was very greedy and rude in his eyes.

However, his attention soon went to his wife and he called her out.

"Gianna, why did you..."

Gianna indicated her husband to stay silent and Cooper stopped speaking.

After that, she held his hand and then walked out of the room with him. Before they even stepped outside the room, Evelyn who was hiding behind the wall ran away from there.

Once inside the kitchen, she leaned against the wall. Her big green eyes were wide with shock.

She heard everything just now.

She had been afraid that her two cousins would mess up so she followed them but stayed outside just to ensure that they would not do anything wrong. Otherwise, regardless of whose fault it had been, she would have been punished.

She had wanted to leave when she had seen her two cousins running out of the room but she couldn’t because she had heard that Aunt praising her.

There was no doubt that Evelyn felt shy when she heard that Aunt calling her beautiful.

It was not every day that someone praised Evelyn. In fact, no one had ever praised her.

Was she really beautiful? Evelyn gad wondered.

However, she couldn’t think about it for more time as she heard that Aunt talking about the things she was not aware of.

Evelyn stared at the wall in front of her with blank eyes. She was confused but also scared.

Would that Aunt take her away? Does she have a husband at such a young age?

She didn’t know if it was a good thing or a bad thing. She didn’t know if leaving her tribe and her uncle’s home was good or bad.

She didn’t know anything.

On the other hand, in a silent corner of the house, Gianna and Cooper were talking to each other.

Cooper had a deep frown on his forehead as he looked at his wife and asked

"Gianna, we had come here to cancel the betrothal. Why did you say that we are going to take Evelyn away with us?"

Cooper had never had any problem when his wife had told her that she had betrothed their elder’s son to the daughter of her best friend who lived in the tribe. He believed in his wife’s choice.

However, the recent circumstances forced them to cancel this betrothal.

"Talk in low voice."

Gianna said in a whisper as she looked around checking if anyone heard them. When she saw that no one was really around, she was relieved and said to her husband

"What I am doing is good, Cooper. Believe me. We will take Evelyn away with us...to our village."

"But we should at least tell them that ..."

Cooper tried to say something but Gianna held his hand to stop him from speaking. Her eyes were suddenly filled with tears as she said

"Cooper, please. Believe me. Let me do what I am doing. And can’t you see that they are also not treating Evelyn too nicely."

Gianna paused for a moment before she breathed deeply and then continued

"If Layla had been alive then I would have canceled this betrothal. I would have never thought about doing this to Layla and her daughter. However, Layla and her husband are no longer alive. Even if we cancel this betrothal, do you think that her life would be easy here? I am sure that May would try to gain every kind of benefit she can gain from Evelyn...and she is just a young girl...a girl. Cooper. Can you understand what can be the implications?"

Cooper was silent. He understood what his wife was trying to say but he still felt that they were doing wrong.

Even if they wanted to take Evelyn with them, they should first tell her and her family about their son’s condition.

Gianna could see the conflict on her husband’s face. She, however, was determined to take Evelyn with her today.

In Evelyn, she was seeing hope for her son’s hopeless future. As a mother, how could she let such an opportunity go away from her hands!

"We would be doing Evelyn a favor by taking her away with us. Have you looked at her body? I am sure that she doesn’t even get enough to eat here. We would provide her with food and clothes. Cooper, if Layla would have been here, she would have also understood me."

It was a lie. Even Gianna knew this inside her heart.

Layla would never do such a thing to her daughter...in fact, no parent would do such a thing.

However, Gianna was ready to lie if it was for her son.

Just like that, Gianna stood there with her husband and as time passed, she was finally able to convince him.

Evelyn’s uncle and the head of the tribe, Bentley returned in the evening. Since Gianna and Cooper had also reached the village only at noon they didn’t have to wait for too long.

After all, most of the time Gianna spent in convincing her husband that what they were doing was right.

By now, even Cooper was thinking that they were doing some sort of favor by taking Evelyn from such a home.

Indeed, May didn’t seem to be a good woman.

Bentley was of course surprised to see Gianna when his wife May introduced her to him. He remembered what she looked like when she had left the tribe.

However, the Gianna standing in front of him was far from that woman.

Seeing her husband staring at Gianna continuously, May’s eyes flashed and she pinched him on his waist.

Cooper did not like Bentley’s stare and hid his wife behind him.

Bentley came out of his trance and looked at his wife in dismay. Now May was very bold in front of others but in front of her husband, at least in outsiders’ presence, she could never behave boldly.

Hence, she smiled as gently as she could and said

"Dear, would you come to the room? I need to talk to you regarding something."

May said making Bentley confused. Nonetheless, he nodded his head and went to the room before May could go.

On the other hand, May looked at Evelyn who was standing in the corner of the room with contempt-filled eyes.

Evelyn was very afraid of her aunt and silently lowered her head.
